Hi Alex,

This is Madison from Koreanclass101.com.

Thank you for your question. I bet it is very confusing!

Okay so let me explain to you first.

Korea has two ways of counting an age! - one for general situations, another for official one.

Basically the first one is by the year. You literally subtract when you're born from the present year.

So for you, 2012 - 1996 = 16.

However, for the second one, official one, we call it by 'man, 만' and this would be 2012 - 1996 +1(since your birthday didn't pass yet) = 만 15.
So when your birthday passes, you would become 만 16 as well.

Hope you understood well? :)

Good luck with your study and let us know anytime you have question!

Thank you,

:razz:Hi, Nirova.

I'm Jaehwi from Koreanclass101.com

Thank you for the comment. It's glad to hear the lesson was helpful for you. When Korean people meet 30 year-old or older, they prefer counting their again in non-Korean style, so that they can be called at least one year younger (or two year sometimes)

About the help for learning Korean, you can all the answer about Korean language if you write your questions at our website. We check it almost everyday and answer right away. : )

If you have any other questions about Korean, please let us know so that we can help you.

Hello!!!
Wow, I did not know that there was a different age system in Korea, that explains why every time someone asks for the age of the other person they reply with the year they were born instead of their age...(or so I've seen in many programmes). Pretty cool! as long as you don't mind being 'older' than your actual age ha ha.

Well, I also wrie because I'm very interested in learning Korean, it's been something new I want to try and I'm wondering if there is someone who could help me?:grin:

Thank you

:razz:Hi, weiximah.

If all of them were born in 1990, they are the same age. In those cases, although Taeil is the oldest one technically, all of them can say in friendly and informal ways because we don't care of what months who were born earlier.

However, if someone came into a college or a high school earlier than others for some reasons, the person can be considered as a senior, and others can say politely.

For general cases, I believe that there should be no reason Jaehyo says he is the oldest.

I hope this would help you.

Thank you : )

ok.. i'm a little confused, there's this rookie group that i'm supporting, i don't know if you know them.. block b.. they have their oldest member jaehyo who was born in dec23 '90. what confuses me is, they have 3 90-ers in their group,
jaehyo- dec23
bbom- dec14
taeil- sept24

so that makes taeil oldest right? but why's jaehyo claiming he's the oldest when ask in intervies..? or is the calendar in korea not the same internationally?

 Hi, Weiximah.

Actually the month doesn't matter when Korean people count their age. If both of you are born in the same year, you are the same age. (especially, your birthday is on November so I don't think that you are older than her in any ways)

If you have any more questions, please let us know. Thank you.

@Katharine : If you were born in 1995, try this formula.

(current year) - (your birth year) + 1
2011-1995+1=17

So your age is 17 in Korea.

@issa: 2011-1992+1= 20
You are 20 years old in Korea.

This helped a bunch, but I'm still confused. I was born in 1995, so by Western standards I'm only turning 16 but by Korean standards, I'd already be 17 since it's past January 1st? And will I be turning "18" on my birthday in May or do I stay "17"?:???:

Hello Ruth,
This year "2011" - "1993" + 1 = 18 :grin::razz::wink:
About their (all the K-actors) ages, they wouldn't follow up this calculation but they would follow the Western's (since they are 'public individuals').
I hope this helps,
cheers,
Tim

Oh~~ I see... you will get one year older in May... ^^

"You're very welcome!"
I can give you the answer right now. Or do you want to figure it out by listening to one of lessons I made? The focus of lesson is about "Sino-Korean Number". You will learn how to say the year of "1989" as well as counting Korean money. Are you interested in...?

Please give yourself a listen to Absolute Beginner Season 2 Lesson 10.

I hope I can meet you throughout the lesson and have fun learning Korean together. If you are not interested in, just look at the end of this comment.
Thanks,
cheers,

Tim

"1989" = 천 구백 팔십 구 (cheon gu-baek pal-sip gu) nyeon "year"

Hello Jan Rei D,

When you calculates your age in Korean, don't need to think of your birthday.
EVERYBODY will get older (one year) every new year (Jan 1st).

Therefore,
This year 2010 - the year you were born + 1 = this gives you your Korean age.

Therefore, for your age, (Your birthday is Jan 2nd, 1994) (again don't need to worry about your birthday).
2010 - 1994 + 1 = 17! you are 17 in Korean.
cheers,
Tim
