Learn Korean with KoreanClass101.com! Action and reaction…isn’t that one of the laws of physics we learned in grade school? Well, in life in Korea, you’ve learned that every action you take provokes a reaction, whether good or bad, from your girlfriend. So if you’re late to pick her up when you plan a date in Korea, you better have a good reason and call ahead. And when you forget to do something, you have to make it up to her by buying her a Korean trinket so you won’t be in the doghouse. So this time, when you are finally getting some time off in Korea to spend with her, you want to make sure everything is right. You decide to plan everything advance and you set up reservations at her favorite Korean restaurant, buy tickets to the Korean show she’s been wanting to see, and you even arrange transportation. You try to think of every last detail to please her so you won’t run into any pouting on your date (or hearing complaints in Korean about it later). As you run through your plans in your mind, suddenly you slap yourself on the forehead and say to yourself in Korean, “I better bring her flowers to prevent her from complaining that she never gets them later.”

Learn Korean with KoreanClass101.com! You’ve arrived in Korea, and everything is just as you expected it, except for one thing. The person you came to visit, your husband, is behaving oddly. Maybe it’s because he’s in his military frame of mind, but he keeps answering you with varying degrees of formality, including saying “yes, ma’am” in Korean in response to your questions. You ask him in Korean, “What’s up?” but he just responds in Korean with, “Nothing’s wrong, ma’am.” While you wish he’d be this polite at home when you ask him to do chores around the house, it’s odd that he’s being so formal while you’re just having an ordinary Korean conversation now. So to turn the tables, you start thinking of your honey-do list and the things you want to buy and mention them in Korean. You tell him in Korean, “You’re being so agreeable today that I think I’ll buy that purse I’ve been wanting for a while.” He doesn’t offer any response, so you continue in Korean, “And how about if we spend a little money and fix up the back yard that our dog tore up last year with some new plants and a new shed for your tools?” We’ll see how long he keeps saying “yes, ma’am” in Korean now!

Learn Korean with KoreanClass101.com! You lazily stretch, roll over in the very comfortable Korean hotel-room bed, and think of the wonderful night’s sleep you just had. Suddenly, it occurs to you…what time is it?! You look at the clock in a panic…oh my! You are late! You scramble to your feet, clutch everything within reach, and shove a toothbrush halfway down your throat as you pull on your clothing! As you climb into the cab downstairs, you frantically tell the taxi-driver in Korean, “It’s always like this for me in Korea! How fast can you drive?” Startled, the driver explains in Korean, “There’s always a way if you try hard enough!” Questioning his positivity at a time like this, you ask him in Korean, “If there’s always a way, then why am I always late to important events?” Laughing, he replies in Korean, “Because you will always be late when you set yourself up in a negative way.” You’ll have to ponder that later when you’re not feeling so negative!

Attempting to be the pleasant person you usually are, you oblige. Under her breath, you hear her mutter in Korean, “If only I had gone to bed earlier….” Making small talk as any decent cabbie will, you ask if she had a late night. She suddenly spews forth an endless list of complaints in Korean, “We had a company dinner! It would have been nice if it had ended earlier…, I should have drunk less! It would have been nice if I didn’t try so hard to make people like me…, it would have been nice if yesterday had been Friday in fact…I could stay in bed all weekend and try to forget about my terrible life!” Not being able to hold your tongue, you snap back in Korean, “I should have the ‘problems’ you have…company dinners and such! I should have practiced more…it would have been nice to see the Seoul Olympics! But I’m not whining about it!”

Just give me a chance!” They both reply in Korean, “It would be different if only you hadn’t messed up so badly already!”
