It would take hours and hours to discuss the difference between the Korean and the Japanese cultures ^^ but like you said the two cultures share a lot of things in common. It’s really difficult, whatever conclusion I get by comparing the two cultures, the exact opposite turns out to be true, too. Haha.

Korea seems to have more interest in western religions and english and has it’s own holidays and beliefs, foods etc of course, but overall they seem very similiar to me.

Keep in mind I’ve only visited Japan once, while I’ve lived in Korea three years, so I may be mistaken on some things..

“Noun + 이란” is short for “Noun + 이라는 것은” and it means “The thing called NOUN is…” and it’s a nice way to start a sentence when you’re talking about something and expressing your thoughts about it, especially some abstract things.

For example,

약속이란 중요한 거예요.
= Promises are important.

You could say, 약속은 중요한 거예요, but by saying 약속이란 중요한 거예요, you give it the nuance of “You know, what we call 약속 is really important.”

And for 마다 ,

마다 means, yes, every time

일요일마다 = every Sunday
학교에 갈 때마다 = every time I go to school
아침마다 = every morning

I have a few questions about this one when you have some time.

First in the sentence 여행이란 참 좋은 것이구나’라는 생각을 많이 하게 되었어요. what does 이란 mean?

Second in the sentence 기회가 될 때마다, 즉 다시 말해서 돈이 충분히 생길 때마다 하려고 노력하고 있어요. What does the 마다 mean? Everytime? I think I learned abou this one before somewhere but I’ve forgotten.

7월이 되면 제 계약은 끝난데 여행 떠나려고 해요. 일본에 가 보고 싶지만 그 다음에 어디로 여행 떠날지 잘 몰라요. 아마도 가족과 친구에게 방문하러 캐나다에 돌아갈 거에요. 토론토에 가지 않으면 어머니께서 잔소리 받을 거라서 반드시 캐나다에 돌아가려고 해요. 그 다음에… ^^
