Let’s play a game. Conjugate the verb in the last post. Then leave one verb for someone else to conjugate. All in standard politeness level.
1st Verb: 가다 (gada) - to go
Monday at 8:47 pm
ㅋㅋ 정민이 책을 읽으면서 맥주를 마셨네… 설 역시 이상한 것 같아
그리고…. 보너스 오디오 너무 눌렀어
Monday at 10:47 pm
가다 –> 가요
2nd Verb: 팔다- To Sell
Monday at 11:57 pm
A thousand thanks for the conjugation explanations !!! I’ve been waiting for that for what seems like forever !
verbs ? hmm…
팔다 ~> 팔어요 ??? (not ending in a vowel or anything…)
배우다 (to learn) ?
Tuesday at 1:13 am
:-)
PetiteClaire, 팔다 is conjugated as ‘팔아요’,
but in fact, a lot of people say ‘팔어요’ too. hehe.
배우다 –> 배워요 !!
How about this one, everyone?
3rd verb :
놀다(to play) –>
Tuesday at 1:14 am
petiteclaire,
it’s 팔아요 with 아 not 어.
Tuesday at 1:15 am
hehe, Jacqueline, I was 1 minute fast. (제가 1분 빨랐어요)
Tuesday at 1:19 am
Hehe I love the bonus track too!!
Tuesday at 3:16 am
ok, just to make this clear :
This is 아 and not 어 because ㅏ is the last vowel in the verb stem EVEN THOUGH the verb stem doesn’t end in a vowel but in a consonant ? That was completely fuzzy in my mind… can I deduce from that that the rules from the PDF apply even if the verb stem ends in a consonant ?
Tuesday at 5:30 am
현우 haha, we were writing at the same time, but you answered faster
Let me answer your verb ^^:
놀다 —-> 놀아요
4th Verb:
열다 — To Open
Tuesday at 8:45 am
petiteclaire, the rule in the PDF usually applies, with a few exceptions, what I suggest is please keep practicing with new sentences and make a lot of mistakes and get them corrected - that’s the best way to master verbs, I think
Jacqueline, 하하. 맞아요!
4th Verb:
열다 –> 열어요
5th Verb:
쓰다 –> to write (I know this can be tricky hehe)
Tuesday at 2:06 pm
써요.
6th verb:
듣다 - to listen
by the way on a sidenote, i got my cyworld already!!! thanks!
Tuesday at 2:40 pm
Yo, yo, 요!
Today’s PDF is really good. I’ve pored over so many Chinese language Korean textbooks trying to work those rules out, and in none of them is it explained so succinctly. I’m off to the tattoo parlor to get it tattooed on my left forearm, to help me remember it.
Just kidding!
Q: If I see a verb in its 고 form, do I just remove the 고 to find the verb stem?
Tuesday at 3:06 pm
Hyunwoo, thanks for the answer. I also believe that trial and error is the best way to learn.
However, on this one point, the PDF isn’t clear (sorry …)
How do things stand for consonant-ending verbs ? Is there a special rule ? The only examples of consonant-ending verbs, both in the PDF and in the verb conjugation chart in the learning center do not have either ㅏ or ㅗ in their verb stem. So naturally they get 어, but there is no way to infer from that if the rule applies because of the stem vowel (even though there’s a consonant after it) or because the stem doesn’t not end in ㅏor ㅗ but in something else.
Judging from your and Jacqueline’s comment, and also from the verb 놀다’s conjugation, I guess it must be a vowel problem .
So… what about consonant-ending verbs ?
If I get things right, 듣다 should be
듣어요 ???
Maxiewawa, cheer up !!! There is no Korean grammar book worht talking about in french… I even once tried listening to the NHK Korean language course for japanese speakers…. I don’t even want to talk about it…
Tuesday at 3:21 pm
Petiteclaire!
Actually, verb conjugations are only dependent on the verb stem’s last vowel. It doesn’t matter if the verb stem ends in a consonant. You have to read into what’s going into the vowel.
And actually 듣다 (deutda) - to listen, has an irregular conjugation.
들어요 would be the actual conjugation. With some verbs that end in ㄷ, when they are followed be a vowel conjugation (i.e. what’s in today’s PDF), the ㄷ then becomes ㄹ. But I wouldn’t recommend tacking irregular verb conjugations if you’re just starting on regular conjugations
And Maxie - verbs that have have 고 attached to the end of them are generally in their verb stem.
What are you looking for or working on?
Next Verb: 지우다 (to erase)
Tuesday at 3:23 pm
Yeah !!! thanks for the answer !
Tuesday at 3:55 pm
지우다 –> 지워요
그 다움에: 훔지다 - to steal
Tuesday at 3:57 pm
whoops… 훔치다
Tuesday at 4:32 pm
훔쳐요.
my sonsaengnim told me that it comes naturally after awhile.
ㅗ, ㅏ = +아
everything else = +어
하다 = 해요
다음 단어는 .. 보다.
Tuesday at 4:33 pm
보다 = to see. sorry missed out the definition in prev post.
Wednesday at 9:32 am
hey, i was wondering if you could explain the difference between 이,가 and 은,는
thanks :3
Wednesday at 10:47 am
Theresa, 맞아요!(That’s right!) it comes naturally after a while of practice
보다 –> 봐요.
Next Verb: 읽다 !!
Wednesday at 10:49 am

포고싶다.

