INTRODUCTION
Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다.
Hyunwoo: 안녕하세요. 선현우입니다.
Keith: Hey Keith here. Eat Something Good.
Seol: 나도 나도.
Keith: 어떤 거요?
Seol: 맛있는 거요.
Keith: 맛있는 거?
Seol: 네.
Keith: Okay. It’s on you.
Seol: 정말?
Keith: Yeah you get to buy me some food.
Seol: Sure, sure I have to I think.
Keith: Yeah you got to eat something good. 맛있는 거 먹어야죠.
Seol: 그럼 이리고 와 봐요. 그냥은 안 되고 한국어 가르쳐 주세요.
Keith: 어디로 와요? Where do you want me to go?
Seol: 마이크 앞으로.
Keith: So why are we talking about something good, something delicious 맛있는 거.
Hyunwoo: 왜냐면 데이트할 때는 그냥 아무거나 먹기에는 좀 그렇죠. 그래서 맛있는 거 먹어야 되겠죠.
Seol: 그럼요 당연하죠. 데이트할 때는 맛있는 거. 보통 친구들하고 먹을 때는 그냥그냥 평범한 거.
Hyunwoo: 라면, 김밥?
Seol: Keith한테는 김밥 맛있는 거예요.
Keith: Yeah that’s a specialty. That’s not 평번한 거. That’s not normal.
Hyunwoo: 저는 김밥을 너무 많이 먹어서 이제 평범해요 김밥이. 설씨는 어때요?
Seol: 저는 김밥 되게 좋아해요. 사실 저한테도 김밥은 맛있는 거예요.
Keith: So we are all going out on the triple date to a kimbap place.
Seol: 현우씨 빼고.
Keith: 현우씨 빼고.
Hyunwoo: I am not going.
Seol: 우리도 안 불러요.
Keith: It is okay, 걱정 마세요.
Hyunwoo: 그런데 여기서 사장님이 맛있는 걸 사 먹으라고 할 때에는 김밥 얘기는 아닐 거예요 아마.
Keith: Yeah when the boss 사장님 is telling 소연 and 인성 to go out and get something good to eat, he’s probably not going to be saying kimbap. What do you think he is going to say?
Seol: 짜장면
Keith: Yeah right. 짜장며 is like the lowest of the low.
Hyunwoo: In price.
Seol: 그러면 스테이크?
Hyunwoo: 네, 스테이크나 파스타.
Seol: Pasta, spaghetti
Hyunwoo: 이런 것들이 한국에서는 비싼 음식, 맛있는 음식이라고 말을 하죠.
Keith: All right. So in today’s conversation, they are not actually going out to eat yet but 사장님 is going to give them a little bonus, give them a little nudge on the shoulders, hey take her out, get something good to eat and he is going to include a bonus. So watch out for that word. What’s that word?
Hyunwoo: 보너스
Keith: Not so hard is it?
Hyunwoo: 그러면 대화를 들어 보실까요?
DIALOGUE
Hyunwoo: 이번에는 천천히 한 번 더
(1)사장님: 인성아, 소연아, 잠깐 이리 와 볼래?
Keith: Inseong, Soyeon, would you come over here for a second?
(2)인성+소연: 네~ 사장님.
Keith: Yes, sir.
(3)사장님: (기침을 하면서) 오늘 내가 좀 몸이 안 좋아서, (기침) 병원에 좀 갔다 올게.
Keith: (coughing) I'm not feeling very well today, (coughing) so I'll go and see the doctor.
(4)인성: 사장님, 서점은 걱정 마시고, 병원 가셨다가 집에 가서 쉬세요.
Keith: Don't worry about the bookstore, and after seeing the doctor, please go home and rest.
(5)소연: 네, 사장님. 오늘은 저희 두 명 다 있으니까 괜찮아요.
Keith: That's right. Both of us will be here today so it's alright.
(6)사장님: (기침) 아, 그렇게 해 줄래? 아, 그리고 여기 월급이야.
Keith: (coughing) Oh, would you? Oh, and here's your pay.
(7)인성: 아, 감사합니다.
Keith: Thank you.
(8)사장님: 그리고 소연이도.
Keith: And for you too, Soyeon.
(9)소연: 감사합니다. 빨리 나으세요 사장님.
Keith: Thank you. Please get well soon.
(10)사장님: 너희 둘, 일을 너무 열심히 해서, 이번 달에는 보너스도 좀 넣었으니까, 데이트 할 때 맛있는 거 사 먹어. 알았지?
Keith: You two work so hard, so I put in a little bonus for this month too, so eat something good when you go on a date, alright?
(11)인성: 헤헤. 네 감사합니다!
Keith: Hehe. Thank you!
(12)소연: 네, 감사합니다. 조심히 들어가세요.
Keith: Thank you. Please take care.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Keith: All right so 인성 got the bonus. He is going to take her out to eat or they both got a bonus hah!
Seol: 네, 둘 다 받은 거 같아요.
Hyunwoo: 그러면 더치 페이 해야겠네요.
Seol: 인성이 내야죠.
