Your wife has completely worn herself out by going non-stop since you arrived in Korea. One minute she’s learning how to cook new Korean dishes, next she is helping at your son’s Korean school, and then she is visiting your new Korean neighbors! You suggest she gets some rest today to which she reluctantly agrees. First, you knock on the bedroom door as you bring her breakfast in bed. She answers in Korean, “Come in!” However, when she sees that you forgot the bacon she screams in Korean, “Just get out!” Understanding her frustration and exhaustion, you back away knowing she doesn’t mean it. Later at lunch, you carefully double-check the menu as you once again knock on the door to bring her lunch in bed. She answers in Korean, “Come in!” However, when she see that her tea is cold she screams in Korean, “Get out!” Maybe you should just get out and let her sleep!

Everyone is staring at you as you sit in the boardroom of the Korean company you started working for less than a week ago. Silence fills the air and you could cut the tension with a knife! The boss was looking at you when he asked that last question in Korean…but you have no idea what he said…and now all eyes are on you awaiting a reply. Finally, your ever-so-patient Korean boss asks you in Korean if you understood the question. You are able to understand him this time. Your Korean is not very good, but you are picking up some phrases that people repeat to you often. You turn to the group, nervous and embarrassed, and explain in Korean that you are still learning to speak Korean. He asks in Korean, “why didn’t you say so?” Everyone starts laughing as the boss repeat what he has said in your language. Then he asks in Korean, “why didn’t you tell me? I have just the thing to help!” As he repeats what he has said to you again where you can understand him, he slides something across the table to you. As you read the paper, you look at him and repeat to him in the best Korean you can manage, “KoreanClass101.com huh? Why didn’t I think of that?” The boardroom erupts into laughter! You will do fine here with a little help from us!
