안녕하세요, 여러분. 오정은입니다.

저는 얼마 전에 학교에서 경복궁이라는 곳에 다녀왔습니다. 경복궁에 다녀온 이유는 봉사활동을 하기 위해서입니다. 경복궁은 우리나라 사적 제117호인 문화재입니다. 경복궁은 밖에서 볼 수는 있지만 들어가진 못하게 되어 있어서, 안은 그렇게 화려하지 않지만 고급스럽게되어 있습니다. 건물이 전체적으로 화려하기보다는 차분한 분위기입니다. 

경복궁 안에는 여러 개의 궁이 있는데, 굉장히 넓고 나무들이 많이 있어서 아주 예쁩니다. 학교에서 반 전체가 경복궁에서 쓰레기를 줍는 봉사활동을 하러 갔는데, 경복궁이 너무 커서 쓰레기를 줍는 것이 너무 힘들었습니다. 친구들도 선생님도 힘들어 하고 있을 때 점심 시간이 되어서, 친구들과 벤치에 앉아서 밥을 먹었습니다. 

김밥과 유부 초밥, 과일, 과자 등, 도시락으로 싸온 것을 함께 나누어 먹었습니다. 바람이 불어서 시원하고, 나무가 많아서 햇빛을 다 가려 주어서, 그대로 누워서 낮잠을 자고 싶었지만 봉사활동 중에 잠을 자면 선생님께 혼이 날 것 같아서 참았습니다. 

한참 봉사활동을 하다보니, 외국인 관광객이 정말 많았습니다. 특히 일본인 관광객이 가장 많은 것 같았습니다. 저는 일본어나 영어를 잘 못 하지만, 그냥 간단한 인사말을 건네니 모두 친절하게 인사를 해 주었고, 같이 사진도 찍어 주었습니다. 영어로 말을 자유롭게 하지 못해서 온몸을 움직여서 대화를 해야 했지만 그래도 좋은 경험이었고, 외국인들에게도 우리가 좋은 추억이 되었으면 좋겠습니다.

저희 학교에서는, 그리고 저희 학교 뿐만이 아니라 한국의 많은 고등학교에서는, ‘야자’라는 것을 합니다. ‘야자’는 ‘야간 자율 학습’을 줄인 말입니다. 수업이 모두 끝난 후에도 학교에 남아서 공부를 하는 것입니다. 밤에 하기 때문에 ‘야간’이고 선생님 없이 혼자서 공부를 하기 때문에 ‘자율 학습’이지요.

‘자율’이라는 말이 있는데도 불구하고, 많은 고등학교들에서는 이것이 ‘의무’인 경우가 많이 있습니다. 저희 학교에서도 예전에 그랬었는데, 이제는 의무로 하지 않아도 되게 되었습니다.

학교 안에는 큰 독서실이 있습니다. 고등학교 3학년은 야자를 독서실에서 하고, 1학년과 2학년 학생들은, 야자를 하는 학생들만 교실 하나에 모두 모여서 공부를 하는데, 선생님 한 분이 앞에서 감독을 하고 있습니다.

저는 평소에 야자를 하지 않지만, 그 날은 그냥 야자를 하고 싶어서, 선생님께 그 날 하루만 야자를 하겠다고 이야기를 하고 공부를 했습니다. 수업이 모두 끝나고 급식실에 가서 저녁 급식을 먹고, 밖에 나가서 음료수를 사와서 학교 독서실로 들어갔습니다.

독서실에는 책상이 있고, 앞에서 선생님이, 학생들이 떠들거나 잠을 자지 못 하게 감독을 합니다. 수업 시간과는 달리, 산만하지도 않고, 잠을 자는 학생들도 없고, 다들 굉장히 열심히 공부를 하고 있었습니다.

그 모습이 왠지 낯설었지만, 그래도 친구들이 열심히 하는 모습을 보고, 저도 친구들보다 열심히 해야겠다는 생각이 들어서 아주 열심히 공부를 했습니다. 공부를 하다 보니 종이 쳤습니다. 야자 1교시가 끝났다는 종이였어요.

종이 치고 학생들이 화장실에 가서 나가서 먹을 것을 사 먹고 있으면, 십분 뒤에 다시 야자 2교시의 시작을 알리는 종이 칩니다.

다시 공부를 하다가, 모르는 문제가 있을 때 친구를 잠깐 밖으로 불러서 물어보고, 다시 들어가서 공부를 하고 나서는 밥 10시가 돼서야 야자를 끝냈습니다.

학교에 이렇게 오래 남아서 공부를 하니 힘도 들이 들지만, 공부하는 분위기는 좋으 것 같습니다. 하지만 빨리 이런 고3 생활이 끝났으면 좋겠네요!
