Try to learn the writing/reading of Koren as well. Want to clarify the sound of the following word “boep-ges-seum-nida” vs. in the Vocabulary section found as “boep-get-seub-nida”. Not sure the third part “습” has a “M” endling sound or “B” sound?
This is the first lesson I had, it’s very helpful.
Thanks.

Emerald, I would try looking up the actual Emerald stone’s name, and that would be your name in Hangul.
However, I did see this in Yahoo Answers:
Well, this is the best way to write it in Korean.
Emerald : 에므랄드 (e-me-ral-deu)
* Pronunciation : 에 (eh) 므 (muh) 랄 (rahl) 드 (duh).

베로니카.
In Korea, the name order is “Family name” + “Given name”
Thank you for visiting KC101.com.
I am Tim.
My new lesson will start in July 2010 for the Absolute Beginner.
You would love the lesson. Very easy, simple, interesting, fun! I bet you all~~!!
The second lesson will be about “How to introduce yourself in Korea”
You gotta listen it! If you wouldn’t like the lesson, you can call me any name you want.
cheers all,
Thursday at 1:50 pm
Great job, KC team!
(1) In the lesson transcript, I see “Hyunwoo” being introduced as “seonhyeonu” and “Gyeong-eun” as “choegyeongeun”. Please explain what “seon” and “choe” stand for.
(2) Also, how come when “haseyo” is pronounced slowly, the “o” ending is pronounced as “o”, but when pronounced fast or in a conversation, as “awe”?
(3) How is Keith’s partner’s name spelled?
Gomapseumnida!
Friday at 9:36 am
Hello, Anikin~~
about your questions…
1. I can’t asnwer them since they are not my name. all I know is “seon” is one of the given name and “choe” is family name.
2. Yes, when you speak fast, the sound is a bit changed as well.
I don’t know where you are from but, … how about your language? Does it sound the same when you speak slowly and fast? I know English is not. I do think it is all the same for any language.
3. Keith has 3 partners - hyunwoo (guy), misun (girl) and seolhwa (girl). That’s all I know of.
All the answers given you is just my idea and my thought.
But I did my best to give you good answers.
cheers,
Friday at 10:11 am
Hello, timandyou,
Many thanks for making time to answer my questions. Despite having listened to Keith and Seol introducing themselves on another lesson (and Seol did talk a little bit about her family name - which btw, I thought didn’t sound like “Hwa”), I completely overlooked the possibility of “Seon” and “Cheo” being family names! (thank you for pointing that out
)
I’m from Malaysia and my native tongue is Malay; English is only my second language. In Malay, we shorten words a lot when we speak fast, e.g., “tidak” (which means “no”) becomes “tak”, which is another word rather than another pronunciation. So, it does confuse me a little when Seol pronounces the “o” ending differently when she speaks slowly and when she speaks fast.
Cheers
Friday at 11:41 am
I found out how Seol’s family name in “Nationalities” > it’s “Yun”, not “Hwa”.
Also, let me tell you again my nationality, in Korean: jeo-neun malaysia saram-imnida
Annyeong!
Friday at 11:43 am
Sorry, typo, I found out what Seol’s family name is, in “Nationalities”.

what would be my name in Korean? My name is Lexie Handley. Also how would you say my sister’s name in Korean? Her name is Rose.
)) kamsahabnida!!!
Thursday at 9:32 am
I was wondering… if my name is very obviously western (Sara Christensen) should I say it with my last name first? I worry people might assume I would say my given name first since I’m an obvious westerner and start calling me Chris or something. haha
Also, I can figure out pretty easily how to say my given name… my last name on the other hand… lol Any tips for Christensen?
Thursday at 11:43 am
“Hello Lexie and Sara~”
First Lexie, about your name and your sis’s name…
Lexie : L (ㄹ) + e (ㅔ) + x (ㄱ) + x (ㅅ) + ie (ㅣ) = ㄹ ㅔ ㄱ, ㅅ ㅣ = 렉시
Handley: H (ㅎ) + a (ㅐ) + n (ㄴ) + d (ㄷ) + l (ㄹ) + ey (ㅣ)
= ㅎ ㅐ ㄴ, ㄷ ㅡ ㄹ, ㄹ ㅣ = 핸들리
Lexie Handley = 렉시 핸들리.
Your sis, Rose: R (ㄹ) + o (ㅗ) + s (ㅈ) + e (ㅡ) = ㄹ ㅗ, ㅈ ㅡ = 로즈
Hello Sara,
In Korea, the order is Last Name + First Name + (Middle). But, please simply say your name (first name) only. If someone asks you family name then, say your name like - Family Name + First Name + (middle)
About your name,
Sara: S (ㅅ) + a (ㅏ) + r (ㄹ) + a (ㅏ) = ㅅ ㅏ, ㄹ ㅏ = 사라
Christensen: Ch (ㅋ) + r (ㄹ) + i (ㅣ) + s (ㅅ) + t (ㅌ) + e (ㅔ) + n (ㄴ) + s (ㅅ) + e (ㅡ) + n (ㄴ) = ㅋ ㅡ, ㄹ ㅣ, ㅅ (ㅡ), ㅌ ㅔ ㄴ, ㅅ ㅡ ㄴ = 크리스텐슨
Sara Christensen: 사라 크리스텐슨.
Thanks for listening,
cheers Lexie Handley = 렉시 핸들리 & Sara Christensen: 사라 크리스텐슨,
Tim

