Hi Hyunwoo!

The most amazing thing about Hyunwoo is his breakdancing. In case you didn’t realise, those aren’t still photos of Hyunwoo there.

avatar
maxiewawa says:

Just listened to all of it, and liked it! Didn’t catch so much though. I got 서울 에서…and ‘대학교’ (I’m not sure how it’s spelt) which I took to mean that you’re at university in Seoul.

 Bonjour Hyunwoo! Tu apprends français? Moi, je ne suis pas de France mais j’appris un peu de français. Ton blog est magnifique!

Yes, I speak a bit of French. My uncle married a French girl so I learnt a bit of French. I learn other languages now but do keep a bit of French under my belt at all times. 안녕!

avatar
maxiewawa says:

Is there a mistake in the transcript?

In the transcript in the learning center, we have a long paragraph which starts: 자, 이것으로 첫 번째 오디오 블로그를 마치겠습니다. But when we hear the voice we hear 자, 그럼… and it continues, as the transcript is written. Is there a word missing (그럼)?

It’s the second last paragraph.

avatar
KoreanClass101.com says:

Maxie, you’re totally right! we were missing one word. Thanks for the heads up! We’ll fix that right away!

But like you said I’m so glad that we have those websites like verb conjugator. :D And I hate traslation websites too! :D

Let’s write more Korean here, then. It’s really cool that everybody knows some French!! :D (모두 프랑스어를 조금씩 할 줄 안다니 진짜 멋진데요!)

Jasta says:

i am listening to the audio with reduced speed but still i have a hard time catching everything like in this part 재미있게 하고 계시죠. The third syllable 있, i can’t hear it. Is there something special about it, does it prolongue the previous sound, or is my hearing just bad?

avatar
Keith says:

Actually Jasta, your hearing seems to be very precise :)
sometimes, when one syllabic block is proceeded by another syllabic block with the same vowel, they almost merge into one.

For example:

재미있다, 미 is followed by 있, which uses the same vowel ( ㅣ ). So in Korean, it’s much easier to fuse these two together.

Colloquially, 재미있다 sometimes is said as 재밌다 just because it’s much easier to merge the two together, without having to pause between 미 and 있.

Hope this makes sense :D

maxiewawa says:

Had my first day of 진극아 at 대학교, 흔극사람 애 만나다. About half the class is Korean!. I said I was from 하조 (instead of 호주) and kept calling everyone 김 씨 (we’ve been told it was really rude) but at least I said something!

avatar
Keith says:

셰리씨는 현우의 여동생인지 알았는데, 중국 사람이라고 하니깐… 아닌가봐요..

아무튼.. 반갑습니다!!

한나 씨도~ 반갑습니다~

Jimmy, I’m glad that learning Hangul is getting much easier! I hope you’re enjoying these audio blogs, as well as the rest of the lessons :)

Devon, keep on listening. Even if you aren’t actively studying, there are definitely things you’ll pick if you keep listening!

Matthew, we will be coming out with some “How to write Hangul” series, which will be debuting october.. Hopefully it’ll simplify it you!

Steved, from my knowledge so far of the users here, you have the highest level of Korean. How was this audio blog for you?

Let us know folks! Great to hear from all of you!!

avatar
Keith says:

lol Maxie… you’re a riot  if you called everyone 김 씨, didn’t about half the Koreans look up?? kekekek

avatar
maxiewawa says:

It’s funny you should say that… the first guy I met said his name was 김 something-something… I said “Oh, I can just call you Kim if it’s ok, that’s easier to remember for me to remember.” He smiled and said “but we’re all called 김!”

avatar
sherry says:

응…알았어요  오빠, i’ll tell my friends about this place who are interested in korean ,and to get more chinese people here:)

avatar
Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Jasta //

Just like Keith said, your hearing is very precise. You have a very good point!!

