avatar JockZon (JZ) says:

Oh NICE! A lesson ^^ I’m in school so I can’t listen yet though  Anyway, later dudes! hehe

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Great lesson :D

Now you can start asking simple questions in Korean using the phrases introduced in the lesson :D

여러분(everyone!), can you answer this question?

“여러분은 학생입니까? “

avatar JockZon (JZ) says:

저는핰셍입니다.’이름’도핰셍입니까?

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

핰셍 —-> 학생 ^^

who is ‘이름’? kkkkk

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

저도 학생입니다! (I’m a student too!)

avatar JockZon (JZ) says:

헌우씨,네…학생입니다~

avatar JockZon (JZ) says:

I though 이름 was name in korean :P

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

I know, and you’re right :D I was just kidding.

이름 means name in most cases,

but sometimes it specifically means your given name
as opposed to ‘성’ which is ‘family name’

So if I introduced myself as “저는 현우예요.”, you can ask me, “성이 뭐예요?(What’s your family name?)”

:D

avatar JockZon (JZ) says:

Ah awesome ^^ I still have problems with the spelling of words haha.

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

요아킴,

요아킴은 성이 뭐예요?

ㅋㅋ

avatar JockZon (JZ) says:

Btw, I wrote ireum since I couldn’t think of a real name haha.

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

When Koreans can’t think of a real name, we say “아무개”

아무개 means something like… ’somebody’ or ’someone’

:D

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

It’s like “Mr. so-and-so”

avatar Mary Sue says:

여러분은 학생입니까?

내, 에러분은 학생입니다!

I am having some trouble with the hangul for hoesawon; what an I doing wrong?
h=ㅎ
o=ㅗ so hoe=호ㅔ? but it is 허, “heo?”
e=ㅔ

I am having similar problems with boep. I know “eo” is ㅓ; is this interchangable with “oe?” 법, not 보ㅔㅂ?

간삽니다!

avatar JockZon (JZ) says:

I almost understood 요아킴은 성이 뭐예요? but I cannot figure it out.

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Mary(메리),

회사원’s “회” can be typed with the letters ” G + H + L ”

[eo] is “ㅓ” as in ‘cup’ or ‘hug’

end [oe] is ‘ㅚ’ as in ‘way’ or ‘weigh’

You keep getting something different from what you want because you should press H L instead of H P

I hope this helps

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

요아킴은 성이 뭐예요?
= Joakim, what’s your family name?

성 = family name :grin:

avatar JockZon (JZ) says:

But what is 이 뭐예요?

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

“뭐예요?” is the same as “무엇입니까?”

which means “What is…?”

^_^

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Try to say “무엇” as fast as you can,

and it becomes “뭐” :D

avatar JockZon (JZ) says:

haha ok so it’s some kind of abbreviation?

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Yeah it’s abbreviation, but an official one :D

Some young kids would say “머” or “모” chatting rooms

avatar JockZon (JZ) says:

but what is 이 in 성이? Particle of some kind? And what is 예요 literally?

avatar Mary Sue says:

Thank you, 순현우씨! So 회=hoi? Is there a rule to tell ? Or am I getting too hung up on the “romanization” thing?
메리 수

avatar steved says:

요아킴, You are right, the 이 is a subject particle similar to 는. The 예요 is the informal polite of 입니다 (to be root or dictionary form 이다). Hope that helps.
Very nice lesson by the way.

avatar steved says:

메리 수, 방갑습니다.
저는 스티브 입니다.
I wouldn’t get too hung up on romanizing. In the long run it will mess up how you pronounce the Korean. Work on learning hangul 한글 and once you have that down romanizing really won’t matter IMHO. It is pretty straight forward.

avatar steved says:

Oops 반갑습니다.

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Mary, I think Steve explained it all very well. Are you clear with it now? ^_^ And please call me 선현우, not ‘순현우’ ^_^

The way I write my name in English is unfortunately different from the romanization. :???:

avatar Mary Sue says:

수티브, 저움뵙겠슴니다!

