Learn Korean with KoreanClass101.com! You’ve arrived in Korea, and everything is just as you expected it, except for one thing. The person you came to visit, your husband, is behaving oddly. Maybe it’s because he’s in his military frame of mind, but he keeps answering you with varying degrees of formality, including saying “yes, ma’am” in Korean in response to your questions. You ask him in Korean, “What’s up?” but he just responds in Korean with, “Nothing’s wrong, ma’am.” While you wish he’d be this polite at home when you ask him to do chores around the house, it’s odd that he’s being so formal while you’re just having an ordinary Korean conversation now. So to turn the tables, you start thinking of your honey-do list and the things you want to buy and mention them in Korean. You tell him in Korean, “You’re being so agreeable today that I think I’ll buy that purse I’ve been wanting for a while.” He doesn’t offer any response, so you continue in Korean, “And how about if we spend a little money and fix up the back yard that our dog tore up last year with some new plants and a new shed for your tools?” We’ll see how long he keeps saying “yes, ma’am” in Korean now!

[Bro’, you’ll be fine. In spite of the problems you have with your superior, (try to) enjoy your military service. I’ll come visit as soon as possible, so I’m saying you should just remember the good memories of our childhood. Also, I’ll bring you some good food I would have prepared myself. You know I know how to cook well, don’t you? Given that I am your big brother, it is only natural that I help you, you know.
…Well, that was the intended meaning anyway]
