Jaehwi: Hi everyone. I am Jaehwi. Welcome back to Korean Weekly Words. Let’s see what we have for this week. This week’s theme is direction words. Okay let’s see what we have.
The first one is 동쪽 (dongjjok) which means “east” or “east side.” So 동 (dong) means “east” and 쪽 (jjok) means “side.” So you can say 일본은 한국의 동쪽에 있습니다. (Ilboneun hangugui dongjjoge itsseumnida.) which means “Japan is located on the east side of South Korea.”
Okay next we have 남쪽 (namjjok). 남 (nam) means “south.” 강남은 한강의 남쪽에 있어서 강남이라고 부릅니다. (Gangnameun hangangui namjjoge isseoseo gangnamirago bureumnida.) “Gangnam is located on the south of Han River. So that’s why people call it Gangnam.” It literally means south of river.
Okay next we have 오른쪽 (oreunjjok) meaning “right.” Okay with that word, you can say 저는 오른손 잡이여서 마우스를 오른쪽에 놓습니다. (Jeoneun oreunson jabiyeoseo mauseureul oreunjjoge nosseumnida.) which means “I am a right handed person, so I put my mouth on the right side.” Right.
Okay next we have 안 (an) which means “inside” or “in.” Usually it goes with the particle 에 (e). So like it goes like 안에 (ane) to say “inside.” If you watched some of the popular Korean dramas, I think you know this phrase which is like 내 안에 너 있다. (Nae ane neo itda.) which means “You are inside me, my heart.” I would just use that. You are inside my heart. So like people still use that when they confess their love.
Okay next we have 밖 (bak) which means “outside.” You can usually use this word with the particle 에 (e). So it goes like 밖에 (bakke). With that word, you can say 날씨가 추워서 밖에 나가기 싫다. (Nalssiga chuwoseo bakke nagagi silta.) which means “I don’t want to go outside because it’s cold.”
Okay that’s all for this week. I will see you next time. 다음 시간에 뵐게요. (Daeum sigane boelgeyo.) 안녕히 계세요. (Annyeonghi gyeseyo.)
