INTRODUCTION
Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다.
Keith: Keith here. She’s All Mine.
Seol: She’s all yours?
Keith: You are all mine.
Seol: Oh no!
Keith: No.
Seol: No thank you.
Keith: You said it so quickly. 너무 빨리 말했어요.
Seol: 네, 고민도 안 해요.
Keith: No thinking whatsoever.
Seol: 네, 고민할 필요도 없어요. No thank you.
Keith: Okay. Let’s move on. So 전에 대화는 어떤 얘기였어요?
Seol: 지혜가 소연이에게 민호랑 사귄다고 말했어요.
Keith: She said we are going out and how does she respond.
Seol: 어쩌다가? I cannot believe.
Keith: Like how? How did that happen? 오늘의 대화는 무슨 내용이에요?
Seol: 민호가 인성에게 밥을 사 준다고 하고 있어요.
Keith: And why does he want to buy him food?
Seol: 잘 모르겠는데. 한번 들어보고 맞춰 볼까요?
Keith: Sounds good.

Seol: 이번에는 영어와 함께
(1)민호: 인성아, 너 오늘 시간 있냐?
Keith: Inseong, do you have some time today?
(2)인성: 왜?
Keith: Why?
(3)민호: 내가 밥 한 번 쏠게.
Keith: I'll treat you out today.
(4)인성: 어쭈, 세상 오래 살고 볼 일이네? 니가 밥을 쏜다고?
Keith: Oh, now I've seen it all. You're going to treat me?
(5)민호: 그러지 말고, 가자.
Keith: Don't be like that, let's go.
(6)인성: 안돼, 안돼. 가는 건 좋은데, 이유를 말해 봐. 또 무슨 부탁인데?
Keith: No, no. I can go with you, but tell me why? What kind of favor are you going to ask me this time?
(7)민호: 야, 야, 야. 친구끼리 부탁이 있어야 밥을 사 주냐?
Keith: Hey, hey, hey, do you need a favor to ask to treat a friend?
(8)인성: 너는 그렇잖아.
Keith: I know you do.
(9)민호: 참... 나 지혜랑 사귄다.
Keith: By the way, I'm dating Jihye.

Keith: What? You said you were going to help her buy a laptop. Did you buy her one?
(11)민호: 질투하는 마음, 다 이해한다. 지혜 진짜 귀엽더라?! 딱 내 스타일이야!
Keith: I know why you're so jealous. Jihye is so cute! She's just my style!
(12)인성: 에휴... 걱정이다, 걱정...
Keith: I'm so worried.
(13)민호: 뭐라고?
Keith: What?
(14)인성: 아니야. 가자.
Keith: Nothing. Let's go.

Keith: This seems like the same conversation we had last week except with Minho and Inseong.

