Your friend recommends a Korean dish. You head out to the nearest Korean supermarket, pick it up, and take a bite into it… Cringe! Why did your friend say this Korean food was unbelievable!? Ok, you decided to trust your friend and give it another shot. You take your second bite… and… hey not bad! You take your third bite, and you’re already on your way back to the closest Korean supermarket!

In this Korean lesson, you’ll learn how to express the more you do something, the more you enjoy it. Or if you’re not a fan of your friend’s recommendation, the more you hate it. In this lesson, you will learn how to use the grammatical structure (으)면 -(으)ㄹ수, the more, the better.

어휴… 공부하고 싶으면 싶을 수록 덜 시간이 있어요! 짜증나!
공주병이랑 왕자병은 정말 우스운 표현들 이죠.

점, 질문 두 개 있는데요…
1) In one of the given examples, “술은 마시면 마실 수록 더 마시고 싶어져 (The more you drink, the more you want to drink)”, the 더 is optional, right?
2) Regarding “the more/the less” grammatical structures. Do I have those right?
the more X, the more Y: X(으)면 X(으)ㄹ수록, (더) Y
the less X, the more Y: 덜 X(으)면 X(으)ㄹ수록, (더) Y
the more X, the less Y: X(으)면 X(으)ㄹ수록, 덜 Y
the less X, the less Y: 덜 X(으)면 X(으)ㄹ수록, 덜 Y

감사합니다!

Hello, Eric.
about 1, 더 is optional.
about 2, hm…
1) the more X, the more Y: X(으)면 X(으)ㄹ수록, (더) Y
2) the less X, the more Y: 덜 X(으)면 X(으)ㄹ수록, (더) Y
3) the more X, the less Y: X(으)면 X(으)ㄹ수록, 덜 Y
4) the less X, the less Y: 덜 X(으)면 X(으)ㄹ수록, 덜 Y

to me, 1) and 4) make sense.
2) and 3)…??? examples? in English?

-하면 할수록 -하다.
덜 -하면 할수록 덜 -하다.

cheers,
Tim

안녕하세요, Tim! Examples:
2) The less I study the more time I have to play with you. 덜 공부하면 공부할수록 더 너랑 놀 시간이 있잖아요 (?).
3) The more I studied the less I ended up watching worthless shows on TV. 공부하면 공부할수록 텔레비전으로 무가치한 프로를 덜 보게 됐어요.(Are the tenses and placement of 덜 ok?)

YES!!! Those make sense! 한국어 표현도 좋구요. ^^

2) 공부를 덜 하면 할수록 잡생각이 많아진다  . 하하^^
You wrote:

George Posten says:

얼마는 양을 남아있는지… grrr when what I’m thinking does not match what I type

양 이 ? eh just shoot me

Hello Kayla 님
“-구요.” is actually broken Korean. It is from “-고요.”

George Posten 님
“비누가 얼마나 남았는지” 라고 보통 말합니다.
If it’s a liquid 비누. you can say 양이 얼마나 남았는지 or 양이 얼만큼 남았는지.
But usually 비누 is a solid. *^^*

I think there’s a mistake where Keith translates these: “Hmm… really, the more I look at myself, the prettier I am,” and “Everytime I see you, I get annoyed”. The Korean sentences read for them seem to be the same, the latter a repeat of the former.
