INTRODUCTION
Mihyeon: 안녕하세요. 미현입니다.
Junsu: Hi everyone. I am Junsu.
Hyunwoo: And I am Hyunwoo.
Junsu:I do like it.
Hyunwoo: This is the first part in the second mini-series in this lower intermediate level and I am joined by two lovely ladies, Mihyeon and Junsu.
Hyunwoo: 미현씨, 요즘 정말 덥죠?
Mihyeon: 네. 무더워요.
Hyunwoo: 무더워요? What does that mean?
Junsu: It means to be hot and humid.
Hyunwoo: 아 맞아요. 한국의 여름은 무더울 때가 많은 것 같아요. 그렇죠? 네, 한국의 여름은 정말 무더울 때가 많은 것 같아요. 특히 7월, 8월 되면 정말 무덥죠?
Mihyeon: 네. 근데 덥긴 더운데 에어컨 있어서 괜찮아요.
Hyunwoo: But you said, it is hot 덥기는 더워요. And that’s exactly what we are going to learn today but before we look at this new expression, let’s review what we learned before a little bit. 준수씨, 지난 시간에 우리 뭐 배웠죠?
Junsu: Well in the previous lesson, we learned how to say even before you said that, I was going to do something, something which was
Mihyeon: 그렇지 않아도 뭐뭐 하려고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: And could you give us a little reminder example sentence?
Mihyeon: 그렇지 않아도 하려고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: Oh okay so please give me an example sentence.
Mihyeon: 그게 예문이었어요.
Hyunwoo: Oh I see. That was the example sentence. So you said, yeah, even before you mentioned it, I was going to do it. I was going to give you the example sentence. Right, that was a good example sentence inside an example sentence. So again what are we going to learn today?
Junsu: Today we are going to learn something very interesting. Going to look at how to emphasize things and say something like I did do it, I do like it and so on.
Hyunwoo: Okay I think today’s lesson will be another very interesting one. So 오늘의 대화는 today’s lesson 누구와 누구 사이의 대화예요, 미현씨?
Mihyeon: 어, 여기 미현이도 있네요. 네. 미현과 정호의 대화입니다.
Hyunwoo: Is it just another Mihyeon or is it you?
Mihyeon: 미현이라는 이름이 진짜 흔하거든요 한국에서.
Hyunwoo: 미현이라는 이름이 그렇게 많아요?
Junsu: Yeah I think I have seen a lot. I had about two of them in my class in middle school.
Hyunwoo: But Mihyeon, you are the only Mihyeon that I actually know in person.
Mihyeon: 음...그렇죠. 아, 네 그래요. 현우라는 이름도 준수라는 이름도 좀 흔한 이름이긴 하지만 저는 제 친구 중에 본 적이 없어요.
Hyunwoo: Okay so we are all special to each other and what kind of politeness level are they using?
Junsu: 미현과 정호는 친구이기 때문에 반말을 쓰고 있어요.
Hyunwoo: 네. 존댓말을 쓸 필요가 없죠? Okay. 그러면 들어 볼까요?
Junsu: Let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
(1)Mihyeon: Hey, Jeongho!
(2)정호: 어? 미현아.
(2)Jeongho: Huh? Mihyeon!
(3)미현: 어? 너 왜 혼자야?
(3)Mihyeon: Huh? Why are you alone?
(4)정호: 응? 왜? 무슨 일이야?
(4)Jeongho: What? Why? What happened?
(5)미현: 아까 민수가 너 찾았는데, 만났어?
(5)Mihyeon: Minsu was looking for you earlier. Did you meet him?
(6)정호: 응. 보기는 봤어.
(6)Jeongho: Yeah, I saw him.
(7)미현: 보기는 봤어? 무슨 뜻이야?
(7)Mihyeon: You saw him? What do you mean?
(8)정호: 응. 보기는 봤는데, 아무 얘기도 안 했어.
(8)Jeongho: Yeah, I saw him, but I didn't talk with him at all.
