INTRODUCTION
Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다.
Keith: Keith here. No Thanks. 자, 우리 지난번에 어디까지 얘기했죠?
Seol: 소연이 지갑을 잃어 버렸고 민호가 지갑을 주웠어요.
Keith: 지갑을 주웠고 인성한테 부탁했잖아요.
Seol: 네. 인성한테 이거 좀 대신 돌려줘라고 부탁했어요.
Keith: 왜 그렇게 부탁했죠?
Seol: 사진 속의 주인공 소연의 얼굴이 예쁘지 않아서.
Keith: 너무 못됐어.
Seol: 못됐어!
Keith: What’s that word again?
Seol: 못됐다
Keith: And this kind of means to do wrong.
Seol: 못됐다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 못됐다 [natural native speed]
Keith: 그래서 예를 들면?
Seol: Keith, 못됐어.
Keith: 어떻게요?
Seol: 맨날 나한테 장난치니까 Keith 못됐어.
Keith: So I did wrong because I am joking around with you?
Seol: Kind of.
Keith: Kind of. 근데 민호는 못됐죠?
Seol: 민호는 정말 못됐어요.
Keith: 왜냐면 사진 보고 안 돌려준다고
Seol: 안 예쁘다고
Keith: 안 예쁘다고
Seol: 못됐어.
Keith: Just because he saw a picture and she is not very pretty 그래도 돌려 줘야죠.
Seol: He will regret. 후회할 거예요.
Keith: 이번 대화는 뭐에 대해서 얘기하는 거예요?
Seol: 전화로 민호가 소연이에게 지갑을 돌려주기 위해서 전화를 해서 시간과 날짜를 정하는 거예요.
Keith: So let’s listen into this phone conversation between 민호 and 소연.

Seol: 네, 이 사람은 못됐어요.
VOCAB LIST
Keith: Okay let’s get into the vocab. The first word we have is
Seol: 주인
Keith: Owner.
Seol: 주인 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 주인 [natural native speed]
Keith: Next word we have is
Seol: 드리다
Keith: To offer or to give.
Seol: 드리다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 드리다 [natural native speed]
Keith: Next is
Seol: 바쁘다
Keith: To be busy.
Seol: 바쁘다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 바쁘다 [natural native speed]
Keith: Next we have
Seol: 오후
Keith: Afternoon.
Seol: 오후 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 오후 [natural native speed]
Keith: Next is
Seol: 됐다
Keith: To be done, to be finished.
Seol: 됐다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 됐다 [natural native speed]
Keith: And lastly, we have a phrase
Seol: 뭐야
Keith: What is it?
Seol: 뭐야 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 뭐야 [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: Let’s talk about the vocab words a little bit. 첫 번째 단어는 뭐예요?
Seol: 주인
Keith: Owner 집주인은 뭐예요?
Seol: House owner.
Keith: And we use this as landlord 집주인 house owner, the owner of the house, landlord. 또 어떤 주인이 있어요?
Seol: 이 차 주인
Keith: The owner of the car. 원래 명사 있고 주인. Noun and owner. When we have that, it’s the owner of that noun.
Seol: 원래는 이 가운데 ‘의’가 들어가야 되는데 이게 빠져도 의미가 통하니까 지갑주인 차주인 이렇게 명사랑 명사랑도 쓰여요.
Keith: Let’s have it the way it’s supposed to be.
Seol: 지갑의 주인
Keith: Wallet owner but we can drop that. So it becomes
Seol: 지갑주인
Keith: And our next example is
Seol: 차의 주인
Keith: Cars owner where we can drop that 의 and it just means car owner. Okay 두 번째 단어는 뭐예요?
Seol: 바쁘다
Keith: This is to be busy. This would technically be a beginner word but we are going to go over the conjugation of it because it’s an irregular conjugation. What’s the verb stem?
Seol: 바쁘
Keith: How do we conjugate it?
Seol: 바빠요. 바쁘다의 쁘는 conjugation할 때 어로 바뀌어서 ‘바뻐’로 되야 되는데 앞에 있는 아 발음의 영향으로 ‘바빠요’로 되는 거예요.
Keith: Usually in the last vowel of the verb stem, if it’s anything but 오 or 아 you change the conjugation to 어 but here it’s influenced by the first syllable 바 and because of that vowelㅏ we conjugate that second syllable into the same thing 바빠요. Can we have a couple of examples?
Seol: 나쁘다
Keith: When we conjugate it
Seol: 나빠요
Keith: Let’s take a look at the typical conjugation.
Seol: 예쁘다
Keith: That ㅡ that’s the last vowel and then here, that first syllable does not start with a ㅏ. So what’s that conjugation now?
Seol: 예뻐요
Keith: That conjugation becomes 어. Okay 우리 다음 단어는 뭐예요?
Seol: 됐다
Keith: 근데 우리 첫 번째 레슨에 이거 했죠?
Seol: 네, 이미 했어요.
Keith: 복습하기 위해서 let’s go over it again. Okay so 됐다 once again means to be finished, to be done but we also use it for
Seol: 거절할 때도 쓰여요.
Keith: 짜장면 먹으러 갑시다.
Seol: 됐어요. Was I mean?
Keith: 근데 그렇게 말하면 제가 기분이 나쁘잖아요.
Seol: 네.
Keith: 이거는 원래 안 좋은 의미 아니지만 그 상대방은 그렇게 들으면 기분이 안 좋아요.
Seol: 미안해요.
Keith: So yeah the meaning of it is not necessarily bad but when you say this to somebody, they don’t feel too well. It’s a bad connotation kind of like I don’t need it. So don’t ask me.
Seol: 저한테 짜장면 먹자고 하지 말아요. Sorry, sorry to be mean.
Keith: Okay so our next word is
Seol: 드리다
Keith: To offer 근데 이거는 원래 ‘주다’의 말이죠?
Seol: 네. 주다하고 같은 의미인데 높임말이에요.
Keith: So yeah you use this when you are talking to older people or when you are using polite language. 주다는 드리다로 바뀌는 거죠.
Seol: 네. 선생님께 드리다. 아버지께 드리다.
Keith: Okay let’s go over the conjugation of it really quick. The verb stem is
Seol: 드리
Keith: And now let’s conjugate it into the standard politeness level, simple present tense.
Seol: 드려요
Keith: All right and the last phrase we want to go over is
Seol: 뭐야
Keith: What is it?
Seol: 뭐야
Keith: 뭐가 뭐예요?
Seol: 뭐야 이 나쁜 사람? 민호 나쁘잖아요. 뭐야 이 사람.
Keith: 이거는 어떤 상황에 쓰는 거예요?
Seol: 당황했거나 화가 났거나 아니면 이해가 잘 안 될 때.
Keith: 그럼 설씨도 예를 한 번 들어 봐요.
Seol: 어떤 사람이 길에서 저를 툭 치고 지나갔는데 미안하다고 사과하지 않고 그냥 가 버리면 뭐야 이 사람 이렇게 생각해요.
Keith: So do you have any personal examples?
Seol: 어떤 언니가 저한테 너 정말 못됐어 이렇게 말했을 때 뭐야 내가 뭐가 못됐어라고 생각했어요.
Keith: Literally this means, what is it. You use it when you don’t understand something.

