Lesson Transcript

In today’s lesson, we will introduce you to phrases you will hear when you are getting directions. Previously, we introduced, is there a bathroom around here and where is there a convenience store but while we can now ask, how about an answer. Today, we are going to work on understanding what is said. So today, we will go over basic directions. In Korean, there are several different ways to tell someone to go straight, turn left, turn right, it’s on the right, it’s on the left but for practical purposes, we will give you the words that are the most useful. In my experience, these are the words that I have come across time and time again when giving or receiving directions.
If you move on to our beginner lessons, we will definitely make clarifications. All right, first we have go straight. In Korean, go straight is 쭉 가세요 (jjuk gaseyo). One time slowly, 쭉 가세요 (jjuk gaseyo). And now by syllable, 쭉 가-세-요 (jjuk ga-se-yo). The first word 쭉 (jjuk) means straight. One time slowly, it’s 쭉 (jjuk). This is followed by 가세요 (gaseyo) which in English is go in a respectful manner. Let’s listen to it again. 가세요 (gaseyo). Altogether, we have 쭉 가세요 (jjuk gaseyo) which literally means straight go and of course, we translate this to mean go straight. Now, we are going to work on turning. Let’s try turning right.
In Korean, turn right is 오른쪽으로 가세요 (oreunjjogeuro gaseyo). One time slowly,오른쪽으로 가세요 (oreunjjogeuro gaseyo). And now by syllable, 오-른-쪽-으-로 가-세-요 (o-reun-jjo-geu-ro ga-se-yo). The first word 오른쪽 (oreunjjok) literally means right side. This is followed by 으로 (euro), a particle which means to. So these two are spoken together. We have 오른쪽으로 (oreunjjogeuro) which means to the right side. One time by syllable, it’s 오-른-쪽-으-로 (o-reun-jjo-geu-ro). Next we have 가세요 (gaseyo) which once again means go in a respectful manner. One more time by syllable, 가-세-요 (ga-se-yo). So altogether we have 오른쪽으로 가세요 (oreunjjogeuro gaseyo). literally this phrase means to the right side go or go to the right side but this is also understood as take a right or turn right. Once again, we are being practical here. Now, to turn left or to go left. In Korean, turn left is 왼쪽으로 가세요 (oenjjogeuro gaseyo). This phrase is exactly the same as the phrase we just went over. The only difference is, we changed right to left. In Korean, right is 오른 (oreun), left is 왼 (oen).
Let’s listen to them side by side. Right 오른 (oreun), left 왼 (oen). 오른 (oreun), 왼 (oen). So the phrase we have here is 왼쪽으로 가세요 (oenjjogeuro gaseyo). One time slowly, it’s 왼쪽으로 가세요 (oenjjogeuro gaseyo). And now by syllable, 왼-쪽-으-로 가-세-요 (oen-jjo-geu-ro ga-se-yo). Now to find out which side of the street it’s on. In Korean, it’s on the right is 오른쪽에 있어요 (oreunjjoge isseoyo). One time slowly, 오른쪽에 있어요 (oreunjjoge isseoyo). And now by syllable, 오-른-쪽-에 있-어-요 (o-reun-jjo-ge i-sseo-yo). The first part 오른쪽에 (oreunjjoge) means on the right. 오른쪽 (oreunjjok) means right side and 에 (e) a particle which is roughly equivalent to at, in or on depending on the situation. Let’s break it down in here one more time. 오른쪽에 (oreunjjoge). This is followed by 있어요 (isseoyo) which in Korean means to be, to exist or to have. One more time, it’s 있어요 (isseoyo). Altogether we have 오른쪽에 있어요 (oreunjjoge isseoyo) which literally means right at there is or translated, it’s on the right.
Lastly, let’s do it’s on the left. If you remember the word for left, it’s 왼 (oen). So, we just take the phrase we learned just before and replace 오른 (oreun) with 왼 (oen). This phrase is, 왼쪽에 있어요 (oenjjoge isseoyo). One time slowly, 왼쪽에 있어요 (oenjjoge isseoyo). And now by syllable, 왼-쪽-에 있-어-요 (oen-jjo-ge i-sseo-yo).
Okay. To close our today’s lesson, we’d like for you to practice what you’ve learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So 화이팅 (hwaiting)!
Go straight - 쭉 가세요 (jjuk gaseyo).
Go to the right - 오른쪽으로 가세요 (oreunjjogeuro gaseyo).
Go to the left - 왼쪽으로 가세요 (oenjjogeuro gaseyo).
It’s on the right - 오른쪽에 있어요 (oreunjjoge isseoyo).
it’s on the left - 왼쪽에 있어요 (oenjjoge isseoyo).
All right, that’s going to do it for today.
