Woman: Sure. You want all of it?
Minsu: Hmm...when is this shop open 'til?
Woman: Here? We're open 'til nine o'clock.
Minsu: Then, I'll come back at eight o'clock.
Woman: Okay, bye.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: Well I don’t think I am old enough to talk about this as if it was something that happened a long, long time ago but when I was young, most people thought it was just unacceptable to buy Kimchi from a store.
Miseon: 네, 맞아요. It was just considered to be one of the major responsibilities of women.
Hyunwoo: Exactly and my mother too, she is in her mid-50s and she used to make all the Kimchi herself.
Miseon: 우리 엄마도 마찬가지예요.
Hyunwoo: 아 그래요?
Miseon: 항상 만드세요.
Hyunwoo: 네. But I think it’s changing a little bit right?
Miseon: 네네. It’s changing a little bit. You know, sometimes a lot actually.
Hyunwoo: Yeah.
Miseon: Especially like younger generation.
Hyunwoo: Right yeah and my mother still likes to make Kimchi herself and the Kimchi she makes is like the best Kimchi in the world at least to me but she sometimes goes to a Kimchi store and buys some Kimchi.
Miseon: 네, 저도요.
Hyunwoo: Me too.
Miseon: And for small amounts, you can buy little packs of Kimchi at any convenience store in Korea too.
Hyunwoo: Sure and they are very cheap too. Less than like USD1 for each pack and they are quite tasty too.
Miseon: But I still think as far as Kimchi goes, it’s best to make it at home.
Hyunwoo: I agree.
Miseon: Even though I can’t make it.
Hyunwoo: You can’t?
Miseon: Sorry. My mom didn’t teach me. It’s her fault.
Hyunwoo: Well for me, I will try to make it one of my hobbies in the future.
Miseon: Really? Are you serious?
Hyunwoo: Well I don’t know. Well let’s go on to the vocab section now.
Miseon: Okay.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: Okay let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word we are going to have a look at is
Miseon: 전부
Hyunwoo: All, whole, totally.
Miseon: 전부 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 전부 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: And this word 전부 literally means entire plus part.
Miseon: 네. 전 means entire and 부 means part.
Hyunwoo: Can you give us some example sentences using this word.
Miseon: 그럼요
Hyunwoo: 네.
Miseon: 전부 주세요.
Hyunwoo: Give me all of them.
Miseon: 전부 왔어요?
Hyunwoo: Did everybody come? So it can be used to refer to people too.
Miseon: 네. But one thing that is interesting is that this word 전부 is often used together with the word 다 which also means all or totally.
Hyunwoo: Yeah so 전부 means all and 다 means all but people often say 전부 다 together.
Miseon: 네, 맞아요. 전부 다 주세요, 현우씨.
Hyunwoo: Give you everything? 전부 다 왔어요? Like this.
Miseon: 네. But there is not much difference in the nuance if you just use one of these words or both of them together.
Hyunwoo: Yeah it just comes out of habit and it’s one of the patterns that Korean people just happen to use without noticing and it’s good to know right?
Miseon: Uh-huh. It’s more like rhythmic, right? 전부 다.
Hyunwoo: 네, 전부 다.
Miseon: 전부 다 Instead of 전부.
Hyunwoo: Yeah it’s more rhythmical.
Miseon: Right.
Hyunwoo: So let’s go to the grammar point of this lesson now.
Miseon: 네. 같이 갑시다.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: 네. Okay what’s the grammar point of this lesson?
Miseon: It’s -나요? One of the most common sentence endings when asking a question in Korean.
Hyunwoo: As in the example.
Miseon: 이 김치 맛있나요?
Hyunwoo: Is this Kimchi good?
Miseon: So when asking a question in Korean, the most better way to ask something is adding 아/어/여요 at the end of the verb stem right?
Hyunwoo: Yes and this is very straightforward and direct.
Miseon: 네, 맞아요. But in Korea, people like to use a more indirect way to ask question right?
Hyunwoo: Yeah because they don’t want to sound like hey, I want to know.
Miseon: Right I wanted right? It’s too direct.
Hyunwoo: Too direct.
Miseon: So one of the ways to avoid doing that is to use the sentence ending -나요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and it has the nuance of actually asking oneself at the same time.
Miseon: So this ending -나요 is similar to saying I wonder in English.
Hyunwoo: Right although the basic sentence ending for questions can almost always be used where -나요 can be used. People still like to use -나요.
Miseon: 네. Because they hope to be less direct and accusing when asking a question.
Hyunwoo: Yeah by using -나요, one gets the feeling that the asking energy is divided into two directions. Halfway toward the other person and halfway toward oneself.
Miseon: 네, 맞아요. That’s a nice way to explain it, 현우씨.
Hyunwoo: Thanks. All right. Then how do you construct a sentence using this structure?
Miseon: Verb stem plus 나요.
