In today’s lesson, we will look at talking about your likes and dislikes. In Korean, I like this is 이거 좋아해요 (igeo joahaeyo). One time slowly, 이거 좋아해요 (joahaeyo). And now by syllable, 이-거 좋-아-해-요 (i-geo jo-a-hae-yo). The first word 이거 (igeo) means this. Let’s break this word down, 이-거 (i-geo). This is followed by 좋아해요 (joahaeyo) which in Korean is like. 좋아해요 (joahaeyo). Literally, this means this like, I is inferred. Now, we can substitute any word for the word this, for example, 갈비 (galbi). It’s a popular dish in Korea. To say, I like galbi, it’s 갈비 좋아해요 (galbi joahaeyo). And now by syllable, 갈-비 좋-아-해-요 (gal-bi jo-a-hae-yo). So notice how the only thing that changes is the noun in front.

Now, let’s take a look at the other end of this spectrum. In Korean, I dislike this is 이거 싫어해요 (igeo sireohaeyo). One time slowly, 이거 싫어해요 (igeo sireohaeyo). And now by syllable, 이-거 싫-어-해-요 (i-geo si-reo-hae-yo). The first word 이거 (igeo) once again means this. Let’s do it once again by syllable, 이-거 (i-geo). This is followed by 싫어해요 (sireohaeyo) which in Korean is dislike. 싫어해요 (sireohaeyo). Literally this means, this dislike, translated into English, it’s I dislike this. Now, if you’ve ever come across 갈비 (galbi), you know that it’s one of the most delicious tender savory meat dishes out there. It’s Korean style barbeque but you may have to do some of the barbecuing yourself. This is because of the way it’s typically eaten in Korea or even in Korean restaurants in other countries.

Typically you sit with a grill in front of you usually built into the table. The marinated meat is brought out raw. When the grill is hot, the barbeque begins. The staff may do some of the grilling for you but it isn’t unusual for the customers to do their own grilling. Most of the time, the staff will help as much as they can but if it’s too busy, don’t just sit there and watch that precious meat burn. Turn it, flip it, eat it, take the initiative.
