Miseon: This conversation takes place on the road.
Keith: O-o, thatโs not good. Youโre not supposed to be talking while youโre on the road. On the phone at least.
Miseon: No.
Keith: You can talk to people next to you. All right, whoโs this conversation between?
Miseon: The conversation between a police officer and a lady who was driving a little too fast. O-o.
Keith: O-o, All right.
Miseon: Problem.

๊ฒฝ์ฐฐ (gyeongchal): ์์ฃผ๋จธ๋, ๋ฉดํ์ฆ ์ฃผ์ธ์. (ajumeoni, myeonheojeung juseyo.)
Keith: Ma'am, please give me your driver's license.

Keith: What? Why?
| ๊ฒฝ์ฐฐ (gyeongchal): ๊ณผ์์
๋๋ค. (gwasok-imnida.) |
Keith: You were speeding.
์์ค๋ง (ajumma): ๋ค? ์ ๊ฐ์? ์ฃ์กํด์... ์ ๊ฐ ์ค๋... ์ค์ํ ์ฝ์์ด ์์ด์. (ne? je-gayo? joesonghaeyo... je-ga oneul... jung-yohan yaksok-i isseoyo.)
Keith: What? Me? I'm sorry. I have...an...important appointment today.
๊ฒฝ์ฐฐ (gyeongchal): ๊ทธ๋์์? ๋ฉดํ์ฆ ์ฃผ์ธ์. (geuraeseoyo? myeonheojeung juseyo.)
Keith: So? Give me your driver's license.
์์ค๋ง (ajumma): ๊ทธ๋์... ์ง์์ ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ๋์์ด์. (geuraeseo... jib-eseo ppalli nawasseoyo.)
Keith: So...I hurried out of my house.
๊ฒฝ์ฐฐ (gyeongchal): ๊ทธ๋์์? (geuraeseoyo?)
Keith: So?
์์ค๋ง (ajumma): ๊ทธ๋์ ์ง๊ธ ๋ฉดํ์ฆ์ด ์์ด์... ํ ๋ฒ๋ง ๋ด์ฃผ์ธ์. ๋ค? (geuraeseo jigeum myeonheojeung-i eopseoyo... han beon-man bwajuseyo. ne?)
Keith: So...I don't have my driver's license card with me now. Please let it slide...will you?
| ๊ฒฝ์ฐฐ (gyeongchal): ์ ๋ผ์. ๋ฒ๊ธ์
๋๋ค. (an dwaeyo. beolgeum-imnida.) |
Keith: No. You're going to be fined.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Keith: Miseon-ssi, did you ever get a ticket while youโre driving in Korea?
Miseon: In fact I donโt have a driving license, so I never drived in my whole life. Sorry.
Keith: Oh, never.
Miseon: Never ever.
Keith: Well, itโs a good thing, because โฆ
Miseon: Isnโt that stupid?
Keith: No, no no no. I think itโs great because driving โฆ I donโt have a lot of good experiences with driving, including tickets and accidents.
Miseon: So, it means you have a lot of fines.
Keith: Well, letโs move on.
Miseon: Okay.
Keith: But, you know what in this conversation, in Korean they said something along the lines of please let it slide, right?
Miseon: ๋ค (ne). Iโm sure you said so many times about it, right? It means like ํ๋ฒ๋ง ๋ด์ฃผ์ธ์ (hanbeonman bwajuseyo) right?
Keith: Yeah.
Miseon: Yeah.
Keith: Well, itโs not exactly right. To say this. Itโs not 100% ethical, maybe. I donโt know. What the word is, but you know, the law is law. If you have to pay some fine, a penalty you have to, but sometimes.
Miseon: Right, right. Still a lot of people thinks is too cold or too strict if they have to abide by all the little rules, so they give it a try, right?
Keith: Yeah, they give it a try to say, one more time itโs:
Miseon: ํ๋ฒ๋ง ๋ด์ฃผ์ธ์. (hanbeonman bwajuseyo)
Keith: Right, and you know, if you say you got nothing to lose. But you know what? Honestly I think in Korea, you know, thereโre โฆ of course there are rules itโs a society, and โฆ But, I think the policemen they tend to let little things here and there slide, right?
Miseon: Yeah, I think, if you mean like a nice officer, then youโll probably have a chance to let it slide, so โฆ
Keith: So, I mean like, itโs not like super super strict rule. I mean of course theyโre not going to let like a murderer slide. But you know, may be little things here and there if itโs not such a big deal, if you not bothering anyone, itโs like, So, Come on, let it slide, ํ๋ฒ๋ง ๋ด์ฃผ์ธ์ (hanbeonman bwajuseyo) and itโs like Okay.
Miseon: ๋ค ๋ค (ne ne) Maybe, little bit of time, right?
Keith: Yeah, may be sometimes.
Miseon: Yeah.
Keith: All right, letโs move on to the vocabulary.
Miseon: ๋ค (ne)
VOCAB LIST
Keith: First word we have is:
Miseon: ๋ฉดํ์ฆ (myeonheojeung) [natural native speed]
Keith: driver's license card