I’ve made a little video clip, hoping that this will help you understand the difference between the sounds of 재미있게 and 재밌게, because in Korean this can be very subtle.

 http://youtube.com/watch?v=7-KsCAKf5TQ

Please check out the video.
You can hear “재미있게” and “재밌게” separately ^_^!

Thank you so much for pointing it out.

Keith,
I liked the audio blog. I did not have any difficulty with it. 현우씨 spoke in a very easy to understand way. After listening through the blog I listened again with the transcript which I think will really benefit me in my reading speed (I am very slow reading Korean  ).

I finally got around to posting my 가족 소개 in the forums.

I don’t think there’s any Korean dictionary in the same format as the Jim Breen’s Dictionary,

but these dictionaries will be very helpful for you in learning Korean.

http://endic.naver.com/
http://kr.dic.yahoo.com/search/eng/
http://engdic.daum.net/dicen/view_top.do

The word for English Dictionary in Korean is “영어사전”, so for Koreans, “영어사전” means an English-Korean dictionary, but these websites all offer English-Korean and Korean-English dictionaries~!!

우와 … 4개국어를~~ Wow you speak four languages - that’s Malay, English, Japanese and Chinese, right? You’re adding Korean to the list - that’s cool!!

한국어도 같이 열심히 해요!!
韩国语因该不是很简单,但是我觉得韩语比中文很好学。ㅋㅋ

화이팅!!

Endoru(엔도루) says:

선현우씨,감사합니다
C’est tres bien.
It’s nice mixing up the languages here.
I knew if I were to add Malay here, I won’t get a respond anyway. *hehe*

今はマレーシアじゃなくて,日本の千葉に住んでいます.
こちらの大学院で勉強しています.
因为我学过日语了,我觉得韩语很好读!
But, still, I am still an amateur to the language and yes, I think I need the time to understand the rest of what you’ve written there

Have many Korean friends and been Seoul for a trip before and definitely love that country, the food and the culture especially.
Love to be able to master the language someday.
Peace.

P/S Yeah, I would like to add French and Spanish to my list as well. Not gonna be easy at this age but I will try. *hehe*

Jasta says:

Keith, 선현우 thanks for the explaination. wow even a video! Now that’s what i call good service

avatar
Jasta says:

i watched the video a couple of times and i hear the difference but the 2 little guys on the bottom of 밌 or 있, aren’t they pronounced ss in other words? in the video they sound like a p or something.

avatar
Keith says:

Jasta, you’re right. But there are a few pronunciation changes in Korean.

When ㅅ is in the last position of a syllabic block, it has a “t” like sound. But if you have ㅇ or ㅅ in the first position of the next syllabic block, the sound changes to what it should be, ㅅ (s). Does this make sense at all?

Hey all..

Reaching way back in history here…. but I just want to let you in on a new project, and challenge you to do the same! Remember max talked about some weekly video HW assignments a while ago? Well, I know that that making videos really helps with my speaking, and I really want to make more, but it’s hard to think of good subject matter when I’m studying on my own here.. so I decided to make a video using some of the vocab from each audio blog that was new for me.

Lesson 1 is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZOIsHYKaB4

If you have access to ANY sort of video camera, I strongly encourage you to make some videos.. we won’t laugh! We’re all in this together!

i have been to Korea for 2 months and currently studying korean in beginner level in Seoul.
i could say the audio blog thanks to 현우 was very clear and understandable. I had a bit difficulties with some vocabularies and sentences…
i was wondering, is there any possibility to have some 3-5 pages stories at the end of the each level ?!
i think it would be great for practising…
I have been looking for kids books but some of them still very hard…however easier ones are not worth to buy it!

Wow I’ve just discovered KoreanClass 101 2 weeks ago, and I didn’t realized it was so successful!!
I must admit it’s amazing!! It helps us thinking that Korean is easy :)
The Audioblog is great! Thanks Hyunwoo!
I understood like 10 words, but it’s a good start!!
Besides, I’m so glad to know Korean people learning French!!
I’m French, and I admit the language is kind of a pain in the ass sometimes…Congratulations!!
A day will come when all of us will understand this AudioBlog ^^
Thanks to the whole team!
Marine.

