When you go to meet your Korean date at her parents’ home, you make sure you’re wearing your best jacket and tie, comb your hair, and splash on a little (but not too much!) cologne. When you arrive at her house, you knock on the door, expecting to get your Korean date and run out the door. But no, her father answers the door and greets you in Korean! He tells you in Korean, “Hello, you must be my daughter’s date. Please come in.” This is a bit more than you expected, but you comply and return the greeting in Korean. He invites you into the living room to wait for his daughter, and he begins to ask you many questions in Korean. You respond to his questions about your job, education, and plans for the evening in Korean for what seems like an eternity until your date appears. When she arrives, her father says to you in Korean, “It was a pleasure talking with you. How did you learn to speak Korean so well?”