Seol: Umm…
Keith: 아닌가요?
Seol: 맞아요. 첫 대화부터 그렇잖아요.
Keith: 첫 대화부터 그래요.
Seol: 네.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: 설씨
Seol: 네
Keith: 단어에 대해서 더 자세하게 얘기해 볼까요?
Seol: 음...네
Keith: 무슨 고민이 있어요? What are you thinking about?
Seol: 여러분들이 다 알고 있을까봐서.
Keith: Because everyone’s so smart.
Seol: Umm…
Keith: Well actually a lot of these words came out in our previous lessons right?
Seol: 맞아요.
Keith: 쏘다.
Seol: 쏘다. 오늘은 내가 쏠게.
Keith: Yeah we talked about this in our previous lessons but just to go over it real quick, to treat somebody but this is usually referring to food.
Seol: 맞아요. 오늘 내가 점심 쏠게.
Keith: Do you ever use it for other things like I will buy your computer. 컴퓨터 쏠게.
Seol: 아니, 너무 비싸서 컴퓨터는 못 쏘고요. 점심은 쏠 수 있을 것 같아요.
Keith: 점심이랑
Seol: 술?
Keith: Alcohol okay.
Seol: 음료수, 과자, 빵 뭐 이런 것들.
Keith: Just like little snacks here and there but I think they are all consumable goods. 먹을 수 있는 거죠?
Seol: 맞아요. 보통은 사다라고 하잖아요. 내가 살게라고 하는데 쏘다 이러면 더 귀엽지 않아요?
Keith: 그런가요? I am not even sure if it’s cute. Well yeah why don’t we move on to that word then 귀엽다 to be cute. Now this has an irregular conjugation because of the ㅂ in the verb stem 귀엽 but we don’t want to get too much into the conjugation of this verb but we have a full write up in the PDF. Let’s have a couple of examples.
Seol: 이 강아지 너무 귀여워요.
Keith: This dog or puppy is so cute.
Seol: Keith 모자 너무 귀엽다.
Keith: Oh your hat is so cute. What about me?
Seol: 별로
Keith: Again so quick. Okay so I want to take a look at our last word actually.
Seol: 걱정
Keith: Worry, concern. Now 이거는 동사로 어떻게 만들어요?. How do you make this into a verb?
Seol: 걱정하다
Keith: To worry. The actual act of worrying. Now we can also use it with a different verb.
Seol: 걱정이 있다
Keith: To have a concern. Now 오늘의 대화에는 어떻게 나왔어요? How did it come out in today’s conversation?
Seol: 에휴... 걱정이다, 걱정...
Keith: Sounds like my mom. Well 걱정이다 we can break this down. Let’s break it down real quick.
Seol: 걱정
Keith: Worry, concern.
Seol: 이다
Keith: The copula. Worry is, concern is. So basically you are a concern, you are a worry. You make me worry.
Seol: 맞아요. Keith는 정말 걱정이죠.
Keith: No you 걱정이죠.
Seol: 넘어가요.
Keith: Because you know it’s true.
Seol: 맞아요. 그래서 저 내일 비가 올까봐 걱정이에요.
Keith: I worry that it will rain tomorrow but also we can say
Seol: 내일 비가 올까 걱정해요.
Keith: We have that 하다 at the end and this noun can be used with a lot of different verbs 있다,
Seol: 하다, 되다,
Keith: And 이다 the copula. To be a concern.
Seol: Keith는 걱정이다.
Keith: All right. Thank you I guess. All right so let’s move on to our grammar point. I want to get to the grammar point today.