안녕하세요!
저는 앤드루입니다. 처음 뵙겠습니다.
If I used my Korean-ized Chinese name: 승은
Will that name be understood?
Do Koreans usually understand the meanings of other people’s names?
Or is the meaning of another’s name not necessary?

콜린

Tuesday at 6:07 pm
my name paquito how can i write this on korean??
thank you.kamsa hamnida
Wednesday at 10:18 am
Hello everyone~~
This is Tim from KC101.com.
First to Andrew Chang,
Your question was,
“Do Koreans usually understand the meanings of other people’s names?
Or is the meaning of another’s name not necessary? ”
Yes, some names are easy to interpret the meanings but some are not.
You don’t need to know the meaning of name, unless you have very good personal relationship/friendship/fellowship with the one (extremely good).
Second to 콜린,
Yes, it is correct!
Third to paquito,
파 (pa) + 퀴 (qui) + 토 (to) = 파퀴토 paquito.
cheers,
Tim

Hello Aisya,

Hello Aisya,
Thanks for your comment!
okay, about your sis name….
“Azie” = 아(a) + 지(ji) = 아지 (a-ji).
Korean people do not pronounce the sound of [z].
That’s why we pronounce [j] instead of [z].
감사합니다 [gam-sa-hap-ni-da] = “thank you”
“Happy New Year, 아시야”
새해 복 많이 받으세요 [se-hae bok ma-ni bat-eu-se-yo] “happy new year”

Monday at 10:48 am
Hello Jennifer,
“Thanks for the comment!”
Ah~~ about your name, Jennifer Ung..
제[je] + 니[ni] + 퍼[peo] = 제니퍼 [je-nipeo]
and your family name, “Ung” = 웅[ung]
Therefore, 제니퍼 웅 [Je-nipeo ung] “Jennifer Ung”
I am not 100% sure with the pronunciation of your family name though…
cheers,
Tim
Wednesday at 5:55 am
Annyeonghaseyo! Hi, I was wondering how to say and write my name in Korean…it is Felicia!
Wednesday at 8:12 am
How do you write my name in hangul? my name is Candice
But another question i have is can foreigners adopt a korean name? like if we move there permanently ? if so…how does adopting a korean name happen? do you pick one or does the government?!
Wednesday at 10:26 am
Hello Felicia,
This is Tim from KC101.com.
About your name - Felicia…
펠(Fel) + 리(li) + 시(si) + 아(a)
= 펠리시아 (fel-li-si-a) “Felicia”
Hope this helps,
cheers,
Tim
Wednesday at 10:36 am
Hello Candice,
This is Tim from KC101.com.
About your name - Candice…
I need to make sure of “i” between ‘d’ and ‘c’. Does it sound as “i” or “ai”?
I’ll give you both in case that my guess is wrong.
a. as “i” - 캔(caen) + 디(di) + 스(seu) = 캔디스 (caen-di-seu)
b. as “ai” - 캔(caen) + 다이(dai) + 스(seu) = 캔다이스 (caen-dai-seu)
“Candice”
Since I am NOT an expert on this kinds of matters, I can tell you for sure but,
I have to, “yes, you wouldn’t have much problem to get one Korean name”
These days, it’s very common to change names even for Korean. If you are allowed by the government of Korea to stay permanently, getting one Korean name wouldn’t be a big deal.
But still it’s my assumption (maybe not…I don’t know for sure).
I hope this helps,
cheers,
Tim
Friday at 8:31 am
Thank-you Tim!
Friday at 10:20 am
You’re welcome, 펠리시아~~^^

Tim

Thought I should let you guys know… and I was a little disappointed. Perhaps it is just something strange with my computer?

