Today is 부처님 오신 날 (or 석가탄신일) in Korea :-) It's an exciting day as is, but a lot of people here are also VERY excited about the fact that LAST monday was a holiday because it was Children's Day and THIS monday is also a holiday because Buddha's Birthday(18th of April in the lunar calendar) fell on Monday this year :-) A 3-day weekend in a row! :-)

My first week in Korea was 부처님 오신 날. We went to a temple where the monks treated us to a meal of vegetariain 비빔밥 . It was great but a bit overwhelming.

Bouks 하하 :-) yeah, Korean spelling(맞춤법) is not the easiest. At least, it's easy to read :D

Hyunwoo - heh heh! Well, I tried. I meant 왕자, I picked it up phonetically from watching all those episodes of Jumong  This is my first time to see it spelled out.

Korean spelling is almost as hard as foreign students say English spelling is! (I used to tutor foreign students in college for their TOEFL test.)

Bouks :-)

If you meant to say "Prince" it's 왕자, and if you want to say "Emperor" that's 황제 :-) ㅎㅎ 황자 is maybe the combination of the two ? :-)

Theresa :-)

Shan, that's right :) Children definitely feel like it's "their day" on Children's day. All the gifts that they get and the special treatment, they feel really good about it all.

Theresa, whens your birthday? Got any plans? ;)

Bouks - you almost spelled my name! 성주... but I'm no 공주... ㅎㅎㅎ

Jacqueline - it's really nice to have all the days in one month. 편해요 ^^

You can tell I haven't mastered the Korean keyboard yet, even though I've improved somewhat!

Hmmm I'm not sure I would trust my nine-year-old 송주 to mess around in the kitchen cooking me something  But she is a fantastic sketch artist, so she should stick with that

The Teacher's Day tradition of pinning carnations on teachers sounds very nice (as long as you don't stick them with the pin by accident )

Thanks for this lesson, great insights to Korean culture! It was a lot of fun too listening to you guys bantering and laughing, I think the dynamics amongst the hosts are great. Makes learning a little less tedious!

I think it's a great idea to make children's day a national holiday. After all, kids ought to enjoy their parents' company on their special day, right?
