Kim: Usually, it's only possible by reserving a month in advance, but my friend's boyfriend is working at the Seoul University Hospital as a resident. If I ask my friend, I can get your mom in earlier.
Park: For real?
Kim: Yes. It's been a while since I've talked to her, so it's only possible if I can get a hold of her, but if I can, it shouldn't be a problem. I'm on good terms with her boyfriend as well.
Park: Then please do that. I really need any help I can get (I'm grasping at straws). I understand you have to talk to her first, but I can wait a few days.
Kim. Yes, I'll let you know as soon as I talk to her.

KoreanClass101.com 여러분!

An-dong Hahoe Folk Village

Everyone in KoreanClass101.com! This is Julia.

Today we will be going to Gyeongsangbuk-do. The entire village of An-dong Hahoe Folk Village was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2010. It is said that both English Queen Elizabeth the Second and American President Bush came to Andong Hahoe Folk Village.

As you can tell from the name "Hahoe," which is surrounded by the Nakdong River, traditionally built houses in the Joseon Dynasty style and thoughts of classical scholars remain more than in any other villages. This place has a long history as our country's representative scholarly village.

There is a place where you can see Hahoe Village in one glance. This place, across the river from Hahoe Village, is called Buyongdae. You will find it if you cross the Nakdong River riding a ferryboat and climb up the mountain a little. If you go there, you can see all at once the entire Hahoe Village surrounded by the Nakdong River. Furthermore, it is said that scholars' games and boat fireworks are performed regularly here for visiting tourists.

The Hahoe masks designated as national treasures are also very famous at the Andong Hahoe Village. They were derived from where the people who lived in this region put on masked plays, wearing these Hahoe masks and mimicking morality plays for a very long time. It is said that as these commoners put on Hahoe masks and danced mask dances, they expressed their suppressed feelings about society.

When I talk about Hahoe masks, I remember making Hahoe masks in an art class in my middle school. After making a shape of masks with paper clay, you can coat it with glue and apply several coats of Hanji or the traditional paper. Then, after you dry it, draw a face with coloring materials to complete it.

It is said there are experiential classrooms for making Hahoe masks in Ahndong.
I recommend that you participate in the class.

I have never been to Hahoe Village either. I definitely want to go if I get a chance.

Good-bye until next time.

Talk to Julia!
Do you know anything about Korean etiquette?

Park: I have been visiting several hospitals because my mother is quite unhealthy, but the Hyundai hospital that I went to yesterday also says that it might be impossible. We went there because my wife told me there are great doctors there who are competent in their work. Even those great doctors don't know how to treat her, they said.
Kim: Oh, that's not good. Have you also tried the Seoul University Hospital?
Park: No, not yet. Even if I go, I'm not sure it'll do the trick (if there'll be a sharp trick).

KoreanClass101.com 여러분!

Jeong-dong-jin Train Travel

Hello. All in KoreanClass101.com! It's Julia.

I introduced you to An-myeon-do in the Yellow Sea in Lesson 13. Today, I am going to introduce the East Sea of Korea.

I am going to introduce the closest train station to the sea, Jeong-dong-jin. Jeong-dong-jin is located in Gangneung, and it is a place with an outstretched beach as you go down from Jeong-dong-jin Station, and it is a place where people go to see the sunrise.

Although there are several methods of getting to Jeong-dong-jin, such as by car, bus, etc., among those, I would like to recommend that you go by train. As I said at first, Jeong-dong-jin is the closest train station to the sea, so going by train is very convenient. There are trains going to Jeong-dong-jin Station from Seoul Cheongnyangni Station every hour.

And because there is a night train that departs at eleven at night and arrives at about five, it is very convenient, especially for the people who are taking a sunrise trip. It is a perfect time for seeing the sun rise. If you arrive at five and wait, you can see the sunrise. However, you absolutely must check the weather forecast before going, in order to see the perfect sunrise. The sun rises every day, but it is not easy to see a perfect sunrise.

Do you know when the most people go to Jeong-dong-jin? It is on December thirty-first. Many people gather in Jeong-dong-jin to see the sunrise while greeting the New Year. And they ask for wishes as they greet the New Year.

There are many restaurants near the station. Although raw fish is especially famous near the ocean, for the mornings, I recommend the Kongnamul Gookbap or hot bean sprout rice and soup. How does it sound to eat a filling meal of hot bean sprout soup and rice and walk through the areas such as the Hourglass Park, Sculpture Park, and then enjoying the raw fish for dinner?

It might be Korean culture, but Korean people think that you absolutely must have something filling for breakfast. After having lunch, many people choose to go back to Seoul as a no-night, two-day trip.

And there are many beaches and tourist spots in the area, so I suggest you visit these places.

Then good-bye until next time.

Talk to Julia!
Do you like watching the sunrise too? Where do you go to see the sunrise?

(continued: drinking at a bar)
Lee: We've been failed by another company (We've got a big bottle of water), so what should we do? It might be impossible to come up with a new idea by next week. Who'll be doing the presentation?
Kim: Lee, would you like to take responsibility (take a gunstock?) I've done it a lot, so I know it'll be boring.
Lee: Eh? I know you've had a lot to drink. It is beyond my ability.
Kim: Try it once. Your ability will be recognized.
Lee: Instead of that, why don't you take responsibility (take a gunstock) and ask the director give more time?
Kim: Would that be better? Actually, it is not possible to get a new idea within a week.
Lee: That's what I'm talking about. Well...he is not like the director of the other team, who'd be rude enough to say "Are you out of mind? (Have you got a gunshot in your brain?)".
Kim: Let me think about it more. Actually, I've already talked with a CEO whom I know about the new idea. Let's see what he says after testing the product; after all, we don't have any solutions (don't have any bullets).