What does 반갑습니다 mean? ban gap subnida?

avatar Mary Sue says:

선휸우, I apologize…this is a good example if the difficulty I am having going from romanization to hangul! So it would be more precisely written (or thought in my head) HyunWoo Seon? Pronounced as the English word “sun?”

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Mary //

In romanization my name would be Seon Hyeon U ^_^

반갑습니다 means “I’m glad to meet you.” or “It’s good to meet you”

Yep mastering how to read hangul as soon as possible will be definitely of great benefit when you study Korean ^_^!

avatar steved says:

반갑습니다 is basically “nice to meet you” and can be said anytime not just on first meetings. The difficulty with 선현우’s name is a good reason to avoid romanization once you know the Korean alphabet.

avatar steved says:

선현우씨, you’re up awfully early/late…

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Haha, yeah, I’m trying to get the photos I took from China labeled and sorted before I forget which photo was taken when and where (some 3000 of them). What time is it there now, Steve?

avatar steved says:

Lunch time!! 오후 열두시

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Aha! 점심 맛있게 드세요 (Enjoy your lunch!)

저는 자러 갈게요 (I’m going to bed~)

avatar Sean Somers says:

Would it be possible to set up the premium feed to deliver the .pdf files as well as the audio?

Thanks!

avatar Eran says:

Thanks,

avatar maxiewawa says:

Maybe 예요 = ~ます

선현우씨는 학생입냐까?

avatar Devon says:

Good lesson. So similar to Japanese! I’m having trouble with the pronunication of hoesawon. I totally understand learning Hangul is most more important than learning the Romanji version. But is there a book or website that helps with the pronunication of Hangul… it’s so hard to say correctly without some sort of reference! thanks!

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Maxiewawa,

네, 저는 학생이에요.

Max 씨도 학생이에요?

avatar maxiewawa says:

네, 저는 학생이에요. 한극아의 학생이에요.

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Max, :D good sentence :D

To make it even better,
you can say

“네, 저는 학생이에요”

“한국어를 배우는 학생이에요”

(배우다 = to learn)

avatar Keith says:

여러분~ 안녕하세요! ^^ (Hi everyone) for no specific reason

avatar says:

I really like the charisma of Keith and 윤 설 ….I really like the accompanied pdf. I did find one minor thing in the pdf under grammar Point #3 Example 1 : there should be a 아 instead of a 이 . In 학 생 입 니 다. Just a typo for sure.

Keep them coming.

avatar R says:

존,

I do not believe there is a typo in the phrase “학 생 입 니 다”, it looks correct to me. The 아s and 이s are in their rightful spots, or did you correct the phrase already?

avatar says:

Look closer R you will see it….but seriously it’s not important. I was just pointing it out because I read out loud.

avatar steved says:

존,
맞습니다.
Example 1A does say “저는 학생입니디.” No big deal really. Good catch. Maybe the typo is there just to keep us on our toes.

avatar Jesse says:

I Love this Podcast!!! Does anyone know of another website to expand my korean? Thanks in advance!

avatar says:

Jesse check the forums I have posted many….I have alot more if you don’t see anything you like.

avatar Jesse says:

I will take a look at them. Thanks a lot!!

avatar Sindy says:

KC101 crew/listeners!

Today’s lesson was great, I can’t wait for the next one.

I agree with Devon, it’s so similar to Japanese and Keith and Seoul make a nice combination, keep up this great work!  S_R_C

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

여러분 모두 열심히 공부하고 계시군요!! :D 화이팅!!

avatar maxiewawa says:

존 는 JZ 이에요?

Keith씨극, 안녕하세요!

You sound like me, saying hello to every Korean I can just to hear their reaction!

그럼, 여러분 = everybody?

avatar maxiewawa says:

If you haven’t got enough Korean at koreanclass.com, head over to survivalphrases.com, where Keith also teaches Korean. A lesson on Hotels today!
survivalphrases 애 가주새요.
Please go there.

