Everyone… have you ever eaten soy bean stew? What do you think about it?

넬리 says:

no offense, but it’s not really love at first taste. NOW, i love soybean stew, but at first the smell almost killed me. how about sundubu jigae? wow that stuff is magically delicious, especially if it’s cold weather. so why is the taste so different between soybean stew and tofu stew? don’t they essentially originate from the same plant? i knew i should have gone to culinary school. oh well, just somebody answer my question…ju-sey-yo

Yes, I have eaten it. Soy bean stew is my favorite of all the Korean stews. Its very delicious and tasty. I want to have now! I also want to learn how to make it. Don’t forget about 정국장 (cheong guk jang). It smells like feet, but also tastes good.

오스틴 says:

seoulsista says:

i know what that soy bean thing is!! It has such a strong smell, but luckily I’m a strong girl!!

It takes a little getting used to, but I like it!!

Austin, how do you make the soup? Did you find out?

사라 says:

Am I the only one who has an extremely difficult time saying 를? When I hear it in the lesson it flows so nicely but I can’t say it without having a distinct difference between the marker and the object before it.

avatar
선현우 says:

the different between 된장찌개(soybeen stew) and 두부찌개(tofu stew) is very miniscule indeed because most 된장찌개 has 두부 in it and most 두부찌개 are made in the form of 된장찌개. :D

So, you can make 된장찌개 without 두부, but 99% of 된장찌개 that you will find in Korea will have 두부 in it :D and if you ask for 두부찌개, you will almost always get a 두부된장찌개 : ) but there are sometimes 두부김치찌개, so … that can be an exception. Hehe.

—————————-

:D

seoulsista,

hehe, actually the secret of making good 된장찌개 is how good the 된장 is .. :D so finding good 된장 is more important I guess. but these days, the 된장 that you can find at any supermarket is really good so.. :D it’s really an easy dish to make! :-) I love 된장찌개 too!

사라

To me, the ‘를’ sound seems to be similar to the English sound that you make when you say “not at all” really fast, I mean when the “T” sound is softened, so “not at all” sounds like “나래롤” :D

If you remember this sound, I think it can help you get the feel of the 를 sound combined with other sounds!

:D

avatar
넬리 says:

yes, i guess that’s really true. the ingredients in 두부찌개 and 된장찌개 are very similar. but whatever extra something they put in the 두부찌개 makes a difference. also I love the 된장 that ajumma makes herself, but I buy some from the supermarket that’s no good.

ahh, thanks for the pronunciation tip of “를”. it’s amazing how we have that same sound in english, but for some reason it’s so difficult to pronounce in korean. doesn’t make sense really. oh well, keep on trying.

avatar
선현우 says:

if you want to make your 된장찌개 more tasty, try putting in some sliced red pepper and sliced onion :D that might help. heh heh.

And about the pronunciation, I’m sure it will come in time :D just like you said, keep on trying! :-)

avatar
사라 says:

Thank you for the tip, I will try to keep that in mind when pronouncing it from now on ^-^

avatar
선현우 says:

사라,

you’re welcome! :D

Carl Kenner says:

The voice actors always say “B”, but Kieth and Seol always say “M”. It is kind of annoying.

By the way, non-asians often eat tofu, especially if they are vegetarian.

avatar
오스틴 says:

Carl, can you be specific with when you heard it this lesson? I’m not trying to discount you, I just want to see what you’re hearing that I am obviously missing.

avatar
james says:

I made 된장찌개 once. Maybe it was the brand of 된장 that I got but there was a sour (셔요/신맛이?) note that really, um, bothered me.

avatar
Alex says:

If you want to learn how to make 된장찌개 go to this link:

Actually, if you want to learn how to make ANY Korean dishes, you’ll be able to find it on her site. I’ve made many of her dishes successfully to adoring eaters

I think I’ll need her videos too!!

Vivian says:

I’m confused, you only use the “reul” if you are speaking about an object? Also i don’t understand why “neun” is used in certain situations and not others?

avatar
Karisa says:

Hi! I’m vegetarian, is doenjangjjigae vegetarian? or is it just made with soy bean paste? does anyone know of a good vegetarian jjigae?

avatar
선현우(Hyunwoo Sun) says:

Vivian,

You can use ‘reul’ in most cases, but sometimes when you want to emphasize an object in contrast to something else, you can use ‘neun’ in place of ‘reul’ :)

For example

uyu-reul joahaeyo ( i like milk )

uyu-neun joahaeyo ( i don’t know about other things, but as for milk only, I like it )

avatar
선현우(Hyunwoo Sun) says:

Karisa,

Doenjangjjigae can be vegetarian or not so vegetarian. It depends on what they add to the soup - the best way to go is to make your order specific when you order doenjangjjigae and say ‘ gogi ppaego juseyo (고기 빼고 주세요) ‘ which means ‘please don’t put meat in it’ :)

avatar
ukkki says:

In the lesson notes, “싫어하다” is romanized as “jojahada”, but should be “silheohada”, I think it’s a small mistake, because in reality “jojahada” corresponds to “촣아하다” right? ^^

And in formal conversation “eat?” is “드십니까?” or “드세요?” What is the verb in this case? Is “드시다”?

I really like the lessons.
Thanks for making learn Korean as easy.
And read the comments are also a great help. :D

Oops, I tried to post and something seems to have eaten my post.

Speaking of eating, I ate 김치찌개 for the first time today at my local Lotte Plaza. (I’m so lucky to be in the U.S. but have one near me!)

It was fun to sit there and try to pick out whatever words I could from the conversations at the tables around me. Speaking of the tables, I loved how the “chairs” were just lacquered tree stumps…

I also picked up some 소주 and will try it for the first time tonight. Too bad they didn’t have and 사과소주. I think I would like it!

KoreanClass101.com says:

 Hi, Angela. : )

Glad to see you again!

I’m sorry that you had to write the post again. Actually, I’ve just had the same problem with my web-browser

It is great that you had your first 김치찌개 at the restaurant near your home. I didn’t know that Lotte Plaza is also in the U.S. The staff should be very surprising that you order the 김치찌개 and say some Korean words : ) I think it is the best place to know Korean and practice Korean language.

How was the 소주? For some people like me, 소주 is strong, so sometimes I get headaches next morning. I hope you felt okay on the next day : )

If you would like to make 사과소주, the apple soju, you can fill 30% of a cup with Soju and other 70% with Apple juice. That’s the popular recipe for making mixed-soju.

Thank you for sharing your experiences, and I hope to hear more stories from you soon.

Thank you.

 Hello, Frank.

I’m Jaehwi from Koreanclass101.com

I’m glad to hear that you liked the 소불고기(so-bulgogi/beef-bulgogi) at the restaurant. I love the food too, and usually enjoy the spicy one : )
You can also get a sauce for making your own 소불고기 at home. I hope someday you can make it too : )

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Have a nice weekend!