(9)미현: 진짜? 이상하네... 아까는 너한테 꼭 할 얘기가 있다고 했는데.
(9)Mihyeon: Really? That's strange. Because earlier, he said he had something he had to tell you.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Mihyeon: 음...민수가 무슨 이야기를 하려고 했을까요?
Junsu: Not sure but it seems to be something very important.
Hyunwoo: Yeah but I disagree because if it is something important, why would he say nothing even when he actually met Jeongho?
Junsu: Maybe he was going to tell him he did something wrong but then he changed his mind.
Hyunwoo: Yeah I think he chickened out.
Mihyeon: 아니면 정호를 만났을 때 할 이야기를 잊어버렸을지도 몰라요.
Hyunwoo: 음...그럴 수도 있겠군요. Maybe he forgot but today we won’t be able to find out what really happened in Minsu’s mind but we are only going to find out what these following vocabulary words mean.
VOCAB LIST
Hyunwoo: 미현씨, 첫 번째 단어는 뭐예요?
Mihyeon: 혼자
Junsu: 혼자
Mihyeon: 혼자 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 혼자 [natural native speed]
Junsu: And what does this word mean?
Mihyeon: 다른 사람이 없고 나만 있을 때 이 단어를 사용합니다.
Junsu: It’s used when there is no one else around and you are by yourself. So it means to be alone.
Hyunwoo: 네. 미현씨는 혼자 있는 게 좋아요 다른 사람이랑 같이 있는 게 좋아요?
Mihyeon: 당연히 다른 사람이랑 같이 있는 게 좋죠.
Hyunwoo: Well I like to be alone sometimes.
Junsu: Especially sometimes when it’s late at night and I listen to music really loud and I like being by myself.
Mihyeon: 그럼 현우씨는 언제 혼자 있고 싶어요?
Hyunwoo: 아 그냥 어...생각하고 싶을 때 아니면 지쳤을 때. 피곤할 때 다른 사람하고 같이 있으면 I don’t know what to say like I don’t know what I should act like 그럴 때 지쳤을 때는 혼자 있고 싶죠. 미현씨도 그렇지 않아요?
Mihyeon: 음 그렇지만 저는 계속 혼자 있는 건 싫고요. 다른 사람이랑 같이 어울려서 지내는 게 좋아요.
Hyunwoo: 저도 그래요. Yeah me too but here you are going to have to give me three example sentences using the lonely word 혼자.
Mihyeon: 준수야, 너 또 혼자 밥 먹어?
Junsu: I am the target again. Junsu, are you eating by yourself again?
Mihyeon: 지금은 혼자 있지만 내년에 꼭 결혼 할 거예요.
Hyunwoo: Oh okay I hope so.
Junsu: Good luck. I am alone now but next year I am going to get married.
Hyunwoo: 진짜 행운을 빕니다, 미현씨.
Mihyeon: 그냥 예문이에요. 다음 예문, 혼자 있고 싶어. 내버려 둬.
Junsu: I want to be by myself. Leave me alone.
Hyunwoo: Okay I will leave you alone. Junsu, what’s the next word?
Junsu: 아까
Hyunwoo: 아까
Junsu: 아까 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 아까 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: And what’s the meaning of this word Junsu?
Junsu: 조금 전에라는 뜻이에요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah it means just a while ago.
Mihyeon: 저도 좀 끼워 주세요. 둘이만 하지 말고.
Hyunwoo: 아까 혼자 있고 싶다고 하지 않았어요?
Mihyeon: 아...그런 말 한 적 없는데요?
Hyunwoo: 아 진짜요? 그러면 okay 같이 하세요. 그러면 미현씨가 예문 좀 들어 주세요.
Mihyeon: 현우야, 친구한테 아까 전화 왔었어.
Junsu: Hyunwoo, your friend just called a while ago.
Mihyeon: 아까 어디 갔었어?
Junsu: Where were you earlier?
Mihyeon: 음...아까 밥 먹으러 갔었어.
Junsu: Oh I was eating just a while ago.
Hyunwoo: Okay.
