안녕하세요 여러분. Koreanclass101.com 하나하나 한글시리즈의 에이미입니다. Hi, everybody! I’m Amy and welcome to Hana Hana Hangul on KoreanClass101.com - The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Hangul, the Korean alphabet.
In the last lesson, we looked at four compound vowels. Those four vowels were a combination of two vertical vowels. Today we will look at vowels that are a combination of one vertical and one horizontal vowel.
To start off, let’s use the simplest horizontal and the simplest vertical vowel: ㅡ and ㅣ. Together, ㅡ(ue), and ㅣ(i), they make ㅢ[ui].
[alternating male/female pronunciation]
These vowels are pretty easy to read, since it’s not really like completely new sounds -- it’s just two vowel sounds combined together.
For example, the sound of ㅘ (wa) is easy to catch because it goes from ㅗ(o) to ㅏ(a). Try saying ㅗ and ㅏin a row and get faster and faster until it becomes one sound. ㅗ,ㅏ. ㅗ,ㅏ. ㅘ. See?
All of these vowels will have a space in the upper left corner where you can put the consonant. Take a look at the example word.
의미 means “meaning” 의미
Let’s make things just a little bit more complex. ㅗ(o) and ㅣ(i) together make ㅚ(oe). This is the only double vowel that sounds different than its individual parts.
[alternating male/female pronunciation]
회사 means “company” 회사
Moving on, ㅗ(o) and ㅏ(a) together make ㅘ(wa).
[alternating male/female pronunciation]
과일 means fruit. 과일
ㅗ(o) and ㅐ(ae) together make ㅙ(wae).
[alternating male/female pronunciation]
왜 means why
If you wanted to ask someone the question “why?” you could say 왜요? 왜요?
Before the end of this lesson, let’s go over all these vowels one more time!
That’s it! In the next lesson we will finish up the rest of the vowels, and you’ll know everything about Hangul! You’re almost there, so I’ll see you on the next Hana Hana Hangul! 여러분 다음에 만나요!