Miseon: ๋นจ๋ฆฌ (ppalli) [slowly - broken down by syllable]

Miseon: ๋ด์ฃผ๋ค (bwajuda) [natural native speed]
Keith: to let it slide
Miseon: ๋ด์ฃผ๋ค (bwajuda) [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Miseon: ๋ด์ฃผ๋ค (bwajuda) [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: All right, letโs take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Miseon: ๋ค (ne). The first word weโll look at is ๋ฉดํ์ฆ (myeonheojeung)
Keith: And thatโs a driverโs license.
Miseon: ๋ฉดํ์ฆ, ๋ฉดํ์ฆ. (myeonheojeung, myeonheojeung.)
Keith: Okay, so the word ๋ฉดํ์ฆ (myeonheojeung) is actually the card, right? The physical card itself. What about just the driverโs license?
Miseon: Driverโs license is ๋ฉดํ. (myeonheo.)
Keith: Right, so the permission, the license to drive is ๋ฉดํ. (myeonheo.)
Miseon: ๋ค (ne). And ์ฆ (jeung) is a word for identifications, or certification like ์ ๋ถ์ฆ (sinbunjeung)
Keith: And thatโs ID card. Can we have that word one more time?
Miseon: ์ ๋ถ์ฆ, ์ ๋ถ์ฆ. (sinbunjeung, sinbunjeung.)
Keith: And of course thereโs a lot of identification cards, may be like a student card, whatโs that?
Miseon: ๋ค (ne). ํ์์ฆ. (haksaengjeung.)
Keith: Right, and it has a ์ฆ (jeung) at the end, right?
Miseon: ๋ค (ne).
Keith: And most of our students know that ํ์ (haksaeng) is student, so right after that we had ์ฆ (jeung), and we got student card.
Miseon: ๋ค๋ง์์. (nemajayo.)
Keith: All right, whatโs the next word we are taking a look at?
Miseon: ๊ณผ์ (gwasok)
Keith: And thatโs speeding, or driving too fast.
Miseon: ๊ณผ์, ๊ณผ์. (gwasok, gwasok.)
Keith: Okay, itโs a short word, ๊ณผ์ (gwasok), and just two syllables, but you can actually break this word down.
Miseon: ๋ค (ne) And it will be easier to remember too. The first letter is ๊ณผ (gwa).
Keith: And that one means โexcessiveโ or โtoo muchโ.
Miseon: ๋ค (gwa) and then, the second letter is ์ (sok).
Keith: And that one means โspeedโ, so literally what it is in the ํ์ (hyeonja) is ๊ณผ์ (gwasok), thatโs excessive speeding.
Miseon: ๋ค๋ง์์. So ๊ณผ์ํ์ง ๋ง์ธ์~ (nemajayo. So gwasokaji maseyo~)
Keith: Oh, donโt worry. I donโt speed. Sometimes. I donโt even drive anymore.
Miseon: You didnโt say before.
Keith: Letโs take a look at the focus for this lesson.
Miseon: ๋ค (ne)
Lesson focus
|
Keith: All right, Whatโs the focus? What are we taking a look at?
Miseon: The focus of this lesson is to how to say โsoโ, or โthereforeโ in Korean, and also to learn some expressions about driving.
