:razz:Hi Jess,

That's right. But here is the difference : )

같다 literally means 'it looks like'. Korean people use the verb and combine it with other verbs to be more polite and indirect although they are sure something.

If you take out the verb 같다, you can see

가방을 살 것 같아요 -> 가방을 살 것 입니다.
김치는 맛있는 것 같아요 -> 김치는 맛있습니다.

The verb 같다 doesn't make some sentences become future tense or present tense. You should check the core-verb like 살 것입니다 or 맛있습니다 to see if that's future tense or not.

That's why 가방을 살 것 같아요 is the future tense while 가방을 산 것 같아요 is the present tense.

--

And 김치는 맛있는 것 같아요 means 'I think Kimchi is delicious' as you said : )

Also You can replace 같이 with 처럼. Both means the same and replaceable anytime.

I hope this helps.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Thank you.

... also, to elaborate; ~는 것 같아요 can mean "to think" so with, "김치는 맛있는 것 같아요" you are saying, "I think kimchi is delicious."

맞아?

By the way, can't you say "처럼" with the verb "to look."; 바보처럼 보이다 (the meaning being the same as "같아")?

robert,

Good question. 좋은 질문이에요!

Look like + noun = ~같아 보이다

처럼 is also 'like' something, but it's not used with the verb 'to look' :) it's used with other verbs, though.

For example, 어린아이처럼 말하다 = to talk like a little child

학생처럼 옷을 입다 = to dress like a student :)

I was wondering... about "looking like a noun" like 학생 같아 보이다 ... we can get a similar meaning using the particle 처럼, right? or is 처럼 used in different context/way?

존 :)

Here,

같아 is from 같다

같다 --> 같 + 아 보이다

같다 means 'to be like'

as you know, 보이다 means "to be seen" or "to seem" so

~ 같아 보이다 becomes "to look like" :)

in the grammar we have : Noun + 같아 + 보이다

what is 같아 in this instance?

I am sure it's been covered somewhere, I did a search on the forums but didn't find anything.