Mihyeon: 근데 발음이 좀 일본어 단어 같아요.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 일본어의 빨간색하고 비슷하죠?
Junsu: Oh I didn’t know that.
Mihyeon: 네. 저도 뜻은 몰랐는데 아까라는 발음이 왠지 일본어하고 비슷한 것 같았어요.
Hyunwoo: 예, 맞아요. 하지만 뜻은 전혀 다르네요. 그 다음 단어는 뭐죠, 미현씨?
Mihyeon: 찾다
Junsu: 찾다
Mihyeon: 찾다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 찾다 [natural native speed]
Junsu: And what does this word mean?
Mihyeon: 어디에 있는지 살펴보는 거예요.
Junsu: To seek or search for something because you don’t know where it is. So it means to look for.
Mihyeon: 뭐 찾으세요?
Junsu: What are you looking for?
Mihyeon: 저의 이상형을 찾고 있어요.
Junsu: I am looking for my dream man.
Mihyeon: 아무리 찾아도 찾을 수 없네요.
Junsu: No matter how hard I look for it, I cannot find it.
Hyunwoo: Yeah this is a very interesting sentence because in one sentence, we have two meanings of the verb 찾다.
Junsu: In the Korean language, 찾다 has two meanings which is to look for and to find.
Hyunwoo: Though unlike in English where you have to distinguish between the two verbs, to look for and to find, in Korean, you can just use the one word 찾다 for both meanings. So this could be handy but on the other hand, it could also be confusing sometimes. So be sure to look at the context to see what it really means. So for example, I can say 미현씨, 이상형 찾았어요? Did you find your dream man?
Mihyeon: 지금도 찾고 있어요.
Junsu: Yeah she is still looking for him.
Hyunwoo: 여러분, 이해하셨죠? I hope you understood and if you want to contact Mihyeon, her email address is…
Mihyeon: 빨리 이야기하세요.
Hyunwoo: Mi
Hyunwoo: Hy something, something, something. Okay if you want to really contact her, contact me first. Just kidding. 그 다음 단어는 뭐죠?
Mihyeon: 아무
Junsu: 아무
Mihyeon: 아무 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 아무 [natural native speed]
Junsu: 무슨 뜻이에요?
Mihyeon: 하아...이거는 설명하기 너무 어려워요. 그런데 부정문에서 많이 쓰이는데요. 사람일 때는 아무도 뭐뭐뭐, 물건일 때는 아무것도 뭐뭐뭐 이렇게 씁니다.
Junsu: Yeah the word is very hard to explain. It means any or no in English. So you use it when you want to say nothing, anything or no one, any one.
Hyunwoo: 네. 미현씨, 예를 좀 들어 주세요.
Mihyeon: 난 아무것도 몰라.
Junsu: I don’t know anything.
Hyunwoo: Yeah I know. 농담이고요. 그 다음 예문은요?
Mihyeon: 여기 아무도 없어요?
Junsu: Is there nobody here?
Mihyeon: 저 이번 휴가 때 아무 데도 안 가요. 집에 있을 거예요.
Junsu: I am not going anywhere this vacation. I am going to stay home.
Hyunwoo: Yeah that’s because you just came back from a trip. 방금 여행 갔다 오셨잖아요. You don’t need another trip so soon. 그럼 마지막 단어 소개해 주세요.
Mihyeon: 꼭
Hyunwoo: 네?
Mihyeon: 꽃 아니고요 꼭.
Hyunwoo: 네, 좀 구별하기 어렵지만 따라 해 보세요.
Mihyeon: 꼭
Junsu: 꼭
Hyunwoo: 네, 꼭. And what does this mean?
Mihyeon: 100퍼센트 해야만 할 때 하려고 할 때 이 단어를 사용해요.
Junsu: Yeah you use this word when you have to do something or you are planning to do something 100%. So it means for sure or definitely.
Mihyeon: 난 그 남자 꼭 꼬실거야.
Junsu: I am going to seduce that guy for sure.
Mihyeon: 꼭 꼬실거야.