PS : By the way, are there any French here learning Korean through Korean Class 101?

avatar
선현우(Hyunwoo Sun) says:

Marine :)

안녕하세요 ^^!
Thanks for the comment ^_^ ! 10 words is a great start! :) Please feel free to ask any questions you have - I’ll do my best to answer them!

Je ne sais pas c’est quoi exactement qui m’a donné envie d´apprendre le français, mais quand j’etais sur le point d’entrer une université, je voulais apprendre une autre langue que l´anglais, et pas très longtemps aprés que j´ai commencé à etudier le français, j´ai trouvé que le français est une langue très charmante bien qu´il n´est pas très facile à l´apprendre comme tu l´as dit, hehe.

Je crois qu´il y a beaucoup d´autres personnes ici qui parlent le français ^^!

asim, 안녕하세요!

Thank you very much for the compliment, and it’s great to hear that you’re working hard on your Korean :) The tip I can give you is to practice your pronunciation with a voice recorder - that’s what I usually do when I study foreign languages. Recording and listening to your own voice and pronunciation can be very helpful in figuring out what specific sounds are making your current pronunciation sound a bit different from a native speaker ^^. And another tip I think can be useful is to break down a sentence if it’s too long, and work on parts first and then put them together ^^ For example if you see a sentence like 저는 학생이고, 서울에 살고 있고, 요리를 좋아해요. and this it’s too long, just work on 저는 학생이고 until you get really good at saying it, and just work on 서울에 살고 있고, and then 요리를 좋아해요 ^^ And after you get good at saying all three of them , you put them together :)

I hope it helps ^^ 화이팅!!

hi,
thanks for the tip. i’ll try to practice that way to improve my pronounciation and if i need more help i’ll definately get back to you.

thanks once again for helping me out.

asim says:

Hi,
i got a small probelm thats y im bothering u again  . i’ve completed the fist 5 lessons of the beginners level and i have mastered them all but in the pdf files “informal conversation” is also provided but the conversation is not included in the audio files and no romanizations are provided so i can understand what is in the pdf files. i can read it but am confused about the exact pronounciation.so i just wanted to ask that are they included in the later lessons or i have to study that by my self. im concerned because informal way of conversation is mostly used.
i’ll be glad if u make things clear for me.

p.s. i tried the suggestion u gave me and it actually worked. my pronounciation improved alot.

thanks.

Soy Sizzle says:

asim, the audio for the more informal conjugations are not provided. However the slightly less informal speech is covered in later lessons starting at about lesson #14, so don’t worry. I would focus on what is specifically covered in each lesson for now.

Hey Hyunwoo Sun ssi! Je parle Français aussi! ^-^ Je n’ai pas le choix de toute façon ici on parle le Français
Oui tu as raison malgré tout c’est une langue très charmente mais très difficile avec la grammaire, les vocabulaires etc.
Je rêve d’aller en Asie à l’entour de la Chine et je vais problablement pouvoir y aller avec mes best friends quand je vais être grande (j’ai 13 ans alors…environs dans 10 autres années). J’espère pouvoir te rencontrer là-bas!
Take care!
P.S. Oh you’ve got an amazing voice by the way

avatar
선현우(Hyunwoo Sun) says:

 Soy Sizzle Thanks for the answer :) and yes, asim, the audio for informal conversations are not provided for the audio blogs, but we’ve started including informal/formal tracks to the lower intermediate lessons and will be doing so for the future lessons ^_^

Miranda,

Take care! Tu as l’air super bon en dance

avatar
asim says:

hi,
i still get confused that y ‘l’ is used instead of ‘r’ in the word ilbon and ‘b’ instead of ‘p’. same is the case with g and k…why miguk. is there any specific thumbrule? maybe i missed it out.
help will be greatly appriciated. thanks.

