INTRODUCTION
Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다.
Hyunwoo: 안녕하세요. 선현우입니다.
Keith: Hi I am Keith. Who Do You Know? Who Do You Know? 누구 알아요? Do you know any famous people?
Seol: No.
Keith: Have you ever met any famous people?
Hyunwoo: 연예인 중에서?
Keith: 한국 연예인이나 아니면 you know American..
Hyunwoo: 외국 연예인은 본 적 없는데 한국 연예인은 학교에서 많이 봤어요.
Keith: 학교에서요?
Hyunwoo: 네, 학교에 다닐 때 같은 학교에 다니는 연예인들.
Keith: 아 연예인도 학교 다녀요?
Hyunwoo: Umm officially.
Keith: Officially.
Hyunwoo: 그리고 학교에 가끔씩 와요.
Seol: 어 갑자기 생각났는데
Hyunwoo: 네
Seol: My favorite singer is 성시경.
Hyunwoo: 아 예. 학교에서 많이 봤어요.
Keith: 성시경 is like a ballard guy right?
Seol: Yeah, yeah.
Hyunwoo: The prince of ballard. Everybody loves him and his songs. 그리고 노래 정말 잘 부르는 것 같아요.
Keith: So he goes to your school.
Hyunwoo: 지금은 안 다니는데 예전에 다녔었어요. And he is older than me but he was a 후배. 왜냐면 학교를 늦게 들어갔거든요.
Keith: Umm too busy making that money.
Hyunwoo: Maybe.
Keith: Okay so what’s going on in today’s conversation. Is 지혜 asking 소연 if she knows anybody famous?
Hyunwoo: 아니요. 컴퓨터를 잘 아는 사람.
Keith: Someone that knows computers.
Hyunwoo: 네, Keith처럼.
Keith: No.
Hyunwoo: 윤설처럼.
Seol: 아닌데요.
Hyunwoo: 그러면 누구를 찾아야 되죠?
Seol: Umm…
Keith: 성시경. This guy is a genius I heard.
Hyunwoo: Yeah he is good at singing and he speaks many languages too.
Seol: He is really smart. 성시경 너무 좋아요. 하지만 우리는 지금 한국어를 공부해야 하지 않겠어요?
Keith: Yes got to study Korean. One of the really good ways to study Korean is listen to music, watch movies and listen to our dialogue.
Seol: 들어 봐요.
DIALOGUE
Seol: 이번에는 영어로
(1)지혜: 소연아~ 안녕?
Keith: Hi Soyeon!
(2)소연: 어, 지혜야! 안녕! 아, 너 토익 시험 잘 봤어?
Keith: Hi Jihye. Oh, did you do well on the TOEIC?
(3)지혜: 음... 아니. 다음 달에 다시 볼 거야!
Keith: Hmm... Not really. I'm going to take it again next month.
(4)소연: 또? 달마다 보는 거야? 두 달에 한 번씩 보는 건 어때?
Keith: Again? Are you taking it monthly? How about taking it every two months?
(5)지혜: 안 돼!! 다음 달에는 꼭 900점 넘을 거야!
Keith: No! I’ll get over 900 points for sure next month!
(6)소연: 그래. 열심히 해... 언젠가는 되겠지.
Keith: Alright. Keep at it. You'll get there someday.
(7)지혜: 야, 소연아, 근데, 너 혹시 컴퓨터 잘 알아?
Keith: By the way, Soyeon, do you happen to know a lot about computers?
(8)소연: 컴퓨터? 왜?
Keith: Computers? Why?
(9)지혜: 아... 나 노트북 사려고 하는데, 뭐가 좋은지 모르겠어.
Keith: Oh... I'm going to buy a laptop, but I don't know what's good.
(10)소연: 나는 컴퓨터 잘 몰라.
Keith: I don't know much about computers.
(11)지혜: 친구 중에 컴퓨터 잘 아는 사람 없어?
Keith: Do you have anybody among your friends who know much about computers?
(12)소연: 음... 글쎄...?
Keith: Hmm.... well....
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Keith: Okay 어땠어요?
Hyunwoo: It’s so difficult to choose a laptop these days. 좋은 게 너무 많아요.
Keith: 그런가요?
Hyunwoo: 네, 용산에 가면 이것도 사고 싶고 저것도 사고 싶고. You have a limited budget and you have a limitless option of computers 그래서 너무 힘들어요.
Keith: Well okay she is going to buy a computer 아마도 어디 가죠?
Seol: 용산이요.
Keith: And that’s a mountain, is it? 용산.
Seol: 그러네요. 그렇지만 여기서 용산은 지역 이름이에요.
Keith: It’s a name of an area.
Hyunwoo: 네. It’s not Dragon mountain.
