At the marketplace when you are talking about prices, there is another phrase that will come in very handy. That phrase is, lower please as in lower the price. In Korean, that phrase is 깎아주세요 (kkakkajuseyo). One more time slowly, 깎아주세요 (kkakkajuseyo). And now by syllable, 깎-아-주-세-요 (kka-kka-ju-se-yo). Now, when you are in Korea, you will have plenty of opportunity to use this. Even at department stores, you can haggle. Isn’t that crazy? I think it’s crazy because in America, no way is that going to happen. Anyway, Korea has plenty of marketplaces where you can go and use this phrase.
Now, when I was in Korea, I was at this supermarket Wal-Mart type-ish place called Kim’s Club and they sell everything from groceries to shoes to shirts and I was in the Levi’s section looking at shirts when I saw a shirt that I liked for 23,000 won which is roughly around USD23 and there is no way I am going to pay 23,000 won for a shirt. So I said, you guessed it. 깎아주세요 (kkakkajuseyo). And he gave me a funny look and he said, no. So I just kind of walked around pretending like I was going to leave and he tapped me on my shoulder and said, okay and he finally brought it down to 20,000 won. USD3 well saved. There are certain marketplaces where if you go after midnight, prices are half off. So if you are night shopper or day shopper, this phrase is just for you.
Okay. To close our today’s lesson, we’d like for you to practice what you’ve learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So 화이팅 (hwaiting)!
Lower please - 깎아주세요 (kkakkajuseyo).
All right, that’s going to do it for today.
