Lesson Transcript

In today’s lesson, we will introduce you to some phrases useful in case you need medical assistance. When traveling, sometimes the body takes a little time to adjust and the immune system is no different. So today, we will go over some phrases that will help you get to a location where you can get medical assistance. We will start with the phrase, please take me to the hospital. Now in Korea, instead of going to the doctor’s office, you would typically go to a hospital. Even for something that’s not really a big deal, maybe a cold or a fever or the flu, you would go to the hospital.
Now in Korean, please take me to the hospital is, 병원으로 데려가 주세요 (byeongwoneuro deryeoga juseyo). One time slowly, 병원으로 데려가 주세요 (byeongwoneuro deryeoga juseyo). And now by syllable, 병-원-으-로 데-려-가 주-세-요 (byeong-won-eu-ro de-ryeo-ga ju-se-yo). The first word 병원 (byeongwon) means hospital. This is immediately followed by 으로 (euro), a directional particle. These two are spoken together. So let’s hear them together, 병원으로 (byeongwoneuro). The latter part of the phrase is 데려가 주세요 (deryeoga juseyo) which means please take me. One time by syllable, it’s 데-려-가 주-세-요 (de-ryeo-ga ju-se-yo). Together we have, 병원으로 데려가 주세요 (byeongwoneuro deryeoga juseyo) which literally translates into hospital to take me please or take me to the hospital please. If things aren’t too bad, perhaps you only need to go to a pharmacy. In Korean, please take me to the pharmacy is, 약국으로 데려가 주세요 (yakgugeuro deryeoga juseyo). One time slowly, 약-국-으-로 데-려-가 주-세-요 (yak-guk-eu-ro de-ryeo-ga ju-se-yo). The first word 약국 (yakguk) is pharmacy. Once again, it’s followed by 으로 (euro) which is the directional particle.
Let’s hear it one more time. 약국으로(yakgugeuro). The latter part is once again 데려가 주세요 (deryeoga juseyo) which means take me please. One time by syllable, 데-려-가 주-세-요 (de-ryeo-ga ju-se-yo). So altogether we have pharmacy to take me please or please take me to the pharmacy. Notice how the only thing that changes between the first and the second phrase is 병원 (byeongwon) and 약국 (yakguk). We replaced hospital with pharmacy. Let’s hear these two phrases side by side. 병원으로 데려가 주세요 (byeongwoneuro deryeoga juseyo), 약국으로 데려가 주세요 (yakgugeuro deryeoga juseyo). And just for insurance purposes, we should cover the phrase, please call an ambulance which is 구급차를 불러 주세요 (gugeupchareul bulleo juseyo). Now by syllable,구-급-차-를 불-러 주-세-요 (gu-geup-cha-reul bul-reo ju-se-yo). The first word 구급차 (gugeupcha) means ambulance. This is followed by 를 (reul) which is an object marker.
Let’s hear these two together, 구급차를 (gugeupchareul). The next part is 불러 주세요 (bulleo juseyo). One time by syllable, it’s 불-러-주-세-요 (bul-reo-ju-se-yo) which means call for please. So altogether, we have 구급차를 불러 주세요 (gugeupchareul bulleo juseyo) which means an ambulance call for please or call for an ambulance please. Now, if you noticed, all of our phrases end with 주세요 (juseyo) which is used when you are asking for someone to do something for you or on your behalf. The first two phrases we had 데려가 주세요 (deryeoga juseyo) which is take me please. The second phrase is 불러 주세요 (bulleo juseyo) which is call for please. You are asking for someone to do something for you. That’s why you need the 주세요 (juseyo).
Okay. To close our today’s lesson, we’d like for you to practice what you’ve learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So 화이팅 (hwaiting)!
Please take me to the hospital - 병원으로 데려가 주세요 (byeongwoneuro deryeoga juseyo). Please take me to the pharmacy - 약국으로 데려가 주세요 (yakgugeuro deryeoga juseyo). Please call for an ambulance - 구급차를 불러 주세요 (gugeupchareul bulleo juseyo).
All right, that’s going to do it for today.
