What kind of exercises do you do to stay healthy? In fact, I didn't like to exercise at all before I came to America. I was always one of the worst students in P.E. class. When I took a tennis lesson, I remembered I didn't enjoy it at all. Do you remember that I told you I am an identical twin? My twin sister doesn't like to exercise, either. I am not sure it is a genetic reason. However, my oldest sister, Jung Hwa, loves doing sports and exercise. Actually, she was one of the best players in the class. Isn't it interesting? After I graduated from the middle school, my mother sent me and my twin sister, Min Hwa, to kung fu school. However, I still didn't enjoy it at all. Interestingly, these days, I love doing exercise. I started to go to the gym every day after I arrived in Boston about two years ago. After a while, I found myself healthy not just in body, but also in mind. Whenever I had a lot of academic stress, I ran to the gym. The feelings after working out are incredible. My body is full of positive energy. It refreshes me and exhilarates me! I love those feelings. These days, I don't go to the gym anymore. Instead of the gym, I start running in the park every morning. I run about three to four miles a day with my lovely twelve-year-old dog, Seul Gi. After running, I do yoga for about ten minutes at home. And then I meditate. I inhale with a deep breath, and exhale with a long breath. After five minutes, I can feel all my stress is gone with a long, deep exhale. Nowadays, I believe working out is the best way to stay healthy. What about you? What kind of exercises do you do? How do you manage your stress? Would you tell me about that? Thank you so much. Take care! I am looking forward to meeting you next week again. Thank you! --------------------------- Learn Korean with KoreanClass101! I think Manhattan is one of easiest cities to find a way through. Everything is very clear and well organized. Even people like me, who lose their way often, can find their way easily. Buses in Manhattan have clear routes that make them convenient to use. Most buses drive either horizontally or vertically across the city, making it very easy to find the right one when you want to use them. The first time I lived in Manhattan, I asked many people for directions. "Where is Broadway?" "Which way is Fifty-first Street?" To be honest, I still get confused whether I should turn right or left to find Forty-first Street after I get off at the Forty-second Street Times Square station. I usually walk to one block to find out whether it is Forty-first Street. Compared to Korea, it's much more difficult to find your way through Korean streets because they are not straight. They are not divided by blocks, either. That’s the reason the portable machines, such as navigation devices and cell phones that show you where you are and where to go, are well developed. Today, I went to New Jersey for the first time. I got on a NJ Transit bus, and I enjoyed the Manhattan scenery from across the Hudson River. I probably asked people ten times for directions. In the middle of walking, when I asked them, they were so friendly and showed me where to go. When I was on the bus, I asked the bus driver more than five times. "Am I there yet?" He never lost his smile and told me where to get off. He was so friendly too. I really enjoyed my day. Well, have you ever lost your way? What did you do? Do you have any advice for someone like me who loses the way often? Thank you so much, and take care! I will be back next week. You are enjoying what was a quiet picnic lunch in a quiet Korean park, when suddenly, your children come barreling towards you screaming! It seems like it takes ten minutes to calm them and their friends down enough so that you can concentrate on one voice at a time! Your son yells in Korean, “Mom, mom!!! We were at the pond and we saw something moving in the water!!” His friend, equally excited, continues in Korean, “Come see, come see!! Pleeeease! What IS it?” Laughing, both out of relief and because they are adorable, you agree to go explore the depths of the pond with them. As you reach the edge of the water, both boys are tugging at you and screaming in Korean, “See it? There it is!! What is that???” You move a little closer to get a better look, almost stumbling into the water (which you are SURE they would have enjoyed tremendously), when you realize what it is they are talking about. You point to the little swimmer in the water and tell the boys in Korean, “That is a frog…and that one there, that is a newt.” The boys stare into the water with a newfound fascination; you can almost hear the wheels spinning in their heads, when they turn and look at you and both reply in Korean, “Can we keep him, can we keep him? It seems like it takes ten minutes to calm them and their friends down enough so that you can concentrate on one voice at a time! Your son yells in Korean, "Mom, mom!!! We were at the pond and we saw something moving in the water!!" His friend, equally excited, continues in Korean, "Come see, come see!! Pleeeease! What IS it?" Laughing, both out of relief and because they are adorable, you agree to go explore the depths of the pond with them. You excitedly rush to meet her apologizing as you throw your arms around her! You apologetically explain in Korean, “I am so sorry! I should have taken the subway!” Just thrilled to finally see something besides your face buried in Korean books and files, she replies in Korean, “It’s okay. Perhaps, I should have met you at your office!” You both agree it doesn’t matter now. All that matters now is spending some time together this weekend! Arriving at the movie theater in Seoul though, she asks if you remembered the tickets. Realizing things cannot get any worse, you apologize once more in Korean, “I should have bought tickets, but I forgot!” This is not going well. Maybe you can just take her to a lovely Korean dinner to make up for your forgetfulness. You offer to take her anywhere she wants to go in Korea for dinner - sky’s the limit! She regretfully replies, “I shouldn’t have eaten tonight before we met.” Something tells you that you are both going to have a lot of regrets about tonight…