Keith: Okay, can we have an example?
Miseon: ๋ค (ne). ๊ทธ๋์ ์ง๊ธ ๋ฉดํ์ฆ์ด ์์ด์. (geuraeseo jigeum myeonheojeungi eopseoyo.)
Keith: โSo, I donโt have my driverโs license now.โ
Miseon: So, when you want to say โsoโ, or โthereforeโ in Korean, this is the simplest way to do yet, just say ๊ทธ๋์. (geuraeseo.)
Keith: Yeah, you can conjugate the verb of a previous sentence to connect two sentences. But even you donโt do that, just by saying ๊ทธ๋์ (geuraeseo) will link two sentences as well.
Miseon: ๋ค๋ง์์. (nemajayo.) And like in English, If you just say ๊ทธ๋์? (geuraeseo?) as a question, it can both be a curious enquiry about what happened next, and a sarcastic โSo what?โ
Keith: All right, and you can say your sarcastic โso whatโ in polite language too, right?
Miseon: ๋ค (ne). ๊ทธ๋์์? (geuraeseoyo?)
Keith: Pretty sarcastic, yeah. Could we have an example?
Miseon: ๋ค (ne). ์ด์ ๋น๊ฐ ์์ด์. ๊ทธ๋์ ์ง์ ์์์ด์. (eoje biga wasseoyo. geuraeseo jibe isseosseoyo.)
Keith: It rained yesterday, so I stayed at home. ๊ทธ๋์์? (geuraeseoyo?) Okay, so?
Miseon: ๊ทธ๋์์? (geuraeseoyo?)
Keith: Itโs pretty sarcastic. All right, so how was ๊ทธ๋์์? (geuraeseoyo?) used in the dialogue for this lesson?
Miseon: ๊ทธ๋์์? (geuraeseoyo?)
Keith: "So?"
Miseon: ๊ทธ๋์... ์ง์์ ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ๋์์ด์. (geuraeseo... jibeseo ppalli nawasseoyo.)
Keith: "So... I hurried out of the house."
Miseon: ๊ทธ๋์์? (geuraeseoyo?)
Keith: "So?"
Miseon: ๊ทธ๋์ ์ง๊ธ ๋ฉดํ์ฆ์ด ์์ด์โฆ (geuraeseo jigeum myeonheojeungi eopseoyoโฆ)
Keith: "So I don't have my driver's license now." Okay, do you have a couple of more sample sentences for us?
Miseon: Sure, I would love to. Give me the English.
Keith: Alright, so first is, "So when are you going to come?"
Miseon: ๊ทธ๋์ ์ธ์ ์ฌ ๊ฑฐ์์? (geuraeseo eonje ol geoyeyo?)
Keith: "So what did you do?"
Miseon: ๊ทธ๋์ ์ด๋ป๊ฒ ํ์ด์? (geuraeseo eotteoke haesseoyo?)
Keith: "So what's the conclusion?"
Miseon: ๊ทธ๋์ ๊ฒฐ๋ก ์ด ๋ญ์์? (geuraeseo gyeolloni mwoyeyo?)
Outro
|
Miseon: Ready to test what you just have learnt?
Keith: Make this lessonโs vocabulary stick by using lesson specific flashcards in the learning centre.
Miseon: There is a reason everyone uses flash cards.
Keith: They work.
Miseon: They really do help memorization.
Keith: You can get the flash cards for this lesson at:

Keith: okay, thanks you everybody. Thanks for listening.
| Miseon: ๋ค ๊ฐ์ฌ๋๋ค ์ฌ๋ฌ๋ถ. ์๋
ํ ๊ณ์ธ์. (ne gamsanida yeoreobun. annyeonghi gyeseyo.) |
Keith: Bye bye.
