Learn Korean with KoreanClass101.com! Instead of our usual Beginner Lesson, we are sending out a special feed. The reason for this is because today (well, not today, but yesterday) is Pepero Day! Pepero is a chocolate covered cookie stick that is made by Lotte. This is a day celebrated in Korea which is very much like Valentines Day. One gives and receives presents, gifts, and on this day, Pepero! A day very unique to Korea, this is a culture class that you don’t want to miss! After listening, remember to stop by KoreanClass101.com and leave us a post!

Our regularly scheduled Beginner Lesson will continue next week ;)

Our recording was originially intended for November 11th (11/11). So in the audio, when Keith and Seol speak of “today,” they are talking of November 11th.

How was everyone’s Pepero Day?
(Did anyone receive a confession of love?)

avatar 선현우 says:

One of the copycat brands in Korea for 빼빼로 is “Youna(유나)”, and my sister’s name happens to be 윤아(Yoon-a), so yesterday she came back home with three big boxes of the copycat 빼빼로 with her name(or something silimar to it) written all over on them. :D :D

Interesting topic today. I did some research about Pepero Day and found this:

The Pepero Song  : http://www.pepero.co.kr/img/flash/ani/ani03.swf

avatar Kasey says:

Ohh, is 빼빼로 similar to Japanese Pocky?

avatar Daniel K says:

Kasey!

Yeah, I hadn’t made that link until I read your posts! I suppose 빼빼로 and Pocky are pretty similar, if not the same. I know Pocky comes in many different flavours, but I’m not sure about 빼빼로…

All I know is I got a lot of 빼빼로 from my students yesterday and Friday. Gotta love chocolate!

avatar seoulsista says:

wow!! I’d like a kobek… from a cute Korean guy

it sounds really fun and a romantic way day!

I need to find me some peppero

avatar Keith says:

Jonah, thanks for the feedback. What do you mean specifically? Are you looking for a video?

And yes 빼빼로 is like Japanese “Pocky”

Daniel, Enjoy your 빼빼로 ^^

avatar 비누 says:

Daniel

avatar Jacqueline (쟈클린) says:

This is an example of why i don’t like romanization.

I thought the romanization for 빼빼로 was Ppaeppaero. :???:

avatar Carl Kenner says:

It’s a shame this lesson came so late. I would have gone down to my local korean shop and bought some.

I don’t mind romanisation. “imnida” is much easier to read than the korean version spelt with a b. And don’t forget delicious and not delicious. But both ways of writing korean words are equally unhelpful in my opinion  If only they had a logical spelling system like Japanese.

avatar 오스틴 says:

I think hanguel IS a highly logical spelling system!

The variants of consonants give you clues about the pronunciations:

ㄷ regular d/t sound
ㄸ double symbol (glottalized)
ㅌ (extra horizontal line = aspirated!

ㄱ regular sound
ㄲ double, so glottalized
ㅋextra horizontal line.. aspirated!

ㅂ regular sound
ㅃ double, glottalized
ㅍaspirated (ok, so theres not an EXTRA horizontal line.. but you get the idea

ㅈ,ㅉ,ㅊ same thing

But in any language, there are always exceptions to the rules… which explains why 습나다 has an /m/ sound instead of the /p/ or /b/ which is clearly how it’s spelled.

as for Japanese, I am very ignorant I didn’t know that hirigana is so logical.. can you explain what you mean?

avatar Seol says:

I love the culture class most!
I wish you guys love this program~