The New Year is coming. How do you usually spend New Year's Day? Did you think about New Year's resolutions? I always enjoy New Year's Day. I feel like I can start all over again. This is the second year that I will spend New Year's Day in the USA. In Korea, Koreans have two New Year's Days. Do you know that? We call them Seol Nal. One is Goo Jeong ("the lunar calendar"), and the other is Shin Jeong ("the solar calendar"). Nowadays, more and more people enjoy New Year's Day; however, most people in Korea believe the Lunar New Year's Day is the real holiday. That's the reason Goo Jeong has more celebrations than Shin Jeong. On Goo Jeong, like Chu Seok, a lot of people visit their hometowns to meet with their families. When I was young, I remembered that my older brother and I always visited my father's house in Bu San. We had a special ceremony for ancestors and spent a great time with our family. In fact, when I heard the expression "Chinese New Year" in America, I wondered why people don't call it the "Korean New Year." On December thirty-first, I will probably spend time in Times Square in New York like last year. I had a wonderful experience in Times Square last year. It was frigid weather, but thousands of people stayed outside to greet the New Year. Huge signboards showed a clock every hour, and it cheered people up. There were various outdoor performances; it was not boring to wait for a long time. Finally, we heard "Five, four, three, two, one, Happy New Year!" A lot of people hugged and kissed; they enjoyed their moments. I believed I would remember this scene forever. I was really happy that I could greet New Year's Day in Times Square since that was one of my dreams. What year of New Year's Day do you remember? Was there a special event? Would you tell me more about that? Well, today, this is it. Thank you so much. Happy New Year, everyone! --------------------------- Learn Korean with KoreanClass101! I think it looks like a flower.” You get ready to ask your friend in Korean why this is a good use of his time, but you bite your tongue. How do you spend Christmas? Do you spend time with your family? Do you exchange presents under the Christmas tree? Christmas is one of the biggest holidays in Korea too. However, the way Koreans spend time at the holidays is a bit different from other countries. A lot of young people spend most of Christmastime with their friends instead of spending time with their family. A lot of people get out of their house and have a great time with their friends. When I was in Korea, I also spent time with my friends, doing things such as eating delicious food and having great conversations with friends. There are several famous spots in Seoul, such as Kang Nam, Shin Chon, Jam Sil, and Ap Goo Jeong. Have you ever been there? If you have a chance to spend Christmas in Korea, would you like to visit these hot spots? The restaurants, stores, and even streets are full with people. I remember I had to visit ten restaurants to find seats for my friends and me. Can you believe that? All the restaurants were full of people; there were actually waiting lists to get in the restaurants. It is a bit different scene with different countries, where people exchange their presents under the Christmas trees. What do you think? About the presents, I believe it is not that common to exchange gifts in Korea. In fact, you don't buy all the presents for your family or friends. Spending quality time is more important in Korea than buying your family presents. Well, I believed in Santa Claus until I was fifth grade in elementary school. When I woke up on Christmas morning, I found beautiful presents. Christmas was my favorite holiday! How did you spend your Christmas? What was your favorite present? Would you tell me your country's Christmas culture? Is it a big holiday? Do you spend time with your family or friends? Thank you so much for listening and I will see you next week. --------------------------- Learn Korean with KoreanClass101! But they’re supposed to be portraits of us!” “Oh dear,” you think to yourself in Korean as you look at the blob in the picture…

Ah, you have the itch to travel for a vacation away from Korea. You plead with your significant other and explain that while you love Korea, you need to get away to someplace new, at least for a few days. You suggest in Korean, “Let’s take a vacation to an island where it’s warm and sunny.” Your significant other responds in Korean, “But we already have some travel plans to look forward to - we’re visiting my parents in a month.” Is that his idea of a vacation - going to another place in Korea to stay with his parents? Your skin starts to crawl, and you assert in Korean, “Well, that sounds like too much stress for it to truly be a vacation. Since I won’t be able to relax at all while we’re there, we’ll have to go away for a while to a fancy island resort to make up for it.” With that, you stomp off, but you hear a loud sigh from the other room. For good measure, you add in Korean, “I want my fruity umbrella drinks!” You’re sure you’ll get your way…or else!