Junsu: I am going to do it definitely.
Mihyeon: 음...현우씨, 내일 꼭 오실 거죠?
Junsu: Hyunwoo, you are definitely going to come tomorrow right?
Hyunwoo: 어디로요? What do you mean, where?
Mihyeon: 아, 맞다. 현우씨는 오면 안 되는데...
Junsu: Remember you told me not to invite him.
Hyunwoo: 뭐야 이 두 사람. 미현씨는 꼭 저를 놀리세요. Although you always try to tease me, I will still have to finish this lesson with you. So please introduce today’s grammar point.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: What’s today’s grammar point?
Junsu: 아까 말한 것 처럼. Like we mentioned earlier, today’s grammar point is used when you want to emphasize something like I did do it or I do like it and so on.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and if you look at the construction of this grammar pattern, fairly simple. You take the verb stem and add.
Mihyeon: 기는
Hyunwoo: At the end of the verb stem and you use the same verb again and then the second time the verb is used, it could be in the past tense, the future tense or in the plain form of the verb. So for example
Mihyeon: 알다
Junsu: To know.
Mihyeon: 알기는 알아요.
Junsu: I do know it.
Mihyeon: 착하다
Junsu: To be nice as in personality.
Mihyeon: 착하기는 착해요.
Junsu: He is nice.
Hyunwoo: But something, something is implied. He is nice but lazy. He is nice but what not. So how was it used in today’s dialogue?
Mihyeon: 네, 오늘 대화에서는 정호가 보기는 봤어라고 이야기했어요.
Junsu: In the dialogue, Jeongho says, I did see him.
Mihyeon: 네. 정호가 또 이야기했는데요. 보기는 봤는데, 아무 얘기도 안 했어라고 이야기했어요.
Junsu: And then he said, I did see him but he didn’t say anything to me.
Hyunwoo: 그럼 미현씨, 또 다른 예문을 들어 주시겠어요?
Mihyeon: 운동이 중요하다는 것을 알긴 아는데 실천을 안 해.
Junsu: I do know that exercising is important, but I just don’t do it.
Hyunwoo: Yeah I think we all have the same problem.
Mihyeon: 어제 만난 그 남자 멋있기는 멋있는데 머리가 빈 것 같아.
Junsu: The guy I met yesterday, he is handsome but I think his head is empty.
Hyunwoo: Which means not very smart right?
Junsu: Yeah.
Hyunwoo: 네. 미현씨, 마지막 예문 하나만 더 들어 주세요.
Mihyeon: 준수씨, 좀 도와주세요.
Junsu: Okay. 미현아, 그 소개팅 했어?
Hyunwoo: Mihyeon, did you go to that blind date?
Mihyeon: 응. 하긴 했는데 10분 만에 집에 갔어.
Hyunwoo: But I went home in 10 minutes.
Junsu: How terrible was he?
Mihyeon: 별로 마음에 들지 않았어요.
Hyunwoo: Or 미현씨는 그 남자가 마음에 들기는 들었는데 그 남자가 미현씨가 마음에 안 든 거 아니에요?
Mihyeon: 아니에요!

Outro

Hyunwoo: 네. Okay I think that’s going to do it for today. 오늘 배웠던 단어들, 오늘 배웠던 표현들. 여러분, 꼭 꼭 꼭 외우세요.
Mihyeon: 꼭이요.
Hyunwoo: 꼭이요. 꼭이요 is actually how chickens cry in Korea 꼬끼요.
Mihyeon: 아 그거 아니에요. 꼭이요.
Hyunwoo: 꼭이요.
Junsu: Yeah, make sure to review all the Korean that you learned today.
Mihyeon: 여러분, 이 레슨 듣고 나서는 아무 데도 가지 말고 다시 한 번 저희를 꼭 찾아 주세요.
Junsu: Yeah, so see you at the website.
Hyunwoo: Which is KoreanClass101.com. So we will see you there. 안녕히 계세요.
Mihyeon: 네, 안녕히 계세요.
