So, if neither person was staying (For example, work is over, and both people are going home), then would they both say 안녕히 가세요?

I just thought of a way to remember which goodbye to use for English speakers learning Korean. Just remember that “gye” in “gyeseyo” rhymes with “stay” in English. So, “gye” and “stay” and the other one will just be the “go” version. I hope this helps!

If we use 건강하세요 when we won’t see the person for a long time, which word will we use for ‘take care’ when we will see the person next day?

Hello, how do we say goodbye over the phone, since there is no one staying or leaving?

Thanks,
Leng

avatar
timandyou says:

Hello Leng,
Thanks for listening,
“Goodbye” on the phone??
It varies depending on who you are phoning to…

the most common one would be #1 - “안녕”
#2 - “끊어”
#3 - “그럼 쉬어”
#4 - “또 전화할께”
….

This kinds of question has NO right answer!
It all depends on “situation, social status, who calls whom, and many more…”
Thanks for listening,
cheers,
Tim

Little by little…it helps that I have already been learning some of these basic greetings but it is so helpful to have them pronounced to properly so that I will have even less chance of offending by using the wrong pronunciation. Gamsahamnida!

NA KIB says:

annyeong-haseyo jaehwi-nim,

“건강하세요”-eun museun uimiyeyo(what is the meaning for “건강하세요”) ?

avatar
KoreanClass101.com says:

 Hi, Na Kib 님.

건강 means ‘health’. Literally, 건강하세요 means ‘do (have) healthy’. People use the phrase to mean ‘I wish you a good health’ or ‘I wish you good luck on your health’ You can use this phrase just to mean ‘good bye’ so you can use it to anyone : )

It is the idiomatic expression, so it is not correct by Korean grammar, though.

I hope this helps.

Then 오늘도 건강하세요!

Hi, I was with my Korean friend, and a baby came over. She kept on saying ‘Gakkung’ or something. What does it mean?
Thanks!

avatar
Koreanclass101.com says:

Hello Taryn,

까꿍 or kkakkung is like ‘Peekaboo’ in English. For now, it seems like no one knows about the origin meaning, but people use the word to play with babies by getting their attention and trying to make them laugh.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Yeon Young Nam says:

How do you spell “please take care” in korean?? very difficult to spell.

avatar
Koreanclass101.com says:

Hi Yeon Young,

This is Madison from Koreanclass101.com.

Thank you for your question!

Well there are two ways perhaps you could say ‘Please take care.’

Even in English, you could say for literally meaning ‘take care of yourself’ or for saying good bye in more polite way.

So, for the first case you could say,

‘몸 조심하세요’ which means take care of yourself as in health or so.

For the second case,

‘안녕히 계세요’ which means good bye and take care until we see each other next time or so.

Hope this helped!

Thank you,
Madison, Koreanclass101.com
