Seol: Yeah she is just gone.
Hyunwoo: Yeah she was gone. And in this dialogue which is happening the next day Minho and Inseong are fighting.
Seol: Fighting for what?
Keith: Yeah I don’t know, I don’t know. The guy is strange Minho.
Hyunwoo: Fighting for their 자존심.
Keith: For their pride?
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: Okay well men have a lot of pride. Lot of things to fight over.
Hyunwoo: And women don’t?
Keith: I don’t know.
Seol: I have 자존심.
Keith: Yeah.
Seol: I have lots of things to fight over. So…
Keith: Do you fight with a lot of your friends too 친구들이랑 많이 싸워요?
Seol: 아니요. 전 착해서 안 싸워요.
Keith: I knew you were going to say that. 착해서 안 싸워요.
Hyunwoo: 빨리 넘어갑시다.
Seol: 네
Keith: Okay all right. So let’s listen in.

Keith: Why didn't you tell me about dating Soyeon?
(14)인성: 내가 왜 너한테 말해야 되는데?

(15)민호: 둘이 사귀는 거야, 뭐야?
Keith: Are you two going out or something?
(16)인성: 우쒸... 그래! 사귄다! 왜?
Keith: Yes! We are, alright?
(17)민호: 안 돼!
Keith: You can't!
(18)인성: 뭐가 안 돼!? (싸움 소리)
Keith: Why not!?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Keith: Minho is a feisty guy. How do you say feisty in Korean? What’s feisty?
Seol: 싸움을 거는? 잘 싸우는?
Hyunwoo: 시비꾼 or 시비를 잘 거는 사람. 시비걸다.
Keith: 시비걸다
Hyunwoo: It’s like being picky, provocative.
Keith: Do you have people like him around you?
Hyunwoo: Luckily I don’t have anybody like that.
Seol: But I have.
Keith: Yeah.
Seol: Yeah 현우.
Keith: He is very feisty.
Seol: Yeah.
Hyunwoo: Yeah maybe I don’t have anybody like that because I am that.
Seol: Yes, yes.
Keith: Oh you are that guy.
Seol: Yeah you just got the point.
Hyunwoo: 아니에요.
Keith: You are that guy.
Hyunwoo: Don’t believe him everybody.
Keith: As we are talking about, that phrase came out. 무슨 상관이야, 너한테 무슨 상관이야 What’s it matter to you? What’s it got to do with you? And actually we can go over that in our vocabulary section.
VOCAB LIST
Keith: So what’s our first vocabulary word?
Seol: 망치다
Keith: To ruin, to mess up.
Seol: 망치다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 망치다 [natural native speed]
Keith: Next we have
Seol: 데이트하다
Keith: To date, to go on a date.
Seol: 데이트하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 데이트하다 [natural native speed]
Keith: Next
Seol: 시작하다
Keith: To start, to begin.
Seol: 시작하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 시작하다 [natural native speed]
Keith: And 그 다음에는
Seol: 영화표
Keith: Movie ticket.
Seol: 영화표 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 영화표 [natural native speed]
Keith: Next
Seol: 상관
Keith: Relation, matter.
Seol: 상관 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 상관 [natural native speed]
Keith: And last
Seol: 사귀다
Keith: To go out with, to date
Seol: 사귀다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 사귀다 [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: Okay we had two to dates. 데이트하다 and 사귀다. What’s the difference?
Hyunwoo: 사귀다 means more go steady with someone be on a boyfriend, girlfriend relationship with someone but 데이트하다 is the actual act of going out with that person.
Seol: 예를 들어서 저랑 현우씨랑 사귀어요. I am so sorry Hyunwoo but this is just an example. I don’t want this situation so…
Hyunwoo: Okay.
Keith: But why not with me?
Seol: 글쎄요. 여하튼 저랑 현우씨랑 사귀는 사이인데 오늘 우리는 데이트를 해요. 영화를 보러 가는 데이트를 해요.
Keith: Okay so you are together and you are going on a date today.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: If you are 안 사귀어도 can you still go on a date?
