Hyunwoo: How are you?
Miseon: I am good. 아주 좋아요.
Hyunwoo: 네. It’s good to know. What are we going to learn in this lesson?
Miseon: In this lesson, we learn how to say that you might do something or there is a possibility that something might happen.
Hyunwoo: Yes we learned one structure to do this in the previous lesson and we are going to learn another one, an equally useful one in this lesson. So this conversation takes place
Miseon: In a company.
Hyunwoo: And the conversation is between
Miseon: Miseon, ooh, 저예요 and her manager.
Hyunwoo: 부장님
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: And the speakers are speaking.
Miseon: Polite language 존댓말이요.
Hyunwoo: To each other.
Miseon: 네. By the way 근데 저는 매니저 아니에요.
Hyunwoo: You are not.
Miseon: Okay move on.
Hyunwoo: You want to play the role of the manager?
Miseon: 네, 그럼요.
Hyunwoo: Maybe why don’t we make you a president of the company? 사장님.
Miseon: Uhh that’s great.
Hyunwoo: But for now, let’s go on with this dialogue.
Miseon: All right.
Hyunwoo: Okay. Basic and premium members, if you have a 3G phone.
Miseon: You can see the lesson notes in your favorite browser on your phone.
Hyunwoo: So stop by Koreanclass101.com to find out more and for now, let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
bujang: miseon ssi, jari-e isseoyo?
Miseon: ne, bujangnim.
bujang: oneul sajangnim-hago hoe-ui-ga isseul su-do isseoyo.
Miseon: a, gihoek hoe-ui-ingayo? geureomyeon hoe-ui junbihagesseumnida.
bujang: geureonde oneul-eun gihoek hoe-ui-ga anil su-do isseoyo.
Miseon: a, geuraeyo? geureomyeon museun hoe-ui-ingayo?
bujang: oneul sajangnim-i... miseon ssi-hante haeoe geunmu-reul jeanhasil su-do isseoyo.
Miseon: hae-oe geunmu-yo?
bujang: ne. joeun gihoe-inde, i-nyeon-ina sam-nyeon isseoya doel su-do isseoyo.
Miseon: eodi-ro ganeun geo-yeyo?
bujang: ilbon-iyo.
Miseon: jeo-neun ilbon-eo-reul mot haeseo...
bujang: miseon ssi-ga an gamyeon, nae-ga gal su-do isseoyo. geureonikka miseon ssi-ga...
Manager: Miseon, are you there?
Miseon: Yes, sir.
Manager: Today, we might have a meeting with the president.
Miseon: Oh, is it a planning meeting? Then I will prepare for the meeting.
Manager: But today it might not be a planning meeting.
Miseon: Oh really? Then what kind of meeting is it?
Manager: Today the president might...suggest that you work abroad.
Miseon: Work abroad?
Manager: Yeah. It's a good opportunity, but you might have to stay there for two or three years.
Miseon: Where am I going?
Manager: Japan.
Miseon: But since I don't speak Japanese...
Manager: If you don't go, Miseon, I might go...so I hope you will...
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Miseon: I can’t go! I can’t speak Japanese.
Hyunwoo: Don’t worry, it wasn’t you. Someone by the same wonderful name.
Miseon: Right.
Hyunwoo: So the manager didn’t want to go anywhere far away. So he wanted her to go.
Miseon: 예. But I think it will be good for the company too if she goes.
Hyunwoo: How come?
Miseon: Because if they send a manager who is probably married or has kids, it will cost much more money right?
Hyunwoo: Well that’s true and I think that’s what‘s actually happening in many companies too.
Miseon: 네. And when I talk about something that might or might not happen like in this dialogue, I try to keep it to myself until the very last moment.
Hyunwoo: Oh you do?
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: Why?
Miseon: Because even if I say I might be going to Europe, people think, oh you are going to Europe?
Hyunwoo: That’s true. It’s easy to jump to conclusions right?
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: But still we don’t want our listeners to make people jump to conclusions. So we are going to learn how to say it could happen or I might do something.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: And now let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. 첫 번째 단어는?