avatar
Keith says:

Hey asim :)

the general rule for romanization for ㄹ is when it starts a syllable, it’s ‘r’ if it ends a syllable, it is ‘l’ And the same goes with ㅂ. If it starts a syllable it is ‘b’ if it ends a syllable it is ‘p’

I hope this helps!

avatar
asim says:

hi keith

thanks for the help.thanks alot…that’s easy  . does the same rules apply to ’s’, ‘t’ and ‘g’,'k’?

one thing i appreciate is that the lessons are so easy and u guys have done a great job (k.class team) . double thumbs up!!!

vocab is provided in each lesson and that helps alot but as i was listening to the audio blogs some words appeared quite frequently but i cant understand the meaning of those words like ‘myeon’, ‘hajiman’ etc. anyways maybe i’ll be able to understand them after some time  .

Jacob Burgess says:

I recently signed up on this website to improve my Korean, and have found these audio blogs and lessons quite helpful. I especially enjoy the lesson notes available PDF format. For the basic lessons all the PDF files were easily downloaded through the My Feed feature. But for these audio blogs most of the PDF files are missing in the download. I can view each file individually on the website, but for some reason I was able to download the lesson notes for just Audio Blogs #23 and #24, and Advanced Audio Blogs #2, #7, #8, #9, #10, #11, #12, #13, #14, and #15. I’m not sure why that is the case, but if it would be possible to make all the lesson notes available through the My Feed feature, that would be fantastic.
감사합니다.

안녕하세요^^

I just subscribed to Koreanclass101 and I found that this site is great! It looks everyone are studying hard and it gives me the motivation as well.. ㅋㅋ

I learned a month of Korean when I went to Korean this summer and I love it. I am trying to learn by myself however, it’s really difficult due to the time constraints. -_-; mainly, you tend to forget a language if you don’t use it as much in your daily life. Isn’t it?

That’s why when I saw somewhere from that blog that you do speak French^^’and it’s your second language? As-tu appris à corée? Tu es bon! J’espère de pouvoir comprendre et parler conversations en Korean bientôt -_-
lol

Salut 현우,

J’habite en France et j’apprends le coréen depuis deux ans, mais pas de façon intensive. Cela m’a fait plaisir de savoir qu’il de mes animateurs de Podcast préféré sur ce site faisait des études de français. En plus il a fait du breakdance comme moi. Je viens de finir de voir toutes les leçons en lower intermediate et je tenais à te féliciter pour ton travail.

I’m living en France and have been learning korean since two years now. But not intensively though. It made me happy to know that one of the member staff is majoring in french. He’s also practicing breakdance like me :D I just finished listening to all the lessons in lower intermediate. And I want to praise you for your great work.

See you on the website !

그게 뭐예요??? ㅋㅋㅋ
-”Être” 동사는 Je suis, tu es, il est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils sont….왜 그래요…?
그 이유때문에 포기한 분 많나봐요 ~

Je pense sincèrement qu’il faut être très courageux pour apprendre notre langue Hyun-Hoo, bravo!

선현우씨 프랑스어 잘 하세요^^ 축하합니다

what a cool audio blog. I’m taking korean class course right now. itz been 1,5 years but my korean still far from good. the hardest thing is to memorize. specially all the grammar. 선현우씨 any advice?? :D i feel that i never improved. I’m gonna be in level 6 next week. Yay…!!!

Chris says:

I can understand your blog completely however I am only a level 3 from 6 student at the univeristy and can only understand about 20% of a TV program.
Is this level really advanced hyun su?
I recommend you guys change all your levels back one and make more materials for an advanced level. Lets be honest, this is intermediate level.
Your website is very good, especially for people starting to learn Korean, and I think its great that you guys had the initiative to get it going. You are providing a great educational service. However if you want to be really good you should listen to the feedback.
I think you should hire a very experienced qualified teacher, perhaps from a university to make a real advanced level.
