INTRODUCTION
Seol: 오빠, 저 설이에요. 오빠, 너무 미안해요. 나 새로운 사람이 생겼어요. 더 이상 오빠 옆에 있을 수 없어요. 저를 용서하세요.
Hyunwoo: 잠깐, 잠깐, 잠깐 뭐야 그게 누군데?
Seol: KoreanClass101이에요. 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다.
Keith: Keith here. Idioms and Phrases, Lesson #6 Scary Teacher, Scary Class. Today, we got a pretty good phrase for you and it’s a lot of fun actually.
Seol: 장난 아닌데?
Keith: It’s kind of slangish, somewhat.
Seol: Yeah but I always use this, so I wouldn’t say this is a slang.
Keith: Yeah but you wouldn’t see your professor using it, would you?
Seol: No. Okay this is a slang and be careful.
Keith: Yeah I think most of our idioms and phrases, some of them are slang words. So you got to be kind of careful who you use these phrases with but they are a lot of fun and they are actually like you said, very useful. You use it every day.
Seol: I use this every day. I really use this every day.
Keith: We are not going to get into the meaning just yet, but we are going to get into the conversation. So what are we talking about?
Seol: It’s a math class and students have problems understanding the teacher.
Keith: Yeah and actually this is a pretty cute conversation. It’s pretty cute.
Seol: Yeah this is cute.
Keith: I think it’s maybe a second grade class, first grade even.
Seol: Second grade I guess.
Keith: Second grade yeah, something like that. So it’s probably 초등학교죠?
Seol: 네.
Keith: Yeah probably elementary school. So before we get into the conversation, we have three characters in our dialogue. First we have
Seol: 선생님.
Keith: The teacher and actually real quick cultural note. You never call your teacher Mr. Kim or Mr. Park.
Seol: No you have to call him or her 선생님.
Keith: Yeah just the word teacher and actually it could get a little confusing because let’s say, the teachers are all gathered in one area and then you say 선생님, everybody turns around.
Seol: Yeah. You have to be really careful. You just go right to him and 톡톡, 선생님.
Keith: You got to tap him on – not as efficient as calling somebody’s name.
Seol: No.
Keith: Yeah but those are the rules. So we have two students and they are really cute. So the teacher is talking to the class using
Seol: 존댓말.
Keith: Polite language and the two friends are talking to each other using
Seol: 반말.
Keith: Casual language and what’s our grammar point?
Seol: 줄 알아요.
Keith: Know how to do
Seol: 줄 몰라요.
Keith: Don’t know how to do. So we are going to get into this in a little bit but it comes out a couple of times in our conversation and what else comes up? Our phrase of the day.
Seol: 장난 아니다.
Keith: You sound a little scared.
Seol: 장난 아닌데?
Keith: What kind of feelings are there behind this phrase?
Seol: Oh I am so scared.
Keith: Scared or
Seol: Oh this is too much.
Keith: Yeah well, we don’t want to give away too much right now so…
Seol: Okay.
Keith: Why don’t we listen in to the conversation?
Seol: 들어 봐요.

Keith: Aww they are so cute.
Seol: 귀엽다, 그렇죠?
Keith: Yeah multiplication, division…
Seol: Can you – do you know how to multiply?
Keith: Come on now!
Seol: Really okay.
Keith: Actually I am not that good on multiplication.
Seol: I guess so.
Keith: I used to be good but I stopped doing math for a long time. Actually the last time I took math was in high school.
Seol: Okay so….
Keith: And it’s not pretty right now.
Seol: Okay.
Keith: If you threw out a math problem to me right now, I think I probably won’t get it.
Seol: 진짜?
Keith: Yeah.
Seol: 장난 아니다.
Keith: Oh…And that’s our phrase again. So before we get into our phrase, why don’t we talk about our vocabulary?
VOCAB LIST
Keith: What’s the first word we have?
Seol: 여러분.
Keith: Everybody, everyone.