Seol: 할 수 있어요.
Hyunwoo: But that will be a different kind of date.
Seol: Umm.
Hyunwoo: 제가 만약에 데이트라는 말을 들으면 if I hear the word 데이트 the Korean word 데이트, not a date, the English word, I would easily assume that you are a boyfriend and a girlfriend.
Keith: I think that’s very Korean culture though. Many times, you don’t really go on dates if you are not boyfriend and girlfriend.
Seol: It’s not restricted in the relationship of boyfriend and girlfriend. If you are kind of romantic with that person, you can 데이트 할 수 있어요.
Keith: But not necessarily 여자친구, 남자친구.
Seol: 저한테는 그래요. 현우씨한테는 좀 다른 거 같은데?
Hyunwoo: 네, 저는 사귀는 사람하고만 데이트 해요.
Seol: 현우씨
Hyunwoo: I am not a playboy.
Seol: 현우씨는 좀 보수적이고요. 저는 좀 오픈되어 있어요.
Hyunwoo: Okay. Okay I will be the conservative guy but 사귀다 is a very tricky word at times.
Seol: 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah because Keith and I can 사귀다 but not…
Keith: We are not dating.
Hyunwoo: We are not dating.
Keith: We are not dating.
Hyunwoo: We are 사귀다 as 친구. 친구를 사귀다 make friends.
Keith: So it kind of means to make a relationship. So if you make a new friend, 오늘 친구 사귀었어. I made a friend today.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: But also make a relationship with a boyfriend or girlfriend, 설이랑 사귀어. We make a relationship.
Hyunwoo: 그래서 좀 애매하죠.
Seol: 네
Hyunwoo: Since it is a little bit hard to tell which one is which, 사귀다 in the sense of making friends is often combined with the word 친구, 친구를 사귀다. 한국에 와서 새로운 친구를 많이 사귀었다.
Keith: I came to Korea and made a lot of friends.
Seol: 그리고 여자친구 남자친구 로맨틱한 relationship일 경우에는 한국에 와서 새로운 여자 친구를 사귀었다.
Keith: I am going steady with a new boyfriend, new girlfriend. Let’s move on to our next vocabulary word. What’s our next word?
Hyunwoo: 영화표
Keith: Now very simple word, movie ticket. Why are we talking about it?
Seol: Because it’s about hanja again.
Keith: We’d love hanja over here.
Seol: I love hanja.
Keith: No last time you said you didn’t like it.
Seol: No I love hanja. I am an expert of hanja. So ask me anything.
Hyunwoo: She is an expert at everything.
Seol: Yeah kind of.
Keith: Okay that last 영화표 that last 표 what does that mean?
Hyunwoo: It means a ticket.
Keith: So whenever you hear this word 표, you can relate something into your head, oh it’s a ticket of some sort. So let’s have a couple of examples. How about some really simpler examples?
Seol: 기차표
Keith: Train ticket.
Hyunwoo: 비행기표
Keith: Plane ticket and let’s move on. Too easy. How about throw a vote, to cast a vote?
Hyunwoo: 투표
Keith: It’s a difficult word.
Hyunwoo: Yeah but don’t worry about it. Just as long as you get the 표 in there
Keith: It’s a ticket of some sort, a vote.
Hyunwoo: 네 and
Keith: And how about to open or count a vote?
Hyunwoo: 개표. Again that’s a very difficult word.
Keith: Actually I don’t think it’s such a difficult word. We can actually break that word down again.
Hyunwoo: 개
Keith: To open.
Hyunwoo: 표
Keith: Ticket.
Hyunwoo: Count of votes.
Keith: Yeah. It’s not so difficult once you know the hanja behind it.
Hyunwoo: Yeah it’s so easy.
Keith: Remember we have hanja in the PDF. So if you want to study up on that, check it out.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: All right. So let’s move on to our grammar point.

