Korean students are often stressed because of the amount of pressure put on them. Korean high school students often have to study until 10 o’clock at night and can often get overwhelmed with their studies. The parents in this conversation are trying to lift up his spirits by buying him a souvenir while on a business trip.
In this lesson, we’ll be going over the Korean grammatical phrase 것 같다 (geot gatda), which is used to make assumptions, or also used to soften someone’s language. Learn this Korean grammatical structure and essential vocabulary words and phrases as you learn Korean with KoreanClass101.com! 여러분은 언제 한국에 올 것 같아요? ^^
(Everyone, when do you think you will come to Korea?)
i dont know when i’ll be able to go to korea
but i have fun listening to you guys
몰아요… 한국에 가고 싶어요… But my kids are still young, so it’s a bit hard to travel to a country where we can hardly communicate..it would be too adventurous for us I think!
It’s nice to know that both 준수 and 미현 have been to Singapore!
This is a very useful lesson, thanks again! The detailed vocab list was very useful, as was the Hanja table. 기념품 sounds very much like 纪念品 in Chinese, just like 화장품 sounds very much like 化妆品.
I’ve got one question. Why is it that the sentence about the son being stressed is 받는 것 같아요 rather than 받을 것 같아요?
Did the KC101 성주 write the script, by the way? Maybe he’s hinting he wants some souvenirs!
아니카… You had it right
하나도 안 귀찮아요..
한국에 언제 갈 것 같아요?
Bouks 진짜예요? 내일 한국 가요?
Jacqueline 한국에 갈 것 같아요?
Shan I didn’t write the script! Hehe… the staff just wants to give me presents
The difference between the two sentences is that 받는 것 같아요 is that he seems to be receiving stress. and 받을 것 같아요 is that he seems like he will receive stress.
는 것 같아 is referring to something that is happening now
을 것 같아 is referring to something that will likely happen in the future.
For Example:
비 오는 것 같아 - I think it’s raining (now).
비 올 것 같아 - I think it will rain (soon).
Hope this helps!

한국에 꼭 꼭 꼭 꼭~~~! 오세요 ^_^ 환영해요 ㅎㅎ
Shan,
KC101 성주 씨는 너무 일을 열심히 해요 . 그래서 기념품을 꼭 줘야 돼요
Keith - Thanks for the explanation! I’m afraid to ask if there are more conjugations for 것 같다! It’s hard enough to remember these two and not get them mixed up!
Bouks - 울지마세요! 괜찮아요! 저도 시간이 없어요.. 돈은..can be earned!
Shan ![]()
맞아요. 돈은 벌 수 있어요 ㅎㅎ 그런데 시간이 걸려요 ^^
(That’s right. Money can be earned ^^ but it takes time.. hehe)
Bouks, 저도 프랑스에 가고 싶어요 ^^
(I want to go to France too ^_^)
Is today’s grammar point formed the same way as the one from Intermediate Lesson 1?
Maxie - This Grammar Point should be in lesson Intermediate 17, and Idioms and Phrases 2. If you take a look at the grammar bank, you can use see the related lessons where the same grammar point came out
Keith and 현우
I don’t know yet when exactly, but as soon as I do, I sure will brag about it ![]()
꼭 꼭 꼭~~~만나십시오