Keith: Yeah we address everybody, we say 여러분 everybody and then we usually pose a question like 곱하기 할 줄 알아요? Do you know how to do multiplication and actually that’s the next word.
Seol: 곱하기.
Keith: Multiplication.
Seol: 곱하기 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 곱하기 [natural native speed]
Keith: And what I like about this word is the pronunciation. I love it when the 곱하기.
Seol: You like this 파 sound?
Keith: Yeah but it’s not actually written that way.
Seol: No.
Keith: So how is it written?
Seol: 곱하기.
Keith: Yeah but if you try to say pretty quickly.
Seol: It’s just 곱하기 고파기 고파기.
Keith: Yeah 고파기. It’s kind of natural pronunciation change. All right so what’s our next word?
Seol: 나누기.
Keith: Division.
Seol: A friend of 곱하기, right?
Keith: Ah I don’t know about that one.
Seol: 나누기 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 나누기 [natural native speed]
Keith: Is it your friend? Do you like math?
Seol: No I really hate it but at least I know how to 곱하기 and 나누기.
Keith: I am not saying I don’t know how to do it, I am bad at it.
Seol: Okay.
Keith: But what I find interesting about this word is that it comes from the verb
Seol: 나누다.
Keith: To divide and it’s also used in the context of to share.
Seol: Right.
Keith: And these two words, where would you most likely hear these two words?
Seol: At the math class.
Keith: Yeah and that’s our next word.
Seol: 수업.
Keith: Class.
Seol: 수업 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 수업 [natural native speed]
Keith: And really quickly, what’s math?
Seol: 수학.
Keith: So what would be math class?
Seol: 수학 수업.
Keith: Pretty simple okay and 수업 can we also say class?
Seol: 클래스.
Keith: And what’s the difference?
Seol: The same.
Keith: Yeah pretty much.
Seol: 네.
Keith: What about in university when you have a lecture.
Seol: 강의.
Keith: And you can also say 수업 as well.
Seol: Sure.
Keith: So 수업 is a general class and 강의 is a lecture.
Seol: 네.
Keith: All right. What’s our next word?
Seol: 장난.
Keith: A joke.
Seol: 장난 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 장난 [natural native speed]
Keith: And this is part of our phrase
Seol: 장난 아니다.
Keith: It has something to do with a joke but I don’t think it actually is a joke. All right well what’s our next word. Let’s move on.
Seol: 어렵다.
Keith: To be difficult, to be hard.
Seol: 어렵다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 어렵다 [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: And can we have a couple of examples?
Seol: 오, 이 수학 문제 어렵다.
Keith: Oh this math problem is hard, it is difficult.
Seol: 오, 저 사람 어렵다.
Keith: Oh that person is difficult.
Seol: Yeah. There are a lot of difficult people right?
Keith: Did you just talk with someone before coming to this recording?
Seol: 아니에요. And 오늘의 표현은 어렵다.
Keith: And today’s phrase is difficult. Actually I don’t think so.
Seol: No I don’t think so either.

Seol: The real meaning of 장난 아니다.
Keith: All right. Let’s move on to our last word.
Seol: 무섭다.
Keith: To be scary, to be frightening.
Seol: 무섭다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 무섭다 [natural native speed]
Keith: And both of these words 어렵다 and 무섭다 they are both irregular verbs because of what?
Seol: ㅂ the last consonant before 다.
Keith: Yeah and these have an irregular conjugation but if you check out this PDF, we will have that explanation in there just for you but the verb 무섭다 it’s describing something. So something is scary.
Seol: 어우, 저 사람 무섭다.
Keith: That person is scary and how about in this conversation.
Seol: 어우, 선생님 너무 무서워.
Keith: The teacher is so scary. So real quick before we move on to the grammar, what are you scared of?
Seol: 무서운 영화 무서워요.
Keith: The scary movies are scary. They are meant to be scary.
Seol: 네. 그래서 무서워요.
Keith: 다른 거는요? Are you afraid of the dark or…
Seol: No, I am afraid of my father. 아빠가 무서워요.
Keith: He is supposed to love you. He is not supposed to be scary. Actually sometimes Korean men…
Seol: 가끔 무서워요.
Keith: Yeah. All right, so let’s move on to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Keith: All right, what are we talking about?
Seol: 줄 알다. 줄 모르다.
Keith: Know how to do or don’t know how to do. So this grammatical construction expresses your knowledge of the ability to perform something or to do something. So long story short, I know how to do something, I don’t know how to do something. So 오늘의 대화에는 어떻게 나왔죠?
Seol: 여러분 곱하기 할 줄 몰라요?
Keith: Do you not know how to do multiplication? Can we break that down?
Seol: 곱하기.
Keith: Multiplication.
Seol: 할
Keith: Do.
Seol: 줄 몰라요?
Keith: Not know. You don’t know how to do multiplication? So let’s have a couple of sample sentences.
Seol: 프랑스어 할 줄 몰라요?
Keith: Do you not know how to speak French?
Seol: 몰라요?
Keith: 몰라요.
Seol: Keith 바보.
Keith: But I do know how to do division.
Seol: 나누기 할 줄 알아요? 대단하다.
Keith: 저 장난 아니에요.
Seol: Okay let’s break down the sentence. 나누기.
Keith: Division
Seol: 할
Keith: Do
Seol: 줄 알아요?
Keith: Know, do you know how to do division? So what’s do you not know how to do division?
Seol: 나누기 할 줄 몰라요?
Keith: But in this question, it’s do you know how to do division.
Seol: 나누기 할 줄 알아요?
Keith: So this grammatical structure, what do we have?
Seol: 줄 알다.
Keith: And this one is using the verb 알다 to know. What about the other one?
Seol: 줄 모르다.
Keith: To not know. So when you ask questions, you know how to do or you don’t know how to do. Now the difference between the two is that when you expect someone to know something, you use
Seol: 할 줄 몰라요?
Keith: But if you just want to know, if it’s just a general question, do you know how to do something?
Seol: 할 줄 알아요?
Keith: Now so if you want to say, oh I know how to do math.
Seol: 나 수학 할 줄 알아요.
Keith: Oh I know how to do multiplication.
Seol: 나 곱하기 할 줄 알아요.
Keith: I think that’s something you would do in class like everyone is like oh 이 선생님 장난 아닌데 this teacher.
Seol: But I am the only person who is raising hands and yeay! Teacher, I can do that, I can do that!
Keith: Yeah I feel like you would do that.
Seol: Yeah. 맞아요.
Keith: All right so yeah 설은 장난 아니에요.
Seol: 맞아요. 저 장난 아니에요.