Lesson focus

Keith: Okay let’s move on to our grammar point of today. 오늘 grammar point가 뭐죠?
Seol: 뭐뭐 을까요?
Keith: Shall we. So all we do here is have a verb and then we add 을까요 to it and now we have verb, shall we. 이거는 어떻게 만들어요?
Seol: 동사의 어근에 받침이 있을 경우에는 어근 + 을까요 그리고 만약에 동사가 모음으로 끝날 때는 그 모음 바로 밑에 받침 ㄹ을 붙여 준 다음에 까요.
Keith: We take a verb, subtract 다 and then we get the verb stem and if it ends in a vowel, then we add ㄹ but if it ends in a consonant, we add 을, it becomes ㄹ까요 or 을까요. Let’s have a couple of examples.
Seol: 영화 보다
Keith: The verb stem is
Seol: 보
Keith: And there, the verb stem ends in a vowel.
Seol: 볼까요
Keith: So we add ㄹ까요
Seol: 영화 볼까요?
Keith: Shall we see a movie. Another example is
Seol: 밥 먹을까요
Keith: Okay so the verb there is
Seol: 먹다
Keith: And now we take the verb stem
Seol: 먹
Keith: And now there because it ends in a consonant, we add 을
Seol: 먹을까요
Keith: Shall we eat. Okay our second grammar point of today is
Seol: 을게요
Keith: 을까요랑 똑같죠?
Seol: 네, 을게요를 만드는 방법은 을까요, 밥 먹을까요, 영화 볼까요랑 똑같아요.
Keith: And this means I will. So you have the intention, intention in your voice. So I will, I intend to or we will, we intend to do something. All right. So let’s have those examples.
Seol: 영화 볼게요
Keith: What’s the verb there?
Seol: 보다
Keith: The verb stem
Seol: 보
Keith: We make it the same way except instead of 까요, it’s 게요.
Seol: 볼게요, 영화 볼게요.
Keith: We will watch a movie or I will watch a movie. And our next example is.
Seol: 밥 먹을게요.
Keith: The verb there is
Seol: 먹다
Keith: Now the verb stem
Seol: 먹
Keith: And now we just add that same conjugation 을 because it ends in a consonant.
Seol: 밥 먹을게요.
Keith: I will eat food. Now the written form of this is 게요. 발음할 때는?
Seol: 께요
Keith: This is just one of those little quarks in pronunciation just 께요 but it’s written as 게요. Remember to check out that PDF because 우리 끝났어요 오늘.

Outro

Seol: 우와
Keith: 신났어요?
Seol: 네, 그렇지만 집에 가서도 꼭 공부할게요.
Keith: 잘 썼네요. All right, that’s going to do for today. 다음에 봅시다.
Seol: 수고하셨습니다.
