You have been visited a few Korean museums today, a temple, and a park in Korea. The sights in Korea are always so breathtaking. You try to visit at least one new place in Korea each month. However, this time it seems there is a good-looking Korean gentleman that has the same Korean sightseeing itinerary that you do! He has been at each place you have been in Korea today…hmm. Ooh, here he comes! He asks you in Korean, “I saw you around…what did you think was prettiest today?” Shyly, you respond in Korean that you always enjoy everything in Korea, but today you thought, “the Korean temple was prettiest.” As he gazes into your eyes, he replies in Korean, I agree the temples are very pretty, but “I think the sights right here are the prettiest!” That’s so cheesy it just might work!

Keith씨의 사촌이랑 저랑 이름이 같네요.
저도 이름이 김성수인데요 ㅋㅋㅋ
하지만 저희집 돌림자는 “수”예요.
남자형제들은 뒷글자가 수,
여자형제들은 앞글자가 수.
최근에 지어진 이름일 수록 돌림자를 잘 안쓰는 것 같아요.
Wednesday at 1:28 pm
Keith, 1월 30일 개방했어요. 지금 아마 DVD 있어요. DVD들이 자막 있어서 더 좋아해요. 아마 전지현이 나랑 DVD방에 가고 싶어요… 하하하 ^^

Sorry, I couldn’t really catch the part about when to use “내가”.
So it’s not right to say “나 더 예뻐”?
Also, why is it “내가” and not “나가”?
Monday at 7:58 pm
Manyakumi 씨… 김성수는 아주 좋은 이름인 거 같아요. ^^ 사촌형이 여자들한테 인기 많아요. Manyakumi 씨도 그런가요?
브라이언 씨… ㅋㅋㅋ DVD방… ㅋㅋ
Shan 씨.. This is getting into some heavy linguistics, but when you’re comparing something with 더, you need to have that subject marking particle. That marks the thing that is better or more than (something). Of course if you use it without the subject marking particle, it is understandable, but it is a bit awkward.
And it’s 내가 and not 나가 I think because it’s easier? I’m not sure to be honest!
Tuesday at 12:47 am
Thanks Keith for the explanation.
In what other circumstances would one use 내가, apart from when making comparisons?
Tuesday at 2:42 am
Shan
Good question!
Apart from when making comparions,
you can use “내가” in compound sentences
(1) “나는 어제 Keith를 만났어.”
= I met Keith yesterday.
(2) “내가 어제 만난 친구는 Keith야.”
= The friend that I met yesterday is Keith.
In the first sentence, “나” is the topic/subject
but in the 2nd sentence “친구” is the topic/subject, right?
So in the 2nd one, ‘나’ becomes a subject but not the topic of the entire sentence
so you use “내가 만난 친구”

저는 SE7EN보다 비가 더 멋지던데 what it means?
Tuesday at 10:37 am
hello d,
I’ll translate what you wrote above,
“I think Rain is cooler than SE7EN.”
That’s it!
cheers,
Tim
Tuesday at 6:27 pm
can you explain the grammatical construction of 멋지던데 ? what is 보다?
Tuesday at 7:01 pm
by the way, thanks for your help, Tim.
Wednesday at 11:03 am
Hello d,
Okay… let’s make it quick and simple!
Let’s compare the explanation with an English sentence.
“A is better than B”
1. “A” is a subject => you need to attach ’subject particles’ right after “A”; so it becomes “A” + 가 => A가
2. “than” can translate into 보다; therefore, “than B” => B보다
3. “better” can translate into 좋다 [jota] “good, better, nice”
Therefore all together, “A is better than B” translates into…
A가 + B보다 + 좋다 => A가 B보다 좋다.
then what about this - “Coffee is better than water”?
1. 커피 [keopi] “coffee” + 가 => 커피가
2. 물 [mul] “water” + 보다 [boda] “than” => 물보다
3. 좋다 [jota] “is better”
Therefore altogether, 커피가 물보다 좋다 “coffee is better than water”
I hope this helps, (if you need any help for Korean grammatical point(s), please visit Koreanclass101.com and leave your question(s) there on our FORUM!)
cheers,
Tim

I’d have to say they’re both 여뻐, but if I had to choose i’d probably pick 김 태희, (but i think 신민아 should be in that list too
) She was adorable in the drama ‘My Girlfriend is a Gumiho’.

I hope this helps. Thank you.

Expansion with audio typo
쌍둥이이에요.
Monday at 10:19 am
Hello Colin,
Thanks for letting know this.
Actually, the spelling is right. 이에요 is the verb meaning ‘to be’ (formal). People usually make it short as 예요 (yeyo), but the original form is 이에요.
So, 쌍둥이 + 이에요 is right. Or you can write it as 쌍둥이예요 (not 에요)
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
