Romanization on intermediate lessons????

Postby drummerboy » October 13th, 2011 3:09 am

why? by lower intermediate and regular intermediate I'd guess that people know how to read - all the romanization does is clutter the page and is very distracting- would be great to see that done away with-

other than that, great site :)

Same question - same answer

I agree with you about romanization not only being unnecessary, but also a hindrance to learning Korean. Unfortunately there is likely a higher volume of feedback from lazy pop culture students of Korean who think they can learn better with such crutches.

I completely agree with you!! The romanization on anything past very basic beginner lessons drives me insane. If I print out the lesson notes, it causes a waste of both paper and ink. As well, it is such a distraction when studying. Seriously...it takes like a couple of days to learn hangul....why in the world would they still be including romanization on even intermediate and advanced lessons?!?!?!

From Advanced Season 1, Lesson 12:
Hangul Romanization English
국내 여행 guknae yeohaeng domestic travel
자가용 jagayong car, one's own car
왕복 wangbok round-trip
편도 pyeondo one-way
여가생활 yeogasaeng-hwal pastime, leisure
퇴직 toejik retirement, resignation
은퇴 euntoe retirement, resignation...

국내 여행 하는 사람들이 늘어나고 있어요.
guknae yeohaeng haneun saramdeur-ineureonago isseoyo

여가생활을 즐길 시간이 요즘에 거의 없었
어요.
yeogasaeng-hwal-eul jeulgil sigan-i yojeum-e geoui eopseosseoyo.

I apologize for my vent, but I very strongly disagree with this stance that KClass101 apparently takes. As trutherous stated, it is such a crutch and hindrance to anyone learning Korean; and it is a major distraction for people serious about learning.

Hi Everyone,

We appreciate your comments and concerns.
We want to please all our students, the ones that want already read Hangul, and the ones that don't, so that's why we have the Romanization even for more advanced levels.

We appreciate your understanding :D
Sincerely,
Paloma

I am disappointed, but not surprised.
