I’d just like more of the same! But I wouldn’t feel that they all need to be fairy tales though. Maybe a day in the life of 김 or something.
I think this is an awesome idea! The timing seemed to be a little off in today’s lesson, but other than that, I absolutely loved it!!

wow, i really like the idea of reading along while hearing a story! i think it will help a lot with being able to read faster. like nan said, i think the timing was a little bit off - it would help a lot if the words didn’t move until you were done reading them (that way people could read along with you).
but i think this is a very good idea! i’ll be excited to see what other stories you have

We tried making the text move a little earlier before the voice ended for each sentence on purpose so that you can try to read faster the voice ^^ but we’ll put in a longer interval between two lines next time ^^!! Thank you very much once again for the feedback!!
This is a great idea. I have looked for audio books before but it seems that they aren’t popular in Korea, and short stories like this are ideal for learners.
The audio-only content was great but I didn’t like trying to follow the video as it went too quickly for me to read, and I’m sure others too. I think a pause feature would help here. Would that be possible to add for next time?

I believe you watched the swf, which is a flash video. We also have it in M4V format which plays in iTunes, iPod, or even Quicktime. All those will have the pause button there for you.

Everyone, thanks for the feedback about the timing being off - I just found out that the Flash file on site REALLY had a problem with the timing - the m4v file in the FEED should be fine

We had the text move along a little bit faster than the voice, but not THIS fast as it is in the flash video right now

but the last part is a bit too fast for me… do koreans really read at that kind of speed?
and for the first part of the video, is it possible to make the words all move up in one direction just like the rest? they’re now moving in all directions and i’m getting a teeny bit confused here!

1. Sure. I used the swf file, and I played it in KMPlayer.
2. The speed was ok. On the last round, I had to focus so much on reading that the content was in some places lost, I did manage to keep up.
3. Not that I can think of.
It’s still out of my league, but I wasn’t completely lost. The grammar points in the pdf file help a lot, even though there are so many (yet not enough XD) that it’s going to take a couple of sittings for me to get through them all.
And I’m confused, does the “X” stand for?
I really enjoyed this! Having a fairytale was good because then you’re at least somewhat familiar with the story, even if parts are changed or things simplified. I thought the speed was fine as well.
I liked how the display was English and 한글, then just English, then just 한글. I picked up a lot of words with it being that way.
I wasn’t too fond of the design though, on a purely aesthetic level I found it didn’t look too ‘professional’, but even having said that it still had the elements something like this requires: simple, easy to read no matter your screen res or eyesight (especially if you’re putting it on your iPod, I get the feeling this size of text works pretty much perfectly on an iPod display screen?), and with nothing to distract you from the words. So as usual whenever I give feedback, I end up having two opinions and sitting on the fence 8Dv
Btw, i prefer the youtube version, since i can pause it whenever i want and also because i like to know the length of the video.
I loved this so much!
I liked the clean, simple look of the video, which cut out unnecessary distractions. The pdf was brilliant too, which just enough grammar at convenient places.Thank you! Please let us have more lessons like this.

Is is just me or would a transcript of this lesson make life easier?
It’s not that I mind taking notes dictation style, but for reviewing purposes a transcript would come in handy.
Anyway, thank you for coming up with new and fun ways to make sense of this complicated language ^^

As for the transcript, you can definitely find that in the Lesson Notes PDF. There we have the lesson transcript as well as grammatical explanations to help make more sense of the story.

And the last part sounded unnaturally fast to me.. are you trying some speed-reading/speed-listening right-brain training method on us??
And although I like Hyunwoo’s voice as it is, would it be too much to ask if he reads it with more expression, like doing a real story-telling?
I really like this…I think it’s a great idea, and I like the mixing of with or without English, and the speed changes. I think each of the different versions followed well after the previous one.
Shan, I think 현우 read like that because it’s actually quite normal. Generally speaking, Koreans don’t tell stories using inflection. Narrations and voice overs of TV shows do the same thing. Men are especially known for doing it ~^ But yeah, expression would be a great thing!

wow - just up my alley. we gotta do more like this. I especially liked the watered down version of the story to make it easier to comprehend. seriously I feel that was a smart decision. I second Maxiewawa - how about just a simple story (and not just fairy tales)?
It would be great to see the first story be an original story that’s about 2/3 the length of the Pinocchio story. Something short, sweet, simple. Each story could get more difficult but start lower to catch more of the class.
I would also like to see it only in two parts next time - first part the same (screen shows korean and english) while the second part has only korean but in a larger font size.
oh, and the .pdf is gold! bravo!
as for the inflection statement, I actually appreciate the normalness of 현우 씨의 voice because the purpose of the lesson is to improve reading and listening skills - not story-telling skills. keep in mind that I work with kids and I am super-dramatic with my story telling - so it’s not that I’m hating on inflection, it’s just that for our purposes, I think a more standard voice inflection is more appropriate.
However, the speedrun version didn’t do so much for me as the first and second read-through.
All in all, great job KC101 teachers - we need this!
QUESTION: what is -로 all about? here’s an example sentence from the story. idk but i guess i missed a lesson if this was covered somewhere.

“으로/로” means a lot of things, but here, 나무로 means “using wood” or “with wood”
“으로/로” expresses a direction, but also expresses a tool or method
“DVD로 영화를 봐요” = I’m watching a movie on DVD.
“스푼으로 밥을 먹어요” = I’m eating with a spoon.
“KoreanClass101으로 공부해요” = I’m studying using KoreanClass101 ^^

It seems like a great idea, and well executed in the first lesson. I don’t really have any feedback… I think a lot of good ideas have already been given, and I can’t think of anything else.

OK, I just have one little translation question. I know now how to say “매일 공부하려고 노력하지만..” but I want to give the reason that I don’t always get around to it that is that I always muck around on the computer. Can someone help me? I need to tell my “adopted” (meaning she is like a lil sister) 여동생 this the next time she tries to tell me that I’m a bad student. It’s probably not a good excuse but.. oh well!

Newbie here:
I admit I skip ahead a lot and gravitate to the videos because that’s what works best with me, so I know this was designed for more advanced students.
But I would still like to see a transcript where the English portion is not translated into English grammar, but the actual literal word-for word translation in Korean grammar instead of the way an English speaking person sees it.
That way I can connect the dots with a direct correlation and I can also get more used to the sentence structure at a glance, even if I don’t get all the words, at least I can see the grammar in action on the English side.