----English---- Hello, everyone, this is Se Hwa Yoon. How have you been for a week? Well, everyone, have you ever heard "MT?" I thought that was an English expression at first. MT means Membership Training. Do you understand now? Not yet? Let me explain to you. MT is very popular in Korea. When you first start attending college or working at a new company, you don't know a lot of people. In this situation, Koreans go to MT. For one day, one night, and two days, or sometimes two nights and three days, they spend time together to get to know each other. They go to the beach or mountains. MT training doesn't mean real training. It is more like spending a great time together. When you go to MT, you actually bring all the ingredients of food and cook there. All the people take their roles; some people cook, and some people wash dishes. In some ways, it sounds like camping, but Koreans sleep in a room instead of a tent, which is a bit different. At night, people make a campfire, they sing, and tell fun or scary stories or play a game. When you are a freshman, you don't know anyone; this could be a great chance to get to know classmates. In Korean companies, ability is very important but social relationships are also important. That's the reason a lot of companies hold MT quite often. Doesn't it sound like fun? Would you like to come to Korea and go to MT together? In fact, my first MT was when I was a freshman; I was really excited because that was the first time I slept outside of my house. My father was very conservative; he had never let me sleep outside of his house. I went to MT, and I made many friends and listened to great advice about studying; that was a wonderful time. If you are already in Korea, why don't you suggest to people "Let's go to MT." People will be amazed by how fluent your Korean is. In your country, do you have something like MT? If you do, would you tell me, please? Thank you for listening. Have a wonderful week. I will meet you next week. Thank you. --------------------------- Learn Korean with KoreanClass101! Today, I would like to talk about "On Dol Bang." Have you ever heard about "On Dol Bang?" A long time ago, Koreans put stones under the floor of a room. When they made a fire in the fireplace of kitchen, that fire heated up the stones. In that way, Koreans had a warm floor. 온 means "warm," and 돌 means "a stone," and 방 means "a room," which makes "a warm stone room." These days, Koreans lay water pipe instead of stones, which warms the floor easily and faster. Doesn't it sound great? A room with a warm floor? In the wintertime, Koreans heat up not just the air in the room but also the floor, which is very efficient. Koreans call this kind of floor "On Dol Bang." In fact, it has been only thirty to forty years since Koreans have started to use beds. Before then, most people spread a blanket on the floor and they slept on the blanket. Some older people in Korea still prefer "On Dol Bang" instead of the bed. If you have a chance to visit a Korean-style hotel, they would ask you, "Do you want a room with the bed or "On Dol Bang?" At that time, would you like to try "On Dol Bang?" A long time ago, mothers put cooked rice under the blanket on the warm floor. Can you believe it? At that time, Koreans didn't have a thermos bottle or rice cooker, so the cooked rice became cold after a while. Mothers wanted to serve warm rice for their children or husband, so they put the cooked rice under the blanket on the warm floor. The cooked rice was in a steel bowl, which can be heated up easily by the floor. That floor kept the rice warm. Isn't it interesting? The first time when I came to the USA, I missed On Dol Bang a lot. In the wintertime, whenever I feel a cold floor in America, I really miss lying down on the warm On Dol Bang. I guess that's one of the reasons why Koreans take their shoes off before they get in the room. It is a very different layout in structures between Korean houses and those in different countries. Would you tell me how you spend the wintertime? What kind of warming system did you have? Would you tell me about that? Thank you so much, and have another wonderful week. --------------------------- Learn Korean with KoreanClass101! If you had a chance to visit to Korea, how did you feel about the people? Koreans love doing things rapidly. When they order meals in restaurants, they always say, "Can you bring it as soon as possible, please? I am in a hurry." When they surf the Internet, a lot of people close the website if it doesn't open in three seconds. That's the reason South Korea has the fastest Internet network in the world. If you have a chance to visit Korea, you will be surprised by the speed of the Internet. Well, everyone, have you ever heard of a "one-minute steak?" Korean people invented the one-minute steak, which is cooked on a special stone plate while a waiter brings it to customers. Can you believe it? In that restaurant, if you don't get food in three minutes after ordering, everything will be on the house. What do you think? Don't you want to go there? Also, have you ever heard of "Quick Service?" In Korea, there is a quick service that delivers everything very fast. Such as, if you have to send a document to a different company, the "Quick Service" guy will deliver it in a couple of hours by motorcycle. Another example of Koreans' fast behavior is when they order some food on the phone. In Korea, you can order most foods by calling them; when they order, they always say "Can you bring it quickly, please?" Your lovers can get flowers in two hours if you order them in Korea. This would be wonderful if you have to send flowers to somebody urgently, right? When you see one company's advertisement, you can clearly see how much Koreans love the words "fast," "quickly," and "rapidly." That Internet network company's advertisement is "High speed Internet speedier than light." Isn't this incredible? Even high speed is not enough, so they describe it as speedier than actual light. A lot of my foreign friends were surprised by the speed of building buildings in Korea. According to their motto, "After sleeping one night, you can see the new building the next morning." I am also a person who got used to this fast culture; it was difficult when I came to the USA for the first time because of the different speed of people. When I get on the bus or talk to someone in the hospital, everyone seems very relaxed and enjoys their moments. To me, it looked very different from Koreans.