Lesson focus

Keith: What do we have?
Seol: 은/는데
Keith: Now this isn’t really translated well because it’s just a sentence ender but we can explain the nuance behind the sentence. So in today’s conversation, this sentence ender has a few different nuances. So what’s one of the nuances that we have?
Hyunwoo: The first one in today’s conversation is 잘 되고 있었는데.
Keith: It was going so well. Actually in that sentence, you can just say 잘 되고 있었어. It was going so well but what’s the difference between 잘 되고 있었어 and
Seol: 잘 되고 있었는데
Hyunwoo: It’s a form of exclamation. You are upset about the fact and you are excited and you want to express your anger 아쉬움, 안타까움.
Seol: 어휴 잘 되고 있었는데!!
Keith: It’s more exclamatory.
Hyunwoo: Yeah it would be very bland and weak if I were to say 잘 되고 있었어 so weak. I am not that upset about it at all.
Keith: So what about something simple like, oh this food is delicious.
Hyunwoo: 맛있는데?
Keith: And that’s very exclamatory.
Hyunwoo: Yeah I say it is very often.
Keith: Yeah when you strongly believe it.
Hyunwoo: Yeah like I feel more comfortable saying this than just saying 맛있어. Since I am using this exclamatory expression, I am expecting my friend to respond to me.
Seol: Yeah I feel that I have to respond him.
Hyunwoo: Yeah.
Seol: 오 정말 맛있다.
Keith: He threw a invisible hook in your mouth.
Seol: Yeah
Keith: He is fishing her response.
Keith: So that’s the exclamation. What’s the other usage?
Hyunwoo: The other usage is very important to know. Here in today’s dialogue, Minho said 그건 또 뭔데?
Keith: And what’s that?
Hyunwoo: And 인성 said, 무슨 상관인데?
Keith: And what’s it matter to you?
Hyunwoo: 왜 말해야 되는데?
Keith: Why should I have to tell you?
Hyunwoo: In these three sentences, you are asking for the real motive or reason behind the action, remark or whatever.
Seol: 뭔가 좀 공격적인 느낌도 드는데요.
Keith: Kind of aggressive.
Hyunwoo: 네, 공격적이고 퉁명스럽고
Keith: Kind of abrupt.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: Can we have a couple of sample situations where we use this aggressive and abrupt sentence ender?
Hyunwoo: 제가 설한테 전화를 했어요. 그런데 안 받아서 3번, 4번, 5번 계속 걸었어요. 그런 다음에 I met her today and asked her, why didn’t you answer my phone calls.
Seol: 무슨 일인데? 왜 내가 전화를 받아야 되는데? 왜 이렇게 내 일에 상관하는데? Imagine the situation that Hyunwoo is stalking me.
Hyunwoo: Yeah just a imaginary situation.
Seol: Yeah I know. So Hyunwoo always calls me and bothers me a lot and I just tell him that 무슨 상관인데? 왜 나한테 자꾸 전화하는데? 왜 나 귀찮게 하는데?
Keith: Why do you keep bothering me? 왜 이렇게 귀찮게 해 and 왜 이렇게 귀찮게 하는데 the difference is 귀찮게 해 you are annoying but
Seol: 왜 이렇게 귀찮게 하는데
Keith: It’s like man, man…stop.
Hyunwoo: And what’s the motive behind it. Why are you doing this to me 그런 뜻이죠.
Keith: Not necessarily that you really want to know but you know something is up. Okay let’s move on. What’s our next grammar point?
Hyunwoo: 은/는 것
Keith: A nominalization of verbs. What’s in today’s dialogue?
Seol: 데이트하는 것
Keith: The dating, the noun but what’s the verb there? What’s the original verb that we have?
Seol: 데이트하다
Keith: And we just take the verb stem
Seol: 데이트하
Keith: And then we add
Seol: 는 것
Keith: And now it’s a noun.
Seol: 데이트하는 것
Keith: Dating. Okay what about the other one?
Seol: 사귀는 것
Keith: Going steady, the noun if it is a noun.
Hyunwoo: It’s in the noun form.
Keith: Yeah in Korean at least.
Hyunwoo: Yes but remember here in this dialogue, Minho said 데이트하는 거 instead of 데이트하는 것 and I often say 거 instead of 것 because 거 is the same thing and it’s easier to pronounce.
Seol: So it can be 데이트하는 거, 사귀는 거.
Keith: Yeah it’s just a colloquial way to say it’s much easier but in writing, what do you write?
Seol: 것
Keith: Yeah but no one really says that right for the most part and actually there might be a little pronunciation challenge if you will because a lot of times when you add a particle to the end of it specifically the subject marking particle because it’s a noun now, it’s either 가 or 이.
Hyunwoo: 그런데 받침이 있을 때에는 이가 되죠.
Keith: When we have 것이 with the subject marking particle, it typically is pronounced just as
Seol: 게. 그래서 원래는 데이트하는 것이 재미있어라고 말해야 되는데 편하게 말할 때는 데이트하는 게 재미있어, 데이트하는 게 좋아.
Keith: Yeah but originally it’s the subject marking particle in there but it just kind of fuses into one syllable 게. Okay let’s have a couple of examples.
Hyunwoo: Okay. Here is one example. This is what I really like 공부하는 것이 재미있어요 or 공부하는 게 재미있어요.
Keith: Same thing different pronunciation.
Seol: 진짜? 저는 노는 게 재미있어요.
Keith: I like hanging out or
Seol: 노는 것이 재미있어요.
Keith: Yeah but that sounds kind of like pompous.
Seol: 노는 게 is more common.
Keith: Colloquial yeah.
Hyunwoo: And any other example from you?
Keith: 먹는 게 좋아요. I like eating.
Seol: 저도요.
Hyunwoo: 저도요.
Keith: We are all simple beings over here. Great job. How do you feel? 재미있었는데? It was fun, exclamatory.
Hyunwoo: 오늘 레슨 정말 재미있었는데요?
Seol: 그렇죠? 정말 재미있었는데.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: Exclamatory or aggressive and abrupt.
Seol: Aggressive and abrupt. 재미있었는데!

Outro

Keith: It was fun, man! Okay, 끝났어요.
Seol: 저는 KoreanClass101 듣는 게 좋아요.
Keith: Oh…
Hyunwoo: 이제 가는 게 어때요?
Seol: 먹으러 가는 게 더 좋아요.
Hyunwoo: KoreanClass101보다?
Seol: 비슷비슷하게
Keith: Bye bye.
Seol: 안녕.
Hyunwoo: 안녕히 계세요.