Thanks so much for this lesson. I learn so many interesting things, like 과자. I live in Korea and have always been confused by the different words for snacks. 고맙습니다!
Wednesday at 5:20 am
‘뭐예요’ and ‘뭐 해요’ sound very much alike!
Wednesday at 9:45 am
Carlo
맞아요! ㅎㅎㅎ
뭐예요 and 뭐 해요 sound almost the same if you say them really fast. Hehe.
Wednesday at 3:39 pm
Hi,
wow. Conjugation is very hard. Until lesson 24 it was much fun and very easy. No. 25 und 26 are also fun, but soooo difficult. I had to listen to them over ten times now and still I don’t know if I will ever understand conjugation. So many 例外s (sorry, don’t know the word in english). Maybe I should just go on. Thanks so much, it is so fun listen to you guys.
보고 싶어요??
Saturday at 8:42 pm
Miree
same here, though it’s a lot clearer after this lesson.
例外 is ‘exception’,by the way. Good to know I’m not the only one still listening to these older lessons.
Monday at 11:38 am
Miree
Ann
For your reference, 例外 in Korean is 예외
And yes, conjugation is difficult, but it’s something that you have to deal with in every new language you learn, so 화이팅!!! ^^
Monday at 2:36 pm
That’s true. In the meantime I finished Beginners Lesson First Season but I think I should start again, just to be sure.
I know that German is even more difficult to learn because of its conjugation. For all German learners: 화이팅!
Ann: Why do you study Korean? And why do you know Japanese?
Tuesday at 10:45 pm

This isn’t the place for this moan but can’t you remove that aggressive advertising banner that pops up everytime I enter Kor101. Once we’ve signed up do we have to be constantly subjected this form of invasion. Kor 101 is a fantastic site but that bloody advert stresses me out and often prevents me signing in or pops up just as I’m about to finish typing my login. Maybe I am doing something wrong and could prevent it popping up but this is now the second time I’ve been directed away from my studying to moan about this subject.

Sunday at 4:31 am
보고 싶다–> 보고 싶어요
I know that Miree wrote the answer before but nobody said if it was ok or not, and nor wrote the next verb so…
Verb 13: 자다 - to sleep
Usually the comments are very useful but in this lesson was really useful and I hope we can continue to grow!
And…
읽다 is “to read”?
보고 싶다 what does it mean?
Sunday at 8:56 pm

I can’t get Beginner Lesson #24 on a computer at a PC방.
Tuesday at 4:19 pm
Hi everyone, thanks a lot for your work, learning while listening to you is very very funny and your explanations are really clear, keep it up!
Now I have a question, on the PDF the explanations are written in hangul…I have started just a few weeks ago with beginner lessons and in the beginning I didnt bother about learning how to write every vowel and consonant and how to put them one under the other and all this stuff. So do you recommed to start learning hangul writing from the beginning at the same time as other things?
Bye
Tuesday at 4:49 pm
I don’t work here but I would definitely recommend you do that. Mainly because it’s so easy. It’s just an alphabet, you can learn all characters in a couple of hours. You may need to go to sleep for a while and tomorrow you will suddenly know all characters. It will make studying Korean so much easier, I would say it’s really worth the effort. There are some (not many) exceptions to the pronunciation of characters depending on their location in the word/syllable, but you will find those out over time.
Wednesday at 6:22 am
^Thanks a lot for your advice, I thought it would be more difficult but in 1 our of practice I can read quite fast…now I need to learn more Korean to be able to understand what I have just read xDD
Once again, thanks, gamsahamnida!
Wednesday at 9:15 am
Thank you for your comment.
I’m Jaehwi from Koreanclass101.com
As Jeroen recommended, I would also like to recommend you to learn Hangul first, If you learn it while writing the characters, I believe that you will learn Korean faster because it is very effective way to learn new characters; writing.
We have hangul lessons under the video lessons. I hope this lesson would help you learn how to read and write Hangul.
If you have any question, please let us know.
Thank you 감사합니다.