Hyunwoo: 그래도 남자가 사야 되는 거예요?
Keith: Wait! Wait! So let’s go over that word.
Hyunwoo: 더치 페이
Keith: Dutch pay which means when you go out, everyone pays for themselves.
Hyunwoo: 네, 한국에서는 각자 돈을 낼 때 더치 페이라고 정말 많이 하죠.
Seol: 네, 그렇지만 아직도 더치 페이보다는 함께 돈을 내거나 아니면 한 사람이 쏘는 경우가 더 많은 것 같아요.
Keith: Yeah usually one person buys the food. The oldest person here. So Hyunwoo, dinner is on you.
Seol: 쏘세요.
Keith: Nudge, nudge
Hyunwoo: 보너스가 필요해요. 그런데 재미있는 것은 제가 방금 보너스라고 했죠.
Seol: 네
Hyunwoo: 한국에서는 보너스라고 쓰는데 말할 때에는 다 뽀너스라고 해요.
Keith: So can we go over the different pronunciations just in case the listeners didn’t catch it.
Seol: 보너스
Keith: That’s the normal one.
Seol: And 뽀너스
Keith: The exaggerated one.
Hyunwoo: 네, 그리고 Sometimes, some people say 뽀나스. 한국 텔레비전을 많이 보시면 이 단어를 많이 들을 수 있을 거예요.
Keitho: Well let’s get into that word not by watching television but we got it in our vocabulary section.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: Okay so let’s take a look at one of these words
Hyunwoo: 그러면 열심히라는 단어를 볼까요?
Keith: Hard, diligently. Now this isn’t such a difficult word 열심히 공부하다 to study diligently 열심히 일하다 work hard.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: But why are we taking a look at this word today?
Seol: 열심히에는 열과 심이라는 한자로 이루어진 단어가 있어서 우리는 또 한자 공부를 하면 여러 개의 단어를 알 수 있잖아요.
Keith: Okay so yeah let’s break this apart 열 and 심. What’s the first one?
Seol: 열
Keith: And what’s the hanja behind this?
Seol: Well 열 means hot.
Hyunwoo: Or heat.
Seol: Yes.
Keith: And what about that second part of the word?
Seol: 심 basically means heart or mind.
Keith: Like 마음.
Seol: 예, 마음.
Keith: So we have hot heart hot mind.
Seol: 뜨거운 마음
Keith: Oh like a fervor to study, diligence in studying or diligence in doing whatever.
Hyunwoo: Yeah hard working heart.
Seol: 어 그러네요. 열심히 공부하다, 뜨거운 마음으로 공부하다.
Hyunwoo: 네. Your heart is burning with desire to do something.
Seol: Uh-huh.
Keith: I don’t know if it’s so vivid as that but okay let’s go into that hanja in a little more detail. The first one we have is
Hyunwoo: 네, 열인데 열이라는 단어가 들어간 단어가 많이 있어요. 예를 들어서
Seol: 열정
Keith: Passion
Hyunwoo: 그리고
Seol: 열기
Keith: Heat.
Seol: 열렬하다
Hyunwoo: Wow! 열이 두 개 있어요.
Keith: Fervent.
Hyunwoo: 그리고 이렇게 한자어로 되어 있는 단어도 있지만 you can use the word 열 alone too.
Seol: 열나다
Hyunwoo: 열이 나다 or 열이 있다 to have a fever.
Keith: Because your head is burning.
Hyunwoo: Yeah you have fever somewhere, head, throat 아픈 곳에서 열이 나겠죠.
Keith: Like Saturday night fever, boogie nights.
Seol: 그럴 땐 어디서 열나요? 몸에서 열나요?
Keith: Yeah your whole body. Okay so what do we have?
Hyunwoo: 그 다음은 심이에요 심.
Keith: Heart, mind. Now 이거는 번역하는 거 좀 어렵죠?
Hyunwoo: 네, 그래서 단어로 봐야 돼요.
Keith: It’s a little difficult to translate. So let’s go into a couple of examples.
Hyunwoo: 네. 첫 번째에는
Seol: 결심
Hyunwoo: 결심은 마음을 모으는 거예요 마음을 정하는 거예요 그래서 you make up your mind, make a decision, make a resolution 이런 뜻이에요.
Keitho: And what about another example?
Seol: 자존심
Hyunwoo: 자신을 존중하는 마음. 복잡해 보이지만 자존심이라는 말을 정말 많이 들을 수 있어요 because everybody has 자존심.
Keith: Self pride.
Hyunwoo: 자존심이 없는 사람은 없겠죠?
Seol: 그럼요. 여자들한테는 자존심이 생명이에요.
Keith: All right. So let’s move on to today’s grammar.

Lesson focus

Keith: Now today’s grammar points are actually maybe a little below intermediate but we wanted to go over it because it’s a very, very good review. So what’s the first one we have?
Seol: 을래, 을래?
Keith: Will you, would you. Now the construction of this is very easy but let’s go over a couple of examples to show what it means first. So how about in today’s conversation?