Seol: 서울역 옆에 용산역이라고 있죠? 그 곳이 컴퓨터 중심지예요.
Keith: A cluster for not just computers, electronics in general.
Hyunwoo: 네, 아무거나 다 살 수 있어요. 용산에 가면 IT관련 쇼핑은 할 수 있어요.
Keith: Can you get discounts there?
Hyunwoo: 네.
Seol: 말만 잘 하면 깎아 주세요.
Keith: Or 귀엽게 하면. 아저씨...
Seol: 아저씨, 조금만 깎아 주세요. 학생이라 돈 없어요. And this works.
Keith: I see you’ve tried it before.
Seol: Yeah I did.
Hyunwoo: 그리고 trying to sound smart and look smart about computers is also helpful. 왜냐면 아무것도 모르면 그냥 비싼 가격에 팔고 잘 아는 사람들한테는 더 싸게 팔거든요.
Keith: Well if you want a discount just really quick, how do we ask for a discount?
Seol: 싸게 해 주세요.
Keith: Please make it cheaper.
Seol: 깎아 주세요.
Keith: Or cut off some of the price I guess. Give me a discount pretty much. If you wanted to add a little 애교 to it like a little cuteness, what do you do?
Seol: 오빠, 깎아 주세요.
Keith: 좋아.
Seol: You have to be really careful when you call somebody by 오빠 or 아저씨. 왜냐면 아저씨라고 불렸을 때 기분 나쁠 수도 있거든요.
Hyunwoo: If you are a girl, calling them 오빠 is a good way to do it.
Seol: 맞아요. 오빠라고 부르세요. 그럼 깎아 줄 거예요.
Hyunwoo: 그러면 저는 어떻게 해요?
Keith: Yeah 남자들은 어떻게 해요. What do men do?
Seol: 잘생긴 형, 깎아 주세요. 이러면 안 될까요?
Hyunwoo: I don’t think that will work.
Seol: Okay.
Keith: So what works for you?
Hyunwoo: 저는 어 다른데 보고 올게요.
Keith: Yeah threatening to take your business somewhere else. That’s always a good tactic.
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. 그리고 30분 뒤에 다시 가면 깎아 줘요.
Keith: Umm.
Hyunwoo: That always works for me.
Keith: All right. Let’s move on to today’s vocabulary.
VOCAB LIST
Keith: What do we have first?
Seol: 달마다
Keith: Monthly, every month.
Seol: 달마다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 달마다 [natural native speed]

Seol: 글쎄 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 글쎄 [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: Okay. Any takers, anybody want to take a stab at a vocabulary word?
Hyunwoo: Yeah I want to talk about 넘다.
Keith: Yeah me too.
Hyunwoo: It’s a very useful word.
Keith: It means to get over, to go over but it’s used in a lot of different contexts.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 여기서는 점수에 대해서 이야기하고 있죠.
Seol: 900점을 넘다.
Keith: Get over 900.
Hyunwoo: 그런데 넘다는 점수뿐만이 아니라 나이, 돈, 시간 여러가지로 쓸 수 있어요.
Keith: Physical things like mountains and
Hyunwoo: 언덕
Keith: Hills
Hyunwoo: 펜스를 넘다.
Keith: Fence. Go over physically.
Hyunwoo: 네.
Keith: And we can also use it for intangible things as well.
Hyunwoo: 네, 나이가 서른 살을 넘다.
Keith: To go over thirty and actually we kind of have the same expression in English you know. You are over the hill.
Hyunwoo: Over the hill?
Keith: Too old.
Keith: 서른 살?
Keith: 서른 살 or umm I don’t know. 40, 50 잘 모르겠어요.
Hyunwoo: 그런데 나이가 좀 많으면 over the hill 이라고 해요?
Keith: Yeah it’s kind of a negative thing.
Seol: 오빠는 서른 넘었어요?
Hyunwoo: 아니요. 아직 over the hill 아니에요. 아직 서른 넘지 않았어요.
Seol: Keith는 서른 넘었어요?
Keith: 서른 아직 안 넘었어요. Not yet.
Seol: 다들 어리네요.
Keith: But it’s not necessarily a negative connotation. It’s just a neutral, have you gone over 30?
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요.
Keith: But in English, you got to be a little careful. It has a negative connotation.
Seol: 조심할게요.
Keith: Okay I guess we are teaching English now. Okay so you might hear this word a lot in our podcasts as well because a lot of times one of us will make a bad joke and we just say 넘어갑시다. Let’s get over it, let’s move on.
Hyunwoo: Yeah let’s pass.
Keith: Yeah so it’s like this thing that you have to get over, get past and in our case, it’s a bad joke. In this case, it’s a test score.
Hyunwoo: And we were talking about 나이.
Keith: Getting over a certain age.