안녕하세요!
Im really exited to learn Korean so I wanted to ask if you could show me how to write my name in korean, which is Annerys De Jesus and I am from Puerto Rico (hispanic). I was also wondering if it would be better to go by my nickname, Poppy (포피), or a korean given name. Please let me know what you think.
Friday at 10:03 am
For sure, I can help you show your name in Korean : )
[Your name in Korean]
안네리스 데 예수스
Annerys De Jesus
I wrote it in Spanish way.
I think Koreans will also like your nickname ‘포피’. butI think they will like it much better if you write in down like this ‘뽀삐’
‘ㅃ’is similar to ‘P’ sound but it has more tense, so Koreans think it sounds more cute. : )
Friday at 3:30 pm
Annyeonghaseyo. jeo-neun Ana-imnida. Cheoeum boepgessseumnida.
I’m having so much fun listening to the audio and learning at the same time! I think that it helps so much when you say the phrase normally then slow it down so we can learn how to pronounce it properly.
I was wondering how my name, Ana Garcia, would be written in Hangul?
Friday at 5:14 pm
저도 처음 뵙겠습니다. 잘 부탁드립니다. : )
Jeodo cheoeum boepgetseupnida. jal butakdeuripnida.
Thanks for your idea. Your idea will help us improve the upcoming classes. I believe that the slow version of each phrase will be helpful for others too.
Also, you can write your name in Korean like this
Ana Garcia
아나 가르시아
Then, have a nice weekend : )
Saturday at 5:19 am
Thank you so much!
I hope you have an amazing weekend.
Friday at 1:49 pm
Hello! How would you say my name in Korean? I’m American and my name is Monique Willis. Thanks!
Friday at 2:52 pm

Shouldn’t Willis be 윌리스? It’s the same name as Bruce Willis right?

Hi Monique. I believe Willis should be 윌리스 as this is how they spell Bruce Willis his name in Korean, and it just sounds more like it
윌즈 sounds like Wills.

annyeong-haseyo jeahwi-nim,
“cheoum boepgessumnida!”-eun museun uimiyeyo ?….
p/s: is my sentence correct ?
Wednesday at 9:32 pm
annyeong-haseyo, songseng nim,
I found this sentence….”Jeodo cheoeum boepgetseupnida. jal butakdeuripnida.” …what is “jeodo” & also the sentence ” jal butakdeuripnida ” ?
Chom to-wa-ju-shil ssu i-ssŭ-shi-na-yo? (can you help me ?)
Thursday at 9:34 am
저도(Jeodo) means ‘I also’. 저 menas ‘I’ or ‘Me’ in polite way. And, 도 means ‘also’ or ‘too’.
If someone says 저도, it means ‘I do something, too’
And.. the sentence 잘 부탁드립니다. literally means ‘Please take care of me well.’ People use this phrase after introducing themselves. You can also say ‘잘 부탁해’. informally.
To say ‘Can you help me?’ you can write it as ‘절 도와주실 수 있으세요?’ (jeol dowa jusilsu itseuseyo?) : )
I hope this helps.
Thank you, and 저도 잘 부탁드립니다.

But pronunciation can be different a little bit, after translated in Korean.

안녕하세요!
Myriam, you can set up the Korean keyboard on your laptop depending on what computer you have. Windows Vista and Windows 7 have a feature where you can add additional keyboards for other languages onto your computer and interchange between them. A little icon stays down in the bar at the bottom and you can click it to change between your keyboard and the “KO” - Korean keyboard. Then you can click and an on-screen keyboard will pop up, and you can just click and it will type! Or, if you memorize the Korean keyboard, you can type like you normally would. I have keyboard stickers that have the English letters and then the Korean letters for that key, too. If you have Windows Vista or Windows 7, let me know and I can explain it to you! Or - just Google it. ^^
And I am no Hangeul expert, but I can try~
Is your name pronounced Meer-ee-um? In that case it is 미리음. (mee-ree-eum)
Someone, feel free to correct me if I am wrong! I tried my best. ^^;

다니엘씨, 안녕하세요!:)
This is Madison from Koreanclass101.com.
The good thing is your name is fairly easy for Koreans.
To write down how to pronounce your name in english,
it is Dae-Ni-ell.
However, in Korea it is more like Da-Ni-Ell.
So the sound is the same except for the first word Dae to Da!
Hope it helped you and please feel free to comment us anytime 다니엘.
Thank you,
Madison, Koreanclass101.com