Hyunwoo: 네, 사장님이 인성이와 소연이에게 잠깐 이리 와 볼래?라고 했어요.
Keith: Okay would you come this way just for a moment. The verb that we have there was
Seol: 와 보다
Keith: To try coming or come by. So the verb that we are actually conjugating is the 보다 at the end. Let’s break it down really quick.
Seol: 와 보다
Keith: And the verb stem for the 와 보다 is
Seol: 와 보
Keith: Now here 받침이 없으니까 there is no consonant at the end. We add
Seol: ㄹ래
Keith: So what do we have?
Seol: 와 볼래
Keith: Would you come over here? Now this is a really, really good grammatical structure to use to ask somebody to do something because it’s very indirect, a lot more polite. Instead of just saying 여기 와 come here.
Hyunwoo: 네, 부탁하는 거 같죠.
Keith: Yeah like a favor 이리 와 볼래 Would you come over here for a second. So what about in today’s conversation, it came out again?
Hyunwoo: 네, 사장님 I think he is a very nice person and he says 그렇게 해 줄래?
Keith: Would you do that for me?
Hyunwoo: 네, 그렇게 해보다 그렇게 해 줄래라고 말하면 훨씬 it’s much nicer and 예의 바르죠.
Keith: Much more polite.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: So the difference between this grammar point and the imperative is that the imperative is actually telling someone, do this, do this but here you are actually asking someone, would you like to do this.
Seol: Keith, 이것 좀 줄래?
Keith: Would you give it to me, do you want to give it to me? Literally right?
Seol: Right.
Hyunwoo: Yeah right and to that, you can’t really say no.
Seol: 현우오빠, 나랑 같이 갈래요?
Keith: Would you like to go with me?
Hyunwoo: Depending on where you want to go. 어디 가는데요?
Seol: 저기 돈 내러. 계산하러.
Hyunwoo: 같이 안 갈래요.
Keith: Okay next example.
Hyunwoo: 일요일 아침에 전화해 줄래?
Keith: Would you call me on Sunday or literally do you want to call me on Sunday.
Hyunwoo: 네, 그리고 도움이 필요할 때 when I need help, I can say 좀 도와줄래?
Keith: Much nicer.
Seol: 싫어요.
Hyunwoo: I wasn’t asking you.
Seol: Okay sorry.
Hyunwoo: Keith, 좀 도와줄래?
Keith: No.
Seol: 잘 했어, Keith.
Hyunwoo: 여러분, 도와줄래요? No answer.
Keith: No answer. 다음 grammar point 넘어갈래.
Seol: Oh!
Hyunwoo: Oh!
Keith: So what do we have?
Seol: 시
Keith: Honorific infix. Now let’s have a couple of examples. We don’t want to go too much into the detail of this. If you want to find out about the construction of this, we have a full write up in the PDF but here this is the honorific infix. How did it come out in today’s conversation?
Seol: 인성이 이렇게 얘기하죠. 사장님, 걱정 마시고, 병원 가셨다가 집에 가서 쉬세요.
Keith There is a lot of 시s in there, right?
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: A lot of honorific infixes but the reason that he is using it is because he is talking to 사장님 the boss 그래서 좀 예의 바르게 해야죠?
Hyunwoo: 예, 그렇지 않으면 보너스도 없고 월급도 없고.
Keith: Yeah you got to be a little nicer. You got to honor the person a little more, be a little nicer because he is your boss.
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. 그래서 시가 많이 나왔어요.
Keith: If you are up for the challenge, we got a sentence for you. We got a lot of 시s in here. What do we got?
Seol: 걱정 마시고, 병원 가셨다가 집에 가서 쉬세요.
Keith: And just to give a little contrast, let’s give it without the honorific infix?
Seol: 걱정 말고, 병원 갔다가 집에 가서 쉬어요.
Keith: Okay. What else came out in today’s conversation?
Hyunwoo: 그래서 오늘 배운 할래, 줄래 이런 표현하고 시를 합칠 수 있어요. We can combine the two together.
Keith: Because you want to be a little more polite.
Hyunwoo: Yeah even more polite than just being polite 그래서 해 줄래가
Seol: 해 주실래요
Hyunwoo: 그리고 갈래요가
Seol: 가실래요
Hyunwoo: 이렇게 바뀌어요.
Keith: Actually I hear it a lot in restaurants too 이것 좀 갖다 주실래요?
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요.
Seol: Wow!
Hyunwoo: If you can say that in a Korean restaurant, it will be very, very appreciated.
Keith: More than 이거 주세요.
Seol: 당연하죠. 이거 주실래요가 훨씬 더 예의 발라요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah. That’s why the first thing I say in a restaurant is 메뉴판 좀 주실래요?
Keith: Do you want to show me a menu but would you please show me a menu.
Hyunwoo: 네

Outro

Keith: All right. So let’s wrap it up over here. We are running out of time. So, KoreanClass101에 오실래요?
Seol: 네, 갈래요!
Hyunwoo: 네, 여러분도 오실래요?
Seol: 네, 갈게요.