(I’m just guessing that’s how it’s spelt…. I’ve been having some problems with my spelling!)

avatar Keith says:

존씨~ Whoa! nice catch on that error! That thing is TINY!

avatar Victoria says:

I can’t wait until school starts so I can have my lessons there and be able to see the Korean font! Thanks for another practical lesson. Now maybe I can talk with that Korean chef at the hibachi a little…

avatar Jesse says:

This is to the person that wrote me. Dude, what is your screen name on the forums. Just a hint I don’t even know what your name is man! haha

*Keith, thanks a lot for the fun podcast. A special thanks to the crew as well =)

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Maxiewawa, everybody has trouble with spelling at first, so don’t worry about it :D k

Here’s the better version of it, by the way :D I hope it helps!

survivalphrases 애 가주새요.
—> survivalphrases에 가 주세요.

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Jesse, he’s John. “존” is the way we write “John” in Korean. :D

avatar Jesse says:

Thanks!! My name is Jesse btw! haha Oh, your name is ? First or the last? Please to meet you!

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

:-) Pleased to meet you too, Jesse.

My name is Hyunwoo (romanization sound : hyeonu). Where are you from?

avatar jesse says:

From California! Anyone here from the STATES?

avatar Jimmy B says:

Allright - you got me. I trust that you’ll kick butt so I took the Launch Special for a 12 month Premium. All hail the Pitachi Empire.

PS - I haven’t been too active on JPOD in the past couple of months, but will be getting back on that horse as well: I had to make a conscious decision to focus on my “other languages” for a little while (I had some interactions with Russian and Swedes - needed to dust up on that).

Just today at lunch, I sat next to a table of Korean speakers, here in Minnesota. So I’m looking forward to seeing how this site develops, and if I can add this language to my portfolio!

avatar says:

Sorry about that Jesse, I forget my name is different here. Well not different but, eh you understand.

I guess a better name…well better Korean name would be 존이? Or would that be female? I still have a hard time with matching names to a gender.

avatar Sindy says:

Jesse!

Over here from USA NYC!

Anyone else from NYC :???:  S_R_C

Jimmy B

You have my brother’s name too so you are very welcome and I look foward to your posts!  S_R_C

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

John, I think 존 is still a very good name in Korean too. Because 좋은 (joeun) means “good” or “nice” :D

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Anyone living in Korea? ^_^

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Everyone :D John has started a KC101 photo thread in the forum, http://www.koreanclass101.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=73

Check it out, and post your photos up there too!

:D

avatar maxiewawa says:

avatar Peter says:

현우씨

Wow! Nice video! “현우씨는 짱이야!”
Was I even close with the Korean? Great job!

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Peter :-) your Korean is actually very good and getting better!!

Thanks. I’ll make a few in Japanese too. LOL
I don’t know why I didn’t start making videos earlier. I’m shy in front of the camera, but I guess I’ll get used to it. It’s fun! :D

avatar Jesse says:

Hi Sindy! Please to meet you!

I found this website on how to speak the vowels & consonants. Would you guys & gals give me your feedback if it accurate? Be sure to click on Appearance and Sound of Hangul.

Website #1
www.zkorean.com

Website#2
www.langintro.com

Be sure to click the Korean Link on the Hm Page.

Oh yeah before I forget does anyone know of a website where I can learn how to say the alphabet? I guess I’m talking about the syllables formed?

p.s I’ll be adding a photo on Jon’s forum as well

avatar Hyunwoo Sun(선현우) says:

Jesse,

The information in the websites are correct, so you can rely on them. :D And as for the names of the alphabets, I’ll write a posting in the forum about it, and soon we’ll be releasing videos of how to read and write hangul to help you understand the system of hangul :D

avatar Jesse says:

Thanks man! Just let me know when your going to post them. =)

avatar Jesse says:

Thanks Hyunwoo!!