Miseon: 자리
Hyunwoo: Seat, position.
Miseon: 자리 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 자리 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 자리 is basically a place that someone possesses or the space that someone takes up.
Miseon: So it could have many meanings like chair, seat or position in a group.
Hyunwoo: Yeah for example, if you say 높은 자리?
Miseon: That’s a high position and if you say that someone is 자리에 없다?
Hyunwoo: That means that the person is not in the office or at his desk. Okay what is the next word?
Miseon: 그러니까
Hyunwoo: So, therefore.
Miseon: 그러니까 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 그러니까 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: And the meaning of this word is very straightforward but the way that people pronounce this word is interesting.
Miseon: 네. Or maybe we should say the way people don’t pronounce this word
Hyunwoo: That’s true because often times you will only hear people say 까 instead of 그러니까.
Miseon: 네. Sometimes people say 그니까 or 긴까 very often. You will only hear 까.
Hyunwoo: It’s like this sound that people make trying to say this word 그러니까 but as they are just opening their mouth, the only sound that is made is 까 without the 그러니 part.
Miseon: 네. It’s like a 그러니까, 그니까, 긴까, 까, right?
Hyunwoo: Right 까 and that means so or therefore.
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: Okay awesome. 까 now let’s look at the grammar point of this lesson.
Miseon: Okay.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: What is the grammar point of this lesson?
Miseon: Today’s grammar point of this lesson is how to say might or there is a possibility.
Hyunwoo: As in the example
Miseon: 회의가 있을 수도 있어요.
Hyunwoo: There might be a meeting.
Miseon: When you want to say that you might do something or that there is a possibility that something could happen, you can use this sentence ending (으)ㄹ 수도 있다.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and this is basically a form where 도 which means also has been added to (으)ㄹ 수 있다 which means to be able to or can.
Miseon: So together (으)ㄹ 수도 있다 literally means it is also possible that blah, blah or also it could happen that blah, blah. And it is more naturally translated into English as could or might.
Hyunwoo: Exactly. So you add (으)ㄹ 수도 있다 after the verb stem. 미선씨 Can you give us an example?
Miseon: 좋아요. For example, 가다 is to go, right? And it becomes 가 plus (으)ㄹ 수도 있다 it became 갈 수도 있다.
Hyunwoo: For example
Miseon: 혼자 갈 수도 있어요.
Hyunwoo: I might go alone. While this can be misunderstood and translated as I can also go alone but this is most commonly understood as I might go alone.
Miseon: Yeah it’s more like a possibility that the speakers imply, right?
Hyunwoo: Right.
Miseon: Yeah.
Hyunwoo: Okay so how was this structure used in the dialogue for this lesson?
Miseon: Okay. 오늘 사장님하고 회의가 있을 수도 있어요.
Hyunwoo: Today we might have a meeting with the president.
Miseon: 그런데 오늘은 기획 회의가 아닐 수도 있어요.
Hyunwoo: But today it might not be a planning meeting.
Miseon: 오늘 사장님이 미선 씨한테 해외 근무를 제안하실 수도 있어요.
Hyunwoo: Today the president might suggest that you work abroad.
Miseon: 2년이나 3년 있어야 될 수도 있어요.
Hyunwoo: You might have to stay there for 2 or 3 years.
Miseon: 내가 갈 수도 있어요.
Hyunwoo: I might go. So now before we finish, let’s have a look at a few more sample sentences.
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: So how do you say it might rain tomorrow?
Miseon: 내일 비가 올 수도 있어요.
Hyunwoo: Please don’t. I hope not and we might not be able to meet this weekend.
Miseon: 주말에 못 만날 수도 있어요.
Hyunwoo: And how do you say it?
Miseon: It’s great.
Hyunwoo: That’s what I wanted to say.
Miseon: Uh-oh 현우씨
Hyunwoo: We need some talk.
Miseon: Right.
Hyunwoo: Okay how do you say, this might be better.
Miseon: 이게 더 좋을 수도 있어요.
Hyunwoo: About my idea might be wrong.
Miseon: 제 생각이 틀릴 수도 있어요.
