여러분 안녕하세요? 윤세화입니다.
여러분이 한국에 갔을 때 사람들한테 느꼈던 점들은 어떤 것들이 있나요? 한국사람들은 모든 걸을 빨리 빨리 하는 걸 매우 좋아합니다. 식사주문을 할 때도 “빨리 갖다 주세요”, 하거나 인터넷을 할 때도 빨리 빨리 하는 것을 좋아합니다. 많은 사람들이 3초안에 인터넷 창이 열리지 않으면 그 창을 닫아버린답니다. 그런 이유 때문에 한국이 세계에서 가장 빠른 인터넷 네트워크를 가지고 있죠. 한국에 가셔서 인터넷을 할 기회가 있으면 놀라실 거여요. 굉장히 빠르거든요. 여러분, 혹시 1분 스테이크 들어보셨나요? 워낙 한국 사람들이 빨리 빨리를 외치다 보니까 특별한 돌로 만든 그릇을 만들어서 웨이터가 들고 오는 사이에 스테이크가 익혀지는 1분 스테이크 입니다. 음식을 주문하고 나서 3분 안에 음식이 나오지 않으면 모든 음식값이 무료이라고 하더군요. 참 신기하죠? 많은 사람들이 택시를 타도, “저 급하니까 빨리 가주세요”, 라는 말은 기본입니다. 그리고 퀵서비스라는 말을 들어보셨어요? 뭐든지 빨리 배달해주는 퀵서비스가 있는데요, 예를 들어 서류나 개인물품을 어디로 보내려 할 때 퀵서비스로 보내면 오토바이로 바로 그날 배달해주는 퀵서비스입니다. 전화로 음식을 주문하는 것에도 빨리 라는 말이 항상 붙어요, 한국에서는 거의 모든 음식이 전화로 배달이 가능한데요, 그 중에서도 빨리 배달해준다는 식당들이 더 성업을 하는 이유도 그것이겠지요? 꽃 배달도 주문을 한 후 2시간 안에 받을 수가 있어요 급하게 꽃을 연인에게 보낼 때에는 참 좋겠죠? 운전할 때 길을 가르쳐 주는 네비게이션도 빨리 보여주는 상품들이 인기가 많아요. 그리고 어떤 인터넷 네트워크 회사의 구호는 “빛보다 빠른 초고속 인터넷”입니다.
말만 들어도 딱 감이 오지 않나요? 초고속이라는 말이 매우 빠르다는 말인데 그 앞에 “빛보다 빠르다”라는 말이 붙어요, 한국사람들 정말 빨리 빨리 하는 것을 좋아하죠? 제 외국인 친구들은 한국에서 건물 짓는 속도에 매우 놀라더군요, 자고 일어나면 금새 큰 빌딩들이 다 만들어져 있다고요. 저 또한 성격이 몹시 급한 편인데요, 뭔가를 천천히 기다린다는 것이 참 쉽지가 않더라고요.
처음에 미국에 왔을 때 모든 것이 많이 달라서 참 놀랐습니다. 버스에 사람들이 올라타는 것도, 병원의 프런트 데스크에서 이야기를 하는 것도 항상 한 사람 한 사람이 자신의 이야기를 하고 열심히 듣기 때문에 시간이 참 많이 걸리더군요. 덕분에 뒤에서 줄 서있는 저는 “빨리, 빨리”, 라는 생각을 버릴 수가 없었답니다. 이런 한국인의 빨리 빨리 문화가 어떤 때에는 적응하기도 힘들었을 때가 있었을 텐데요.

한국에 간 적이 없고 그런 빨리 빨리 문화가 친숙하지 않아요. 사실은 조금 짜증난 가끔 무례한 사람들이 이래요. 그럼 뉴욕이나 파리에서 사는 사람들도 이래요.
문화를 말하면 잘 몰라요. 전 이것을 할 수 있어요: 별별 사람들을 다 만났잖아요. 근데 제 미국에서 사는 한국 친구들이랑 우리 가족들 치고는 이렇진 않아요. 그들의 성격이 몹시 이해심 있는 편인 것 같아요. 
무론요, 문화는 중요해는데도 곳도 날씨도 다 중요해요. 예를 들어면, 시골이나 하와이처럼 더운 곳에서는 사람들이 보통 더 천천히 하고 착한 편인 것 같아요. 근데 대도시에서는 사람들이 많고 매일 매일 경쟁해야 돼거든요. 그러니까 모든 것을 빨리 하게 마련이요. 빨리 빨리나 천천히, 제 생각에는 자신 사람이 핵심 요인이죠.
그건 그렇고, 퀵서비스랑 초고속 인테넷이랑 택배처럼 것들이 아주 편리하네요. 저는 빨리 하고 싶을 일들이 있는데 천천히 하고 싶을 일들도 있어요. 예를 들아면, 가능할 때는, 먹는 것 (제 제일 좋아한 화제이죠) 치고는 천천히 해요.
[Intended meaning: I haven’t been to Korea and I’m not familiar with this “quick-quick” culture. To tell the truth, I heard the people are a bit impatient and sometimes rude. Well, I heard that about people from NYC and Paris, too. If you’re talking about culture, I don’t really know. Here is what I can say: As far as my Korean friends and family members living in the US go, they are not this way. Their nature seems to be more on the very understanding side.
Of course, culture matters but so does place and weather. For example, in the countryside or in warm places like Hawaii, it seems people usually tend to do things more slowly and tend to be nicer. However, in the big city, there are a lot of people and they have to compete every single day. As a consequence, it’s only natural that things are done quickly. Quickly or slowly, in my opinion, the person itself is the decisive factor.
Anyways, things like quick-service, high-speed internet, and delivery service are very convenient. I like to do some things fast but there things I like to do slowly. For instance, when possible, I like to take my time to eat (eating is my favorite topic, isn’t it J).]
Sorry, this is a long post, but this is my only practice…

있잖아요. When having a meal, eating slowly is good for health and you can appreciate its flavor.

Hi 윤세화선생님,
Wow! I just found the site today and this is the second lesson I listened to. I am highly impressed by your teaching and this site. First of all I like the site because I have had no problems viewing its content even though I do not use the Windows operating system or Mac — I run Linux on my PCs and the fact that this site content works perfectly is a testament to the fact that your web designer is adhering to standards. My compliments!
Looking at the comments I see other students who may be non-Korean like me, and the fact that they seem to understand your lesson makes me a bit jealous, or rather motivated to study more diligently. However, I also understood all but about 3 words of this lesson, and ALL of the 온돌방 lesson, as I read along with your reading.
Your voice and pronunciation is crystal clear and I really appreciate that you do not use obnoxious background music as do some of the other Korean audio I have heard elsewhere.
이런 말을 다 한굴로 쓰고 싶지만 아찌 실력이 부족해서 너무 느리게 칠하는 것도 불편하고 자꾸 맞춤법이 틀리니까 당황해요.

ugh… 음주 칠한 것 같아서 .. 취하지 않을 때는 더 쓸께요.
손가락 - ㄱ 하고 ㄴ 은 내가 보기에는 너무 비슷해서 난독중이라서… 이해 좀 해주세요. 때로는 난 ㅗ 가 ㅜ 로 읽고 거꾸로도 하지요. ‘ㅐ’와 ‘’ㅔ’도 잘 구별하지 않고 ‘ㅜ’와 ‘ㅡ’는 마찬가지지요.
