KoreanClass101.com 여러분.

Hello, KoreanClass101.com listeners.
I'm going to change things up a bit and start off this post with a poem.
"When I wake up in the early morning, I think about what I have to do in the morning. After I eat breakfast, I think about what I have to do in the afternoon. When I'm about to go to sleep, I think about what I have to do tomorrow."
Do you know who spoke these words?
Last week, I spoke about Shin Saimdang.
Today, I'm going to talk about Shin Saimdang's third son, Yulgok Yi Yi.
I will mention Yulgok's three famous works, which include "Jagyeongmun," "Confucian Ideology," and "Thoughts and Ideologies on Societal Reform."
First, I'll talk about Yulgok's famous "Jagyeongmun."
"Jagyeongmun" has eleven main articles.
I have only referenced and quoted the simple and important parts of the text for the KoreanClass101.com listeners.
If my voice sounds weird, that's because I'll be quoting Yulgok's words directly.
First, the importance of dreams, "First, be as ambitious as possible."
Second, the importance of words, "A person of few words is someone who is stable."
Third, "The importance of studying and stabilizing oneself."
Fourth, the importance of reading, "The reason for reading is to learn about the good and the bad and apply it to life."
Fifth, the importance of consistency, "When you're trying to get something done and you want to be efficient, it's best to get things done as conveniently as possible."
Sixth, the importance of relaxation, "When there's a job to be done, do it as best as possible. However, don't think about how the work will affect you in a good or bad way."
Seventh, "Always do the best at what you do and give it your all."
Eighth, "If someone does an evil deed, repay them with kindness and influence them in a good way."
"When a family doesn't give precedence to each other, that means each member is responsible for their sincerity and actions."
Ninth, never become lazy, and education is...</itunes:summary>

----Korean----

KoreanClass101.com 여러분.

Hello, KoreanClass101.com listeners. How have you been?
Thanks to everyone, I had a fun and eventful week.
And to send my regards, I have been working hard to create lessons for all of the listeners.
Who do you think I'll be talking about today?
Before I mention the person's name, I'm going to talk a little bit about my mother.
Why am I all of a sudden going to talk about my mom?
That's because it has a little bit to do with who I'm going to talk about today.
I'm sure all of you feel the same way, but strangely enough, I have a lot to talk about with my mom.
Now that I'm an adult, I can make my own decisions, but I couldn't do that when I was a child.
My mom had certain principles and I had to... Actually, no, I wanted to follow them.
"Love" and "commitment" were words that I couldn't understand as a child, but my mom was able to personally explain them to me in ways I could understand.
So you can see a little bit of my mom in me today.
I always work hard (even now) to make her proud.
Just like how I had a mother like that, Korea has a mother like that as well.
Today's historical figure is Shin Saimdang.
There's a reason why Shin Saimdang is known as Korea's great historical figure.
And it was because she was able to represent Korea as a wise mother, a fine artist, a filial daughter, and a wife full of virtue and character.
In Korean, she's known as "a wise mother and good wife."
Let's think of all of her achievements.
First, Shin Saimdang was an artist who was cultured and educated.
From the age of seven, Saimdang was already able to draw landscapes and h...</itunes:summary>

안녕하세요, KoreanClass101.com 여러분.

The Spirit of General Yi Sunshin

Hello, KoreanClass101.com listeners,

Do you know who said this?

"Do not let my death be known!"

I've always looked up to leaders with strength.

I was like this since I was a child, but even as an adult, I'm always trying to understand the lives and thoughts of great leaders.

Many people, including myself, seek the leaders within us.

Anyone can respect leaders, but I don't think putting these words into action is something that everyone can accomplish.

A leader possesses a certain quality that no one else has, and leaders are people who have the strength to risk their lives for something.

Today, I’m going to talk about the mind and spirit of a great Korean historical figure named General Yi Sunshin.

First, like all famous historical figures, there was a reason for General Yi's leadership.