Lesson focus

Seol: Yeah this is about you and your friends.
Keith: Umm well let’s backtrack a little bit. Today who are the two people talking 누가 얘기하죠?
Seol: 민호랑 인성이요. They are all males.
Keith: Yeah and they are close. They are very good friends. So what did they use in today’s conversation? It came out in the first line 첫 번째 줄에 나왔죠?
Seol: 네. 인성아, 너 오늘 시간 있냐?
Keith: 있냐
Seol: 다르죠. 예전에 배웠던 것들과.
Keith: Yeah so what’s the typical question?
Seol: 너 시간 있어?
Keith: Do you have time but in today’s conversation
Seol: 시간 있냐?
Keith: Do you have time but it has a different nuance to it. 그 nuance가 뭐예요?
Seol: 남자들이 친한 남자들에게 편하게 쓰는 말이죠.
Keith: Yeah you use this when you are very, very close with your friends and I think that’s the only time you really use it right?
Seol: 맞아요. 남자가 남자들에게만 쓰는 말이죠? 그리고 정말 친해야 돼요.
Keith: Yeah when men speak to each other and they are extremely close.
Seol: 예를 들어서요 제가 엄마에게 엄마 시간 있냐 이러면 저희 엄마 놀래서 기절하실 걸요.
Keith: I don’t know if you will fade but she will probably hit you a couple of times.
Seol: 맞아요.
Keith: What do you do, what did you say? Don’t say that.
Seol: 이 자식이 엄마에게 무슨 말이야! 이러실 거예요.
Keith: Yeah 맞아요. So remember, please, please, please be very, very careful, extremely careful only with your friends. Very, very close friends and also if you are much, much older than somebody probably like an adult talking to children.
Seol: 네, 저희 아빠도 가끔 저에게 이렇게 말씀하세요. 설아 밥 먹었냐?
Keith: Did you eat with the 냐 at the end
Seol: 냐
Keith: Well does your mom ever use it to you?
Seol: 별로 안 쓰시는데
Keith: Yeah so it’s mostly a male thing.
Seol: 네, 아빠가 쓰세요.
Keith: Umm all right. So let’s go over how to construct this. Okay let’s go over a couple of sample sentences. I think the best way to show how to construct this is go with the original sentence, the neutral intimate politeness level. Of course we are using intimate politeness level over here. So how about in today’s conversation 첫 번째 줄은?
Seol: 너 오늘 시간 있어?
Keith: That’s the neutral version but the masculine version
Seol: 너 오늘 시간 있냐?
Keith: Now let’s take those two 있어 and 있냐. You just replace 어 with 냐.
Seol: Very simple.
Keith: Yeah. 또 어디서 나왔어요? In line #7, we have
Seol: 밥을 사 줘?
Keith: Originally that 줘 is 주어. So once again, we replace that 어 with
Seol: 냐. So it’s 밥을 사 주냐?
Keith: And where else did it come out, line #10?
Seol: 노트북을 사 줬어?
Keith: Okay and 사 줬어 and once again we replace that 어.
Seol: 노트북을 사 줬냐?
Keith: Very masculine.
Seol: Yeah it is.
Keith: Just for a quick reference, we work together but we are also friends. Can I use this with you?
Seol: I think yes but I am two years older than you. So….
Keith: 1.5 years older but by Korean age 2 years.
Seol: Yeah so I usually recommend you to use 냐.
Keith: Yeah because you are older than me. So it’s not very professional either. We work together too. So it’s not very nice but once again, if you are very, very close to your friends, there is no need to be nice, right?
Seol: You should be nice even though you are close.
Keith: No, no, no my best friends were the worst friends. I am just – yeah, we are rude to each other but it’s out of love.
Seol: Umm yeah, I think masculine guys believe that’s the friendship.
Keith: So do you see me more as a man today? No.
Seol: No. No, yes yeah.
Keith: Yeah, yeah pass…Okay let’s move on to our next grammar point. We have another reported speech in today’s grammar.
Seol: 다더니
Keith: Now what’s the difference between 다고 that reported speech, 했고, 뭐뭐했어 what’s the difference with all of these?
Seol: 다더니, 오늘 배우는 ㄴ다더니의 경우는 예상치 못 했던 말들을 할 때 그리고 생각했던 것과 반대의 결과가 일어났을 때 그럴 때 살짝 놀란 느낌이죠.
Keith: Yeah when you have that nuance of being surprised. So you take a reported speech and whatever the result is and you didn’t expect it. So you are a little surprised. So didn’t you say this was going to happen?
Seol: 맞아요.
Keith: So this is usually translated as, didn’t you say because you didn’t expect the result.
Seol: 맞아요. 제가 예를 한번 들어 볼까요?
Keith: Please do.
Seol: Oh Keith, 학교 간다더니 지금 노래방이야?
Keith: Didn’t you say you were going to school but you are at 노래방 now.
Seol: Something that you never expect.
Keith: Umm so 오늘의 대화에는 어떻게 나왔죠? what about today’s conversation?
Seol: 도와주러 간다더니
Keith: Go to help her. Didn’t you say you were going to help her?
Seol: So basically 민호는 그냥 도와주러 간 거잖아요. 근데 결과적으로 지혜랑 사귀었잖아요.
Keith: Yeah it’s something that 인성 did not expect at all.
Seol: 맞아요.
Keith: So that’s why he uses this reported speech. Now reported speech for just nouns are a little different in terms of conjugation. So if you want to check out the conjugation for the nouns, be sure to check out today’s PDF but let’s go into the verbs. How do you construct this? Actually we should probably get into an example. Let’s say I don’t know this person but Seol you see me and this person the next day and we are hanging out.
Seol: 모른다더니...
Keith: Didn’t you say you didn’t know this person.
Seol: 너 모른다더니.
Keith: And the construction behind this is very simple. Let’s say I said 이 사람 몰라요. That’s in the standard politeness level but we take that and then we change it to the plain declarative 모른다. 그 사람 모른다.
Seol: Keith, 너 현우씨 모른다더니.
Keith: Didn’t you say you don’t know Hyunwoo?
Seol: Umm…
Keith: So in the plain declarative, if you are not sure of the conjugation, we have a link to that in our grammar links in the premium learning center but the plain declarative is different for descriptive verbs and action verbs. So descriptive verbs, let’s have a couple of examples. Oh that dog is so cute and then I show you the dog.
Seol: 귀엽다더니 못 생겼잖아!
Keith: It’s an ugly dog. Didn’t you say that it’s cute? So remember, because all the plain declaratives end in 다, we just add 더니 and it’s a little different for nouns but once again if you want to read up on that, check out today’s PDF.

Outro

Keith: Okay so that’s going to do it. See you later.
Seol: 어, 더 한다더니 끝인 거야?
Keith: Oh you want to do some more?
Seol: 아니요.
Keith: 아니야?
Seol: 나중에 봐요.
