Korean work ethic is world renowned. Koreans work the most hours in the world. But is it really all work work work? There’s definitely water cooler talk, and in this Korean lesson, we’ll be hearing just that as we learn Korean with this free online Korean lesson! As we’ll be listening in on a story of what happened to our Korean office employee over the weekend, we’ll be going over a logical connector, which gives reasons. And after listening, remember to stop by KoreanClass101.com and leave us a post!

한국어를 공부했더니, 너무 재밌어요! 여러분은요?
(I studied Korean and it was so fun! How about you?)

avatar Yang says:

어제 밤에 난 잤더니, 오늘 기분이 좋아요. Sometimes I’m cranky when I don’t get enough sleep.

근데 난 좀 칠문이 있어요.

~ㄹ/을지하고 ~ㄴ/은지 다음이 뭐예요? 이효리 “U-go-girl” 을 들을 때, ‘뭐? 실수이죠?’ 고 생학했은데, 내 친구들은 좋다고 했어요. 그러지만, 다름이 아직도 몰라요.

avatar Jacqueline (쟈클린) says:

what is the ending used in this word (더니): 공부했더니 ?
when is it used?

avatar Marcus says:

한 달도안 러면뱎에 안 먹으면 죽지 않알까요? 하긴…

라면을 먹었더니 죽었다…

avatar Marcus says:

라면밖에 안 먹으면…

avatar Sarah says:

thank you for conjugating the verbs in the discussion during the lesson! It is very helpful to hear the present, past & future tenses…

avatar Daniel K says:

Jacqueline :) 더니 is the lesson’s grammar point. It’s hard to explain, but the hosts of the podcast do a good job!

Great grammar point, by the way… It’s one I’ve never encountered before! But yeah, I can definitely see how it would be useful when telling a story…

avatar Jacqueline (쟈클린) says:

Oops thanks Daniel K ^^
I’ll have to listen to it again
That’s what happens when you do many things at the same time such as listening to kclass101 podcast, eating , surfing other web pages, etc…. ㅋㅋㅋ
앞으로는 korean podcast + eating만 and nothing more   ㅋㅋㅋ

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

ㅎㅎㅎㅎㅎ Jacqueline :)

KoreanClass101 방송 들으면서 너무 여러가지 하면 안 돼 +_+ ㅋㅋㅋㅋ ㅋ 그래도 괜찮아. 이렇게 코멘트를 써 줬으니까~ ㅎㅎ

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Yang

이효리의 “U-go-girl”에서 you hear a lot of -을지, -은지, right? :)

“-지” is often translated into English as “whether or not” and -을지 is about the future and -ㄴ/는지 about the present, and -았/었/였는지 is about the past :) You can learn more about the -ㄴ/는지 conjugation if you listen to the Intermediate Lesson #11.

http://www.koreanclass101.com/2008/03/06/intermediate-lesson-11-leaving-a-voicemail/

:)

What 이효리 says in the lyrics -

오늘은 또 어떤 옷을 입어야할지
머리는 또 어떻게 만져야 좋을지
이건 어떠니 또 저건 어떠니
고민 고민 하지마 Girl~

=
what kind of clothes you’ll have to wear today,
what kind of hairstyle you’ll have to do today,
how about this, how about that,
don’t worry about those things, (Girl)

So you can see that -지 is for expressing “how something is/will be/was” or “whether or not something is/will be/was in a state” or “what is/will be/was” and etc : )

I hope this helps!!

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Marcus :)

한달 동안 라면만 먹으면 ㅋㅋ 죽지는 않겠지만
얼굴 색깔이 라면 색깔이 될 것 같아요 ㅎㅎㅎ

않알까요? –> 않을까요?

Sarah :)

Good to hear that it was helpful ^^ 도움이 되었다니 다행이에요!!!

avatar Matthew says:

Great lesson again. I was able to use this construction the vey next day when talking to a Korean fried, so good result there.

I have a question though. The construction relates to the past (”because it was … then”). Is there a similar construstion for the future (”because it will … then”) or do we have to use rul/ul kot inikka? (Apologies for no Hangul - my keyboard has no Hangul on it).

avatar 선현우 says:

That’s great, Matthew!! 멋져요!!

Similar constructions for the future can depend on the situation, but just to give you a list,

1. -을 테니까 -ㄹ 거야.
2. -면 -ㄹ 거야.
3. -기 때문에 -ㄹ 거야.

Could you please give me an example of what you would want to say in English? ^^