Hyunwoo: 그리고 시간 그리고 제가 설이랑 만날 약속을 했어요. She was supposed to turn up at 2 그런데 지금 2시 반인데 안 왔으면 2시가 넘었는데 왜 안 오지? 이렇게 말할 수 있어요.
Keith: It went past 2 o’ clock.
Hyunwoo: 네, 그렇게 말할 수 있어요.
Keith: Okay so 우리 다음 단어로 넘어갑시다.
Hyunwoo: Ohh…
Seol: 다음 단어는 중에 공부해 보고 싶어요.
Keith: Okay so this is among...
Hyunwoo: 그런데 재미있는 것은 이 중 중이 무슨 뜻이죠?
Keith: In the middle.
Hyunwoo: Yeah it’s the middle.
Keith: Center.
Hyunwoo: Center. Pdf에 보시면 한자를 볼 수 있어요. 이 한자를 어떻게 쓰는지.
Keith: Yeah actually this is an extremely commonly used word with a hanja vocabulary behind it.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 예를 들어서 중학교
Keith: Middle school.
Hyunwoo: 중앙
Keith: Center.
Hyunwoo: 한국에는 중앙 대학교라는 대학교도 있죠?
Keith: Center University.
Hyunwoo: Yeah.
Keith: 처음 들어 봤어요. Where is that? Is it in the center of Korea?
Hyunwoo: 아니요.
Keith: So what’s so central about it?
Hyunwoo: It’s a symbol.
Keith: Okay. And here it’s a particle which expresses at or in. So if we translate it literally, it’s middle in. If we take a look at an example, it’s a lot easier to see. So let’s go into today’s conversation.
Seol: 친구 중에 컴퓨터 잘 아는 사람 없어?
Keith: What’s that first part?
Seol: 친구
Keith: Friend.
Seol: 중에
Keith: Middle at. So middle at among your friends. Don’t really got to break down the grammar among.
Hyunwoo: 우리들 중에
Keith: Among us.
Seol: 가족 중에
Keith: Among family. Okay so let’s have a couple of sample sentences.
Hyunwoo: 이 중에서 뭐가 제일 맛있어요?
Keith: What’s the most delicious among these?
Hyunwoo: 네
Seol: 친구들 중에 누가 제일 예뻐요?
Keith: Who is the prettiest among your friends? So remember to stop by KoreanClass101.com. We got a question for you. 호스트들 중에 누굴 제일 좋아해요?
Hyunwoo: 당연한 거 아니에요?
Seol: 이런 질문 너무 너무 당연해요.
Hyunwoo: It’s too easy to answer.
Keith: I think we are all thinking me, right?
Seol: No me myself.
Keith: Yeah, yeah see we are all thinking me.
Hyunwoo: Me
Keith: Me.
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: Okay 넘어갑시다. What’s our grammar point?

Lesson focus

Seol: 첫 번째 grammar point는 마다예요.
Keith: And this came out in our vocabulary. What do we have in our vocabulary?
Hyunwoo: 달마다
Keith: What’s our first part?
Hyunwoo: 달
Keith: One of the readings for month.
Hyunwoo: 마다
Keith: Every, each, all. So…
Hyunwoo: 달마다
Keith: Every month.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: So this is a particle which attaches to nouns.
Hyunwoo: 맞아요.
Keith: So can we have an example from this conversation?
Hyunwoo: 시험을 달마다 보다.
Keith: Take a test every month.
Hyunwoo: 네. 정말 힘들겠다.
Keith: Now you can keep doing that until you get the score that you want 점수 넘을 때까지.
Hyunwoo: 네 근데 I get so tired from taking a test 그래서 너무 힘들 것 같아요.
Keith: Oh you are so weak.
Hyunwoo: I do my best in taking tests. That’s why. 그런데 달마다 말고 다른 명사를 쓰면 또 다른 표현을 만들 수 있어요. 예를 들어서
Seol: 학교마다 운동장이 있다.
Keith: Let’s break that down.
Seol: 학교
Keith: School
Seol: 마다
Keith: Every
Seol: 운동장이 있다.
Keith: Playground is. There is a playground for every school. All right so let’s have a couple of examples. What do you do every day?
Hyunwoo: 날마다요? 저는 날마다 영어 공부를 해요.
Keith: I study English every day.
Seol: 저는 날마다 티비를 봐요.
Keith: 완전히 반대 아니에요? I watch TV every day.
Hyunwoo: Keith는 날마다 뭐 해요?
Keith: 날마다 자요. Everybody does right?
Seol: Umm it’s really plain.
Keith: Sorry okay. So I have a question though. What about every home. What do you say?
Hyunwoo: 집집마다
Keith: Why do you repeat 집 home?
