Since “몸매가 예쁘다” was part of the vocabulary, why didn’t the phrase “쭉쭉 봉봉” make in the lesson? Would any of the KC101 staff members like to explain this phrase?

Hello everybody,
I just wonder, if I could use 비행기 태우지마 in a more formal context like this one:
I get on the bus and I ask for a ticket in Korean, then the bus driver would tell me:
한국말 잘 하시네요…
Could I reply with
비행기 태우지마세요?
Would that fit into the situation or would the bus driver think: ah well, maybe I was too quick with my praise ?

Hi erich. From what I gather from this podcast I don’t think that reply is appropriate. The phrase, if I’m not mistaken, is for multiple or over the top complements that may embarrass the receiver. Being told “한국말 잘 하시네요” is only blush-worthy to the very sensitive. How about saying “뭘요” or “안 입니다” to show humility?
If this is wrong I hope someone jumps in and corrects me.

Yeah, I agree with James.
In that case, all you need is a little bit humbleness.
You may say as
뭘요 or 아닙니다 or 아주 조금 배웠어요.. etc.

착하다 is another one of those words that translates strangely between English and Korean. I’m glad you helped put it in context, and explain that if you cleaned your 하숙집 living space and were told by the 하숙집 아줌마 that you’re 착해, she’s not saying you’re “kind” necessarily, but rather that you did the right, good thing.
Ah, language nuance subtleties. Vive la difference…

If you want to say something similar to 비행기 태우지 마세요 but still use a little advanced vocab, you can say “과찬이십니다” or “과찬이세요” ^^ too.
과찬 = 과(extra) + 칭찬 ^^

It seems your cohosts are typical Korean girls. They don’t get American humor like when you jokingly praise yourself. They are so blunt and harsh to you. How do you keep up your confidence being around them so much. You are so 짱 for not feeling hurt.
Girls,
When an American guy talks about himself in a joking way, it is the same as a Korean guy feigning humility. Both are considered good in their respective cultures. So don’t be so hard on him.

What is the difference between using
도 to join consecutive nouns
and 과/와?
or 라고?
Wasn’t there a previous lesson that used 라고 in a similar way?
How do you know when to use which word?

To join consecutive nouns,
과/와, 하고, and 랑 can be used ^_^
-도 is to express “also”
ex)
나, 저 = me
나도, 저도 = me too
:)
And -(이)라고 is for ‘quotation’
ex)
-라고 하다 = to say ” ”
선생님이라고 하다 = to say that he/she is a teacher
And among 과/와, 하고, and 랑,
-하고 is the most neutral one,
랑 is more casual and 과/와 is more formal ^^
If you are not sure, please try making some sentences on your own here, and I’ll let you know if they are natural ^_^!!!