Hyunwoo: Very simple and we are going to introduce one more sentence ending that has the same function in the next lesson but for now, this -나요 is basically used with action verbs.
Miseon: So, for example, to do is 하다 and it becomes 하 plus 나요. So 하나요?
Hyunwoo: 하나요? And it means do you do or I wonder if you do or even if you could answer me, do you?
Miseon: And to read is 읽다, right?
Hyunwoo: Yes.
Miseon: And it is, 읽 plus 나요. So it becomes 읽나요?
Hyunwoo: Yeah and it means, do you read? I wonder if you read. And this sentence ending 나요 can be used with the past tense and also the honorific suffix 시. So let’s have a look at it together. How do you say to do?
Miseon: 하다
Hyunwoo: Past tense did.
Miseon: 했다
Hyunwoo: Great. Using 나요 how do you say that?
Miseon: 했나요?
Hyunwoo: Yes and how do you say to read?
Miseon: 읽다
Hyunwoo: And how about past tense read?
Miseon: 읽었다
Hyunwoo: And using 나요?
Miseon: 읽었나요?
Hyunwoo: Great. Now let’s look at honorific using 시.
Miseon: Okay so to do is 하다 and with 시 it’s 하시다.
Hyunwoo: Honorific and using 나요 with that
Miseon: 하시나요
Hyunwoo: 하시나요 and to read
Miseon: 읽다, 읽으시다
Hyunwoo: Using 나요?
Miseon: 읽으시나요?
Hyunwoo: Great.
Miseon: 현우씨, 지금 뭐 읽으시나요?
Hyunwoo: I am reading 저는 지금 대본을 읽고 있어요.
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: I am reading the 대본, the script.
Miseon: 뭐 하시나요, 현우씨?
Hyunwoo: 지금 저는 녹음하고 있어요. 미선씨는 뭐 하시나요?
Miseon: 저도요.
Hyunwoo: Great. Now let’s look at how it was used in the dialogue for this lesson.
Miseon: 네. 이 김치 맛있나요?
Hyunwoo: Is this Kimchi good?
Miseon: 이 김치 전부 살 수 있나요?
Hyunwoo: Can I buy all of this Kimchi?
Miseon: 이것도 전부 살 수 있나요?
Hyunwoo: Can I buy all of these too?
Miseon: 여기 몇 시까지 하나요?
Hyunwoo: When is this shop open till? Great. Now before we finish and go home, let’s have a look at some sample sentences.
Miseon: Yeah, sample sentences, I like it.
Hyunwoo: I like them too. I will give you the English sentences. So how do you say what time are you coming tomorrow?
Miseon: 내일은 몇 시에 오시나요?
Hyunwoo: Yeah it sounds very good. You are not accusing anybody, you are not asking anything too directly. You are asking yourself at the same time.
Miseon: Great.
Hyunwoo: Yeah 몇 시에 오시나요? I can’t help but if you don’t answer me but I am wondering. So please answer me, that kind of nuance right?
Miseon: 언제는 갈게요.
Hyunwoo: You are going to come any time?
Miseon: Right.
Hyunwoo: I can call you any time.
Miseon: Yes.
Hyunwoo: Okay that’s great to know. So the next sentence, has everybody come?
Miseon: 다 왔나요?
Hyunwoo: 다 왔나요? And the next one I would like to know in Korean is, in this restaurant, what is delicious?
Miseon: 이 식당은 뭐가 맛있나요?

Outro

Hyunwoo: Great. So 미선씨, that just about does it for today.
Miseon: 네. Unfortunately.
Hyunwoo: Unfortunately but before we go, we want to tell you about a way to drastically improve your pronunciation.
Miseon: Sure the voice recording tool.
Hyunwoo: Yes the voice recording tool in the Premium learning center.
Miseon: Record your voice with a click of a button.
Hyunwoo: And then playback just as easily.
Miseon: So you record your voice and then listen to it.
Hyunwoo: Compare it to the native speakers
Miseon: And adjust your pronunciation.
Hyunwoo: This will help you improve your pronunciation fast.
Miseon: All right.
Hyunwoo: So everybody 정말 수고하셨어요.
Miseon: 네, 감사합니다.
Hyunwoo: 미선씨, 오늘 after the recording 녹음 끝나고 재미있는 일 있나요?
Miseon: 그럼요.
Hyunwoo: 뭐예요? Can I come too?
Miseon: 물론이죠. 현우씨하고 밥 먹어요.
Hyunwoo: 좋아요. It sounds exciting and you are going to pay right?
Miseon: No…
Hyunwoo: Okay we can talk about that afterwards right?
Miseon: Well...
Hyunwoo: Okay we will see you at KoreanClass101.com everybody.
Miseon: 여러분 들어주셔서 감사합니다. 안녕히 계세요.
Hyunwoo: Thank you for listening. Bye.
Miseon: Bye.