Hyunwoo: 집마다라고 해도 되는데 too short 그리고 집, 이집, 저집, 우리 집, 너네 집, 그들 집 이렇게 집집마다 makes a good rhythm, 집집마다.
Seol: 강조하는 거죠.
Hyunwoo: 네. 예를 들어서 나라나라마다 사람사람마다
Seol: 맞아요. 그렇게도 말할 수 있어요.
Hyunwoo: 네, 그런데 사람은 두 글자죠. Two letters 근데 집은 한 글자예요. 집집마다 sounds better than 집마다.
Keith: So what time are we going to say 날날마다.
Hyunwoo: 날날 발음이 너무 어려워요.
Keith: Yeah.
Hyunwoo: 날날마다
Keith: Okay so 집. What other single syllable words repeat?
Hyunwoo: 곧곧마다
Keith: Every place.
Seol: 그러네요. 집집마다와 곧곧마다가 가장 잘 쓰이는 예인 것 같아요.
Keith: Just us two huh? For the most part.
Hyunwoo: 그런데 for some reason, 집집마다라는 표현이 많이 쓰이니까 집집마다가 가장 익숙해요. 그리고 KoreanClass101의 레슨을 들으면 레슨마다 재미있는 내용이 진짜 많아요.
Keith: Every lesson, there is an exciting story to tell. Okay let’s move on. What’s our next grammar point?
Seol: 뭐뭐에 뭐뭐씩
Keith: Okay. It’s kind of hard to translate without going into an example. So let’s go right into today’s conversation.
Hyunwoo: 소연 said 두 달에 한 번씩.
Keith: Once every two months.
Hyunwoo: 네, 이렇게 뭐뭐에 그러니까 두 달에라고 말하고 한 번씩 once 한 번씩 이렇게 만들 수 있죠.
Keith: Okay so the way we construct this is we need a time word first. In English, you say once every two months. You say two months at the end but here you got to say it in the front. 앞에서 말해야 되죠. So it’s time word and this is referring to a length of time 예를 들으면.
Seol: 1달
Keith: One month.
Seol: 2달
Keith: Two months
Seol: 1년
Keith: One year
Seol: 1주일
Keith: One week
Seol: 하루
Keith: One day 1시간도 되죠?
Seol: 네, 1시간.
Keith: One hour. Okay and then we add that particle 에 and now after that, we have a number. Once, twice, three times, four times 근데 한국말로 어떻게 말해요?
Hyunwoo: 씩. 1번
Keith: Once.
Hyunwoo: 2번
Keith: Twice
Hyunwoo: 3번
Keith: Three times.
Hyunwoo: 4번, 5번, 6번, 7번, 8번, 9번
Keith: All of those times.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: And then after that, we need one more thing.
Hyunwoo: 씩. That means each or every. 그래서 두 달에 한 번씩, 한 달에 한 번씩, 세 달에 한 번씩.
Keith: Let’s break down what 소연 said just really quickly.
Hyunwoo: 두 달
Keith: Two months.
Hyunwoo: 에
Keith: At
Hyunwoo: 한 번
Keith: Once
Hyunwoo: 씩
Keith: Time. So translate once every two months.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 예를 들어서 KoreanClass 레슨은 하루에 한 번씩 나와요.
Keith: One day, one time. Korean class comes out once a day.
Hyunwoo: 네
Seol: 저는 일주일에 한 번씩 쇼핑을 해요.
Keith: One week, one time shopping. Go shopping once a week.
Hyunwoo: 진짜요?
Seol: 아니요. 그랬으면 좋겠어요.
Hyunwoo: 저는 일 년에 한 번씩 쇼핑해요.
Keith: 저는 일 년에 한 번씩 밥 먹어요.
Seol: 뭐야
Hyunwoo: Are you a boa constrictor or something? 저는 한 달에 한 번씩 영화를 봐요.
Keith: Watch a movie once a month. You got a lot of money hah!
Hyunwoo: 한국에서는 영화보는 거 그렇게 비싸지 않아요. 7천원, 8천원?
Keith: Hmm 미국에서 그랬으면 I probably watch it 한 달에 한 번씩 once a month.
Seol: 미국에서는 얼마인데요?
Keith: 12불 정도요.
Seol: 비슷하네요. 별로 차이 안 나잖아요.
Hyunwoo: 한국에서는 7, 8천원 미국 달러면
Seol: 거의 한 8, 9불? 8, 9달러? 비슷하네. 가서 팝콘 사 먹고 콜라사 먹으면 비슷하겠네. 내가 영화 보여 줄게요.
Keith: Please do! All right, so that’s going to do it. We are out of time. See you next time.
Seol: 날마다 제 목소리 들으세요.
Hyunwoo: 다음 레슨에서도 꼭 만나요.
