There’s not a more convenient way to learn Korean with free online Korean lessons than with KoreanClass101.com! In today’s lesson, we’re stopping by a Korean convenience store(편의점) to pick up some typical Korean food. We’re hungry and ready to get some cheap Korean food on the go! There’s may be a lot of similarities with convenience stores with your country, but there are some things very specific to Korean convenience stores. So remember to watch our video and see the food that we’re talking about! And after watching, remember to stop by KoreanClass101.com and leave us a post!

Marcus says:

The 닭덮밥 looks intersting…but I’m not a fan of any type of 밥 that you cook in the microwave—it tastes like plastic!

Does 김치 now come in vacuum packs in Korea and no longer in glass jars? Does it taste better?

avatar
Shan says:

The 삼각김밥 looks really interesting. Do people really go to the 편의점 to buy microwavable food regularly?

Thanks for this lesson, it was very interesting. It was like a mini culture class too.. if I ever have the opportunity to go to Korea, I would look for a 편의점 just to get a 삼각김밥 and a free drink!

Marcus :-)
I agree that nothing can beat home-cooked 밥!! Hehe :D
And I see more 김치 coming in plastic bags these days than in glass jars. :-) When I DO see some 김치 in glass jars displayed, which is not so often these days, I kinda feel like the glass jars are being wasted for such small amounts of 김치 … hehe :D

Shan :-)
” Do people really go to the 편의점 to buy microwavable food regularly? ” —-> YES!! :-) especially those who live alone :-) And it’s often cheaper than restaurants … so a lot of people who don’t want the luxury of going and sitting in a restaurant alone just go to a 편의점 and grab one or two 삼각김밥 with a drink :-) and it costs like .. 2000원, which is very cheap compared to a regular meal which is on average around 4000원 5000원 :-)

well, relatively speaking.

I really like these video vocab lessons. Keep them coming.

My compliments to the team putting the video together. It really comes out smooth. It keeps my interest and is easy to watch!

삼각김밥 is great… it’s one of the first things I was told about when I came to Korea: if you ever need some food that is halfway between a meal and a snack, and that’s really cheap, get a 삼각김밥! My favourite flavour is the 비빔밥 ones.

Keith says:

Bouks…
(Honey Pumpkin porridge is really good!! It’s just porridge, but it’s very sweet, and it really warms you up. If you have a chance, be sure to try it out!)

Jason - Video Vocab
(We’re glad you like the Video Vocab… If there’s anything you’d like to study, please leave us a request :) )

avatar
Keith says:

Daniel - I love it too :) Especially because 김이 너무 맛있으니깐. ^^ hehehe… I used to eat breakfast with just 김 and 밥 with nothing else in it. And having the other things in, are a nice bonus as well :)

Jeff (rooster) says:

haha!! ….melted cheese….LOL i laughed so hard, cause you sounded so serious

OHHHHH and the alovera drink is soooo good, i always go to 한남재인 (the giant korean market close to my house) and i get like 6 bottles…and all teh koreans look at me like  ….what the heck?!?!?!

avatar
Jeff (rooster) says:

btw

i would be cool if you guys did a video vocab of like school, or a classroom or something cause that would be really helpful…although i think im one of the few people here who are in school!!

avatar
Jeff (Javis) says:

Those 삼각김밥 aren’t in the fridge… I hope they sell that day :???:

I think the tastiest thing in the picture is probably the 참지죽, but my favorite thing to buy from Korean convenience stores was 우동.

avatar
Keith says:

I think melted cheese will sell well!

I think that’s a good idea too. Have a picture video vocab in a classroom will help a lot of our listeners out :) Don’t worry Jeff, you’re not the only listener who’s a student :)

avatar
Charles says:

wow that was so cool.
I would buy 삼각김밥, 메추리알 and 새우장 like 3 or 4 times a week!!
such found memories.
now I know what 매실주스 is !!! alright!

avatar
Charles says:

avatar
Marie says:

Anyway, since I’ve been living here in Korea and become quite accustomed to Korean culture, and have studied Korean through a variety of methods, I wanted to say that this website provides some of the freshest lessons f I’ve come across. I was holding my breath while the browser was loading hoping there was a new intermediate lesson, and I found that and this video vocab.

Jeff (rooster)

Haha :-) 6 bottles of 알로에 주스 … I was in a convenience store today and thought of this lesson, :D and I was thinking… “what haven’t I bought in a while?” and bought an 알로에 주스 too! Everyone should try the 알로에 주스 :-) ㅎㅎㅎ

Jeff (Javis)

Yeah the 삼각김밥 are usually sold only for like 30 hours, so I think it’s safe :-) but it’s always good to check the date and time :)

Charles :-)

ㅎㅎㅎ like… 메로나 and other melon-flavored ice creams, right? Those 메론 아이스크림 were really a HUGE hit 5 years ago… hehe, I remember.

avatar
선현우(Hyunwoo Sun) says:

Marie :-)

Theresa :-)

avatar
선현우(Hyunwoo Sun) says:

alice,
맞아요, 집 근처의 작은 가게들 중에서 저렴한 곳을 한 곳 ‘뚫어 놓으면’(=찾아서, 단골로 만들어 놓으면) 편의점에 가지 않아도 항상 필요한 것을 얻을 수 있죠. :-) 저도 집 근처에 그런 가게가 하나 있어요. 그런데 가끔씩, 인스턴트 음식을 사 먹고 싶을 때는 편의점에 갈 수 밖에 없어요 ^^;;

avatar
alicetowa says:

Keith

avatar
선현우(Hyunwoo Sun) says:

alice,

avatar
Keith says:

Mmmm…. ice-cream, and 메론바…. 50%할인해서….

I wish they sold that kind of food in American convenience stores.
hahahaha kleptomaniac!
Thanks for the korean lesson guys!

Jacqueline (쟈클린) says:

I have a question that is not related to this lesson ^^

I saw in a korean drama that the driver’s seat was located on the right side and i saw a report of a korean singer in seoul and the driver’s seat was located in the left.
Does korea allow to use both type of cars? i thought that was prohibited everywhere ^^

avatar
Jeff (Javis) says:

Maybe the drama was taking place somewhere where the driver’s side is on the right, or maybe it was a Japanese import?

avatar
선현우(Hyunwoo Sun) says:

Hyun W. :-)

Thanks for the comment! We hope you’ll enjoy our future lessons as well! Thanks!

Jacqueline :-)

Oh, nice observation !!
Actually, the driver’s seat for most cars in Korea is located on the left side :-) but it is easily permitted to import or bring a car that has the driver’s seat on the right side too. So in Korea, if you see a car that has the driver’s seat on the right side, the car has been privately shipped to Korea or imported without converting the position of the seats :-)

avatar
선현우(Hyunwoo Sun) says:

Jeff,

avatar
Jacqueline (쟈클린) says:

Hyunwoo,Thanks for the Info !
Jeff (Javis), the drama was filmed in korea.

I wish we had convenience stores in Germany… the only stores here that are open 24 hours are gas stations, and while you can get a lot of food and drinks, it’s really really expensive :(

avatar
선현우(Hyunwoo Sun) says:

Sebastian :)