And that reason was clear and simple…for the love of his country and the love of his people!

He was never concerned with class ranks and was always focused on fulfilling his duties. After the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, he became the head of the naval forces and risked his life to protect the country at sea.

Despite all of the hardships he endured, such as his superiors becoming jealous of his accomplishments and being accused of crimes he didn't commit, General Yi still firmly believed in his country and the people.

Don't you think the modern-day politicians should also possess this spirit of loving the country and its people as well as a willingness to protect their country no matter what the cost?

Second, if loving his country and people were what drove General Yi, then his leadership skills were what did them justice.

As an officer, he strictly separated his public and private affairs and he also spoke directly (and without hesitation) to his superiors and m...</itunes:summary>

안녕하세요, KoreanClass101.com 여러분.

KoreanClass101.com 여러분, 진심으로 감사드립니다.

The Leadership of King Sejong the Great

Hello, KoreanClass101.com listeners.

I want to start lesson six off with stories about great Korean historical figures and their leadership.

By learning about Korea's history and historical figures, you'll get to understand the Korean language and culture a lot better.

First, there's a very important person who was a major influence on the modern Korean language. It's none other than the man who created the Korean alphabet, King Sejong the Great. Today, I'm going to go into detail about the Korean language and King Sejong's leadership skills.

The first question I would want to ask King Sejong is, "Why did he create Hangul, the Korean alphabet?"

The reason why King Sejong created Hangul was because of his "confidence in the Korean people."

To King Sejong, Korea needed military strength and plentiful food, and he believed that he had to earn the Korean people's trust and confidence in order for Korea to continue to exist safely.

However, if he inevitably had to prioritize these things, he would first do away with military strength and then the food, but above all, he would always fulfill his duty to earn their trust and confidence.

According to King Sejong, an essential element to a nation's happiness relied on the people's ability to communicate and unify as well as to build their confidence and trust.

He never waited for the people to come to him. Instead, he took the initiative and went to the people and worked hard at winning them over.

And from there, the Korean script was born.

As he made efforts to get closer to his people, he recognized that the Korean pe...</itunes:summary>

Good Habits vs. Bad Habits

We can all be a little stubborn. However, there are different levels of stubbornness. They can be divided into the good and the bad kinds. Today, I'll elaborate on these two different kinds of stubbornness.

First, let's differentiate between the two different kinds.

The good habits are always the same as your attitude on learning. Learning has a "acquiring new knowledge" connotation, but I think learning is actually what you get from acknowledging your mistakes and bad habits and then throwing them away and acquiring the new and good habits. The people with the consistently good habits tend to continuously experience success throughout their lives. On top of that, people with good habits can distinguish between the good and the bad and draw a clear line between what they'll compromise and their excuses.

On the other hand, bad habits are something completely different. People with bad habits are misinformed about their own thoughts and habits and react negatively toward the good. These types of people are the ones who say that the people with bad habits are good and are supportive and understanding of their bad habits. These types of people are terrible when it comes to distinguishing between people with the good and the bad habits.

This makes them more connected to the bad things and bad people. Unlike good habits, bad habits blur the lines between what they'll compromise and their excuses, especially when it has to do with themselves. On the other hand, they have a different take on it when it comes to other people. When they do it themselves, it's considered romantic, and when others do it, it's immoral.

The good and bad habits aren't alike at all. And what's more important is that these two can't exist at the same time or in the same situation. You'll end up choosing one way or the other. Whatever you choose will influence your way of thinking, speaking, and acting. And eventually, that becomes a habit and influences your fate and future.

‘Between problems and solutions’

Between Problems and Solutions!

I think today's topic is a most important topic for all of our KoreanClass101.com listeners.

The topic is "Between Problems and Solutions." It's a difficult topic to discuss, but I think this is something that everyone can sympathize with.

