Gyeong-eun: 안녕하세요!
Hyunwoo: 안녕하세요. Hello everyone. Welcome to KoreanClass101.com’s Picture Video Vocab series, lesson #13. The Subway.
Gyeong-eun: 지하철.
Hyunwoo: Hi, my name is 현우 선 and I am joined by 경은.
Gyeong-eun: 안녕하세요, 최경은입니다.
Hyunwoo: 경은씨, What are we going to learn today? 오늘은 뭐 배울 거예요 (Oneureun mwo baeul geoyeyo)?
Gyeong-eun: Today, we are going to the subway station. 오늘은 지하철역에 갈 거예요 (Oneureun jihacheollyeoge gal geoyeyo).
Hyunwoo: Are we going to learn how to buy a ticket and take the subway?
Gyeong-eun: We are going to do that in a different culture class lesson--and today, we are going to have a good look around the Subway platform and inside the subway train.
Hyunwoo: Sounds like a good idea. Let’s go 빨리 가요(ppalli gayo).
Gyeong-eun: 현우씨. Do you think you can tell which subway station we are at right now?
Hyunwoo: I can’t really say for sure but I can see that we are on Line #1 and if we take the train that’s coming in right now, we can go to 인천(Incheon).
Gyeong-eun: Good observation.
Hyunwoo: Thanks. And then before we get on the train, shall we have a look at some vocabulary?
Gyeong-eun: 당연하죠(dangyeonhajyo). The first word to look at is Line #1.
Hyunwoo: 1호선(ilhoseon).
Gyeong-eun: 1호선(ilhoseon).
Hyunwoo: Line #2 is?
Gyeong-eun: 2호선(ihoseon).
Hyunwoo: Line #3
Gyeong-eun: 3호선(samhoseon).
Hyunwoo: Line #4
Gyeong-eun: 4호선(sahoseon).
Hyunwoo: Line #5, 6, 7, 8.
Gyeong-eun: 5호선(ohoseon), 6호선(yukoseon), 7호선(chilhoseon), 8호선(palhoseon).
Hyunwoo: Okay great job.
Gyeong-eun: Thank you.
Hyunwoo: Wait! What does it say here on the screen? Let’s have a look.
Gyeong-eun: The first line is saying 이번 열차 인천행(ibeon yeolcha incheonhaeng).
Hyunwoo: What does 이번 열차(ibeon yeolcha) mean?
Gyeong-eun: This train or more literally this timed train.
Hyunwoo: And 인천행(incheonhaeng) means?
Gyeong-eun: Bound for 인천(incheon) or going to 인천(incheon).
Hyunwoo: Good. And the next line is?
Gyeong-eun: 인천행 열차가 들어오고 있습니다(Incheonhaeng yeolchaga deureoogo itseumnida).
Hyunwoo: So once again 인천행(incheonhaeng) is bound for 인천(incheon). So this sentence means?
Gyeong-eun: The train bound for 인천(incheon is coming in.
Hyunwoo: Great. Now, before we go on, I would like to do a quick check to see if our listeners already know the names for some of the objects around here.
Gyeong-eun: Okay.
Hyunwoo: Can you help me? 도와주세요(Dowajuseyo).
Gyeong-eun: Sure, go ahead.
Hyunwoo: The floor.
Gyeong-eun: 바닥(badak).
Hyunwoo: The pole.
Gyeong-eun: 기둥(gidung).
Hyunwoo: The ceiling.
Gyeong-eun: 천장(cheonjang).
Hyunwoo: The light.
Gyeong-eun: 전등(jeondeung).
Hyunwoo: Great. I hope that gave our listeners a chance to review some words and let’s go. The train is coming in soon.
Gyeong-eun: Okay. Oh look, we have something interesting here.
Hyunwoo: Oh, let’s talk about this really quickly. What does it say?
Gyeong-eun: 갈아타는 곳(garataneun got).
Hyunwoo: And 갈아타다(garatada) means
Gyeong-eun: To transfer.
Hyunwoo: And 갈아타는 곳(garataneun got) means the place where you can transfer but we are not transferring. We are taking this subway right?
Gyeong-eun: Yeah. Let’s get in. Hurry up! 빨리오세요(Ppallioseyo).
Hyunwoo: Okay. We are in 경은씨, I will sit here. So do you want to sit over there?
Gyeong-eun: 네? 아니요. No. I am not supposed to sit there. 저기 앉으면 안 되잖아요(Jeogi anjeumyeon an doejanayo).
Hyunwoo: I was just kidding but for our listeners, can you tell us why you can’t sit there.
Gyeong-eun: Those seats in the corner are reserved only for senior citizens, pregnant women or people that have physical difficulties.
Hyunwoo: Right. So, when people get into a Korean Subway and see those seats empty, most people just leave them empty right so that people who really need those seats can sit there anytime.
Gyeong-eun: Yeah, right. And these seats are called 노약자석(noyakjaseok).
Hyunwoo: 노약자석(noyakjaseok).
Gyeong-eun: 노(no) means old, elderly.
Hyunwoo: 약(yak) means weak.
Gyeong-eun: 자 means person.
Hyunwoo: 석(seok) means seat. So, 노약자석(noyakjaseok).
Gyeong-eun: Yeah right. 노약자석. And there are some more of these seats on the opposite side too.
Hyunwoo: Yeah. 맞아요(majayo). Do you want to move to the next car? 옆 칸으로 갈까요(Yeop kaneuro galkkayo)?
Gyeong-eun: Why not?
Hyunwoo: But wait, before we go, 옆 칸(yeop kan) means
Gyeong-eun: Next car, next booth.
Hyunwoo: Great job. Okay let’s go. Oh, there’s a man selling some stuff.
Gyeong-eun: Yeah. What do you think he is selling? 뭐 파는 것 같아요(Mwo paneun geot gatayo)?
Hyunwoo: I think he is selling electric razors according to what it says but people don’t seem to be interested, right?
Gyeong-eun: Yeah, right. Isn’t it actually illegal to sell things in the subway?
Hyunwoo: Of course it’s illegal but there are some people who still do it.
Gyeong-eun: Do you often buy from them? 자주 사세요(Jaju saseyo)?
Hyunwoo: No, not really. They are cheap but never good in quality.
Gyeong-eun: You are right. I don’t recommend buying anything from them either.
Hyunwoo: So please remember that and I think we are running out of time 경은.
Gyeong-eun: Yeah. We’ve almost arrived at our destination.
Hyunwoo: But 근데..where are we going again? I forgot. 우리 어디 가는 거였죠(Uri eodi ganeun geoyeotjyo)? 잊어버렸어요(Ijeobeoryeosseoyo).
Gyeong-eun: Oh you said you’d buy me dinner. 저녁 사 주기로 했잖아요(Jeonyeok sa jugiro haetjanayo).
Hyunwoo: Oh I see. Actually, I’ll let you buy me dinner for a change.
Gyeong-eun: Well, I am very happy today. So I will treat you but just this once.
Hyunwoo: Okay. I know a good place. 저 좋은데 알아요(Jeo joeunde arayo). let’s go.
Gyeong-eun: Okay. So everyone, we will see you next time.
Hyunwoo: Okay everyone. After you finish watching this video, be sure to stop by KoreanClass101.com and pick up the lesson notes which will also have sample sentences for the vocab words we went over today.