Kim: This place looks good (This bar's water is good). Nice drinks too. Thank you for introducing this place.
Lee: It's no problem. Well then, how is your stock going that you bought last month? I was told that many stock prices have fallen these days.
Kim: Luckily, some increased. Earning rates are about ten percent? But I'm thinking of selling them out.
Lee: Why? With earning rates that high? For poor guys like me, that's like a pie in the sky (like a rice cake on paintings). All my stocks have dropped.
Kim: I know, but some friends said they bought stocks related to the energy industry, and it seems like they are getting higher profits.
Lee: That sounds good, but always what others have seems better than yours (The grass always looks greener on the other side/others' rice cakes look bigger than yours). Don't you think you're being a little bit impatient?
Kim: Am I? Well, I know it won't be as easy as expected (not easy as eating rice cake on the bed).
Lee: It will be great if it goes well and I get a benefit (get bean flour for rice cakes) too, but I hope you'll think about it again.

KoreanClass101.com 여러분!

Filming Location of "Winter Sonata," Nam-i-seom

Hello. All in KoreanClass101.com! It's Julia.

These days, Korean dramas are said to be very popular. Among them, there is a drama that stoked the initial stages of the Korean Wave fever. "Winter Sonata" is a drama that depicts a first love. Some of you probably have seen this drama.

There is much beautiful imagery in the drama "Winter Sonata." Do you remember the place where Bae Yong-jun and Choi Ji-Uwalked on the snow side by side?

Today, I will introduce you to the famous Nam-i-seom, which is famous as the shooting location of Winter Sonata. Nam-i-seom is a small landlocked island between Gyeong-gi-do and Gangwon-do. Because the scenery is beautiful, these days, it is used often as a drama, movie, or advertising shooting location, and foreign tourists are increasing greatly. It is very famous to locals as a spot for dates.

In the past, it was reached by taking the Gyeongchun line, but now that a new line has been built, you can reach it by a subway. To get to Nam-i-seom, you can take a subway or train bound for Chuncheon and get off at Gapyeong Station. It takes about an hour from Seoul. You can see Nam-i-seom right away when you get off at Gapyeong Station, and you can get there by taking a boat bound for Nam-i-seom.

You will know if you visit, but there are various spots on Nam-i-seom where "Winter Sonata" was shot. It probably would be fun to stroll around and look here and there for the drama shooting locations. Why don't you walk on the Gingko tree roads or birch tree roads like the main characters of "Winter Sonata," or rent bicycles and look around all of Nam-i-seom?

Besides that, there are many famous tourist spots such as the Garden of Morning Calm and Chuncheon city, so I hope you go there.

Then good-bye until next time.

Talk to Julia!
Are there any places in your country that are famous as movie-shooting locations?

Lee: Manager, how's the new product work going?
Kim: Well...you know, I reported to the director yesterday, but he said another company already has developed the same product. We've been beaten by them again! (They made us drink water again!)
Lee: So what did he say?
Kim: Well...we're in an emergency (we have a fireball on the insteps of our feet), so he is saying that we should come up with a new idea by next week.
Lee: There's no finish line for this. Even though you're working for a living, every day is like a war. Would you like to go to a nice bar (bar with nice water) to release the stress?
Kim: Is there any nice bar? I knew there were some nice clubs.
Lee: How do you know those kind of places as a married man?
Kim: Don't ask that. Then shall we go to the nice bar to relax (to cool down a brain)? Where is it?
Lee: Ah, come this way, please.

KoreanClass101.com 여러분!

The West Sea and An-myeon-do

Hello, all in KoreanClass101.com! It's Julia.

When you feel depressed or confused, where do you want to go? If you ask this question to any Korean, half of them would say that "I want to go see the seaside."

Today, I am going to talk about the sea and Anmeyondo, which is the closest sea to Seoul.

One day, I was depressed, so I called my friend. I said, "Let's go see the beach."

Then, we departed from Seoul at twelve o'clock and arrived at Anmeyondo at three in the afternoon.

On the way, actually, we spent some hours at the Seohaean rest stop. You cannot miss rest stops on a trip.

Right after arriving in Anmeyondo, we went to the Anmeyondo forest lodge to take a rest for a little bit. I really felt my brains had been refreshed after smelling of pine scents as if I were taking a "forest bath."

When we got out of the forest with a refreshed mind and went to the seaside, the tides were about to start going out. The time for the ebbing tide on the west coast is different day by day. After the tide ebbed, a wide beach had been formed.

The very first time my friend and I saw the beach, we went around with bare feet. Right at the time, I discovered that people were finding something as they were digging tiny holes here and there. With curiosity, I came closer to a woman and asked, "What are you doing?" She replied, "I am gathering shells," and showed me shells from her sack. I also tried shell gathering as she was doing. It was an interesting experience.

While we were hanging out like this, suddenly, the red sunset covered the horizon beautifully. Evening came, and we were getting hungry.

When you talk about Anmyeondo, you cannot do so without mentioning roasted clams. We might talk about how wonderful it is to have roasted claims with cold sea winds. We made an end of our trip by having roasted clams.

If you get a chance, please visit there. If you want to see and experience the beach, please check the schedule when the tide goes out.

Then, I'll see you next time.

^O^ Talk to Julia
Do you have any special places that you want to go when you're depressed?

In An-myeon-do, when you say "roasted clams," they will know what you mean even if you do not specifically say roasted clams eaten in the cool ocean wind. We finished our day trip by eating roasted clams.

I hope you go if you get the chance. If you want to experience the mud paddies, make sure to check the time that the water recedes.
Good-bye until next time.