What do you think about the problems that you encounter in daily life? Everyone, including myself, always faces big and small problems throughout life.

So, is it impossible to go through life without having a single problem? Yes. I think that would be impossible. However, are there ways to minimize the number of problems you can face? This is definitely possible. Then how could this be possible? That's something that I'd like to share with you all today.

How do you feel when you hear the word "problem?"

People usually become flustered with they're faced with a problem. After they try to figure out how to cope with that problem, they'll act on it. And their actions could either make the problem get bigger or smaller, or it can even become an opportunity for some.

I want to go over the three types I just mentioned briefly.

First, there are people who can make the problems they're faced with worse. These kinds of people tend to avoid their problems. You can think of avoiding problems as literally running away from them, but I interpret this as people who act like there is no problem or pretend that they don't exist.

These people are the kind of people...</itunes:summary>

KoreanClass101.com 여러분.

"Culture Shock" and "Korean Instant Noodles!"

Hello, KoreanClass101.com listeners.

How are your Korean language studies going?

What do you all think about while you study Korean?

Are you only studying the language itself, or are you also thinking about Korean culture, the way Koreans think, and life in Korea while you study?

Today, I'll be telling you about my first encounter with culture shock in Canada.

I hope you'll understand if I start to tear up a little while I tell you this...

This happened to me during my second week in Canada. After my arrival, I didn't set foot out of my room.

I refused to eat the food that my study-abroad family cooked for me, and instead I opened a bag of instant noodles I brought from Korea. As I broke off the dry pieces of noodles and ate them, I began to wonder, "What's wrong with me? Am I going crazy?"

In Korea, I was optimistic, outgoing, and loved to socialize, so I just couldn't understand why I felt this way.

As the days passed, I came to realize what was making me feel this way.

For more than twenty years, I spent my whole life living in Korea and speaking Korean. After I moved to Canada, I couldn't adjust to speaking English and assimilate to the culture. I realized that this was my first culture shock.

What was really pitiful was that the culture shock was so extreme that it felt like a disease, so I tried to comfort myself by eating a staple instant noodle from Korea called "Shinramyeon."

This rare disease was not something that a hospital or a pharmacy could cure. This was an emotional disease, and I slowly realized that this was something I had to overcome on my own. However, this was easier said than done.

Then suddenly, it came to me. "If you can't avoid it, have fun with it!" After I came to that realization, I began to see everything in a new light. I overcame the obstacles I had with speaking English with Canadians and learned to have fun with i...</itunes:summary>

Hello, everyone. This is Se Hwa Yoon.

Today, I would love to talk about one of the bravest experiences I ever had, skydiving. Skydiving has been one of my dreams for a long time. I tried to do this in Korea, but it was difficult since I had to get a certificate.

Two years ago, I had a chance to go to Las Vegas. I was really happy. It was wonderful to visit Las Vegas, but I was more excited because I could skydive.

I finally found the place where you can sky dive.

First, they educated me. I should make my body like a banana, which will protect me from injury.

And I wore protective clothing. I should jump from the airplane with an assistant. His name was Nick. Nick attached a camera on his arm and filmed me all the time. He made a joke to relax me. I was very nervous when the plane started to fly.

The first person jumped from the plane. And it was my turn.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I couldn't open my eyes at first. But I didn't want to close my eyes all the falling time. Finally, I opened my eyes and saw the world. Everything looked very small. The wind blew into my face strongly. But I really enjoyed the moment—the moment I dreamed of for a long time. Everything was exactly the way I dreamed.

After ten to fifteen seconds, the assistant finally opened the parachute.

From then, everything was pretty relaxed and quiet.

I used to do paragliding when I was a university student. That was a very similar feeling except falling rapidly.

I was very proud of myself that I achieved one of my dreams again.
What about you?

What kind of special experiences did you try?

Would you like to share them with me?

Thank you for listening.

I look forward to meeting you next week again.

Have a wonderful week. Thank you!
